Dr. John Alexander Caruthers

Dr. John A. Caruthers was born in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1828 to Mathew and Fanie (Chiles) Caruthers. He was a physician in Greenwood, Arkansas in 1860. In June 1862, he was a member of Company "A" (Gordon's Regiment, of the Arkansas Calvary of the Confederate States of America.

After the war, Dr. Carruthers was found in Waldron(Scott County)Arkansas from 1870 to 1880. He then moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1884 and in 1897 died there.

Dr. John Caruthers studied medicine at the University of Maryland. He was married to Minnie Bell, the daughter of Henry P. and Susan Bell of Greenwood. The coupled had children: Dr. Fred Caruthers and Dr. Elmo Caruthers.
