Dr. Joseph Hayward Bailey

Dr. Joseph Hayward Bailey, Surgeon U.S. Army, founder of the Masonic Lodge in Fort Smith, was a physician as were his father, grandfather and four of his sons. The Bailey family were relatives of John Quincy Adams. His parents were Rowland and Abbie Bailey. After preparing himself for the medical profession, he served as a surgeon in the United States Army. In early 1830 about the time the Cherokee Indians were settled in Indian Territory, he was assigned to duty as surgeon at Fort Gibson, and in 1838 came to Fort Smith as an army surgeon. He was married to Mary Aikman Reed on Nov 4, 1830 and had twelve children.
