Dr. Samuel Houston Payne
1828-1927


Dr. Samuel Houston Payne was born on Sep 23, 1828 in Giles County, Tennessee. son of Gabriel Wilson and Mary Hannah Payne and husband of Martha Ann Moffett. Martha was born Tennessee Aug 20, 1835, and was the daughter of Robert Moffet and Sarah. Robert was a merchant and farmer in Scott County, Arkansas.

In 1860 Samuel and Martha lived in Center Township, Sebastian Co., Arkansas. Samuel and Martha had 9 children Victoria, Isadora, Mary Llewellen, Gabriel Lucas, Houston Jackson, Tommie, Gunter Moffett, Martha Ross, and Oklahoma Eudora. In 1860 A.I. and Edora Moffatt were living with them. Martha Ann was the daughte of Robert and Sarah T. Gunter Moffett.

Doctor Sam was appointed post master of Greenwood May 3, 1867. In 1900 Martha Ann is living in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. She is listed on the census that her race was Indian (Native American). Daughter Idora is with her. In 1910 she is back in Sebastian County, Fort Smith living with daughter Oklahoma and her family.

Dr. S. H. Payne died June 25, 1877 in Moffett, Indian Territory and Martha Ann died January 4, 1924 in Sebastian County Arkansas. They are buried in Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Ar.
