Dear Ms. Huntley,

I believe I am a direct descendant of Lewis Coleman, child of Henry Coleman, from Van Buren, AR.  As far as I have been able to find out, Lewis settled in the St. Louis area of Missouri after the Civil War while the rest of his kin remained in the Van Buren/Ft. Smith area.

Do you have any details that you would be willing to share about his brothers and sisters and their descendants?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to reply.

Best regards, Mark Coleman

Notes for JOHN FREDERICK COLEMAN:

Note: Operated a cotton gin at the crossing of Big Creek narrows in the early 1900's. In 1908, the Colemans moved to a farm in the Auburn community, and a few years later, they sold the farm and bought a house, a store and gin at Auburn. They operated this business for about twenty years. John put in the telephone system with some switch connections on the wall of their house. Later on, he bought a switchboard and they could talk only in the community, but also to Greenwood and Charleston. This little telephone system began about 1910. When John was a young man, he worked on the mule-drawn street cars in Ft. Smith. The Coleman family, when the children were still small came on Sunday and visited with the Cormack family. I guess it was more to show their new surrey-a light four wheeled carriage with two separate seats and a top cover with a border of tassels around the edge. You did not see many of these. It was a beauty, and drawn by two horses with fancy harness-black with red trims. Really, it was a fancy carriage. As told by Lena Cormack, The Key Magazine, Summer 1977.

Yes, My mother is Doris and she is still living in Price, Ut.      When she met Chuck, he told her his name was Charles Pflugher, after they were married he told her his real name was Chesley Pitman. He had never legaly had it changed to Pflugher. So to make the marrage legal, he went to a lawer in Price,UT. Payed him three or four hundred dollars and had it legaly changed. Do you know what happened to Chuck? is he still alive? we don't want to contact him, we were just wondering what ever became of him.

I was 16 or 17 years old, my father was dead and my mother had my younger brother and myself at home. She met Chuck in a resterant in S.L.C., he followed her to Price and stayed at a motel, they dated and soon were married. Chuck recieved a small check from the military around $300 a month and my mother was drawing social security. It really was't enough, so Chuck set out to find a job. He saw an ad in the paper for a truckdriver; he told them he used to own his own 18 wheeler and had driven for a number of years But when he did'nt know how to release the airbrake on the truck, he did'nt get the job. He worked in a potash mine in Moab Ut. for a while, he also worked in some coal mines in Paiona and Redstone Colorado. He sold Mason Shoes and metal S.S. cards. The poor guy tryed everything but he just could'nt hold down a job. The fact that he could'nt keep a job on top of all the lies he told, was more than my mother could take and they were divorced. He left Price, driving a green 1967 (I Think) Chevy Pickup, with a six cylender engine. I've never seen or heard from him since. Hope this fills in a little space for you. If you have anymore questions, I'll be glad to help, if I can. Gotta go to work now, be home around 2:00 AM.
