Arthur Lee Anthony
1921-1945

Arthur Lee Anthony was born in 1921 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. to Phillip Herbert & Hettie Ola Yutoca "Toka" Stem Anthony. Both parents passed away in 1929 leaving Arthur and his sister Margareta Oleta to be raised by an aunt and uncle.

On the 1940 San Diego, California census. taken April 6, 1940, Arthur is living in the Naval Barricks at the US Naval Training Station and is listed as an APP Seaman. He says he had finished elementry school.

On a Navy muster role dated June 7, 1940 from the USS West Virginia, traveling from San Pedro, Ca. to Lahaina, Maui, T.H., Arthur is listed as a A.S. and his enlistment date was March 12, 1940 in San Diego, California. (History of the USS West Virginia says.... in April 1940, by which time tensions with Japan over the latter's initiation of the Second Sino-Japanese War had led the United States to transfer the fleet from California to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as a deterrent to further aggression by Japan.)

A muster roll dated June 15, 1940 Arthur was reported on board the USS Argonne and his rank is listed as Sea 2c. On 25 July 1940, USS Argonne classification was changed from submarine tender to "auxiliary, miscellaneous", and she was given the hull number AG-31. Eventually, with the movement of the Fleet to Hawaiian waters over the winter of 1939 and spring of 1940, commencing with the establishment of the Hawaiian Detachment in October 1939 and the permanent retention of the fleet in Hawaiian waters upon the conclusion of Fleet Problem XXI in April 1940, the needs for auxiliaries such as Argonne resulted in a change of scene for that ship. In August 1941, she was shifted from San Pedro to Pearl Harbor.

September 30 1940 was the sailing date of the USS Antares which Arthur is listed as aboard. (Antares operated principally out of San Pedro, California, but later expanded her area of operations to the Hawaiian Islands and changed her base to Pearl Harbor. On 30 November 1940, the ship was reclassified to a general stores issue ship, AKS-3. During 1941, Antares operated between Pearl Harbor and the U.S. West Coast (San Pedro, Mare Island Navy Yard, and San Francisco, California), and Pacific islands such as Palmyra and Canton.)

USS Hopkins was the ship Arthur was aboard month ending March 31, 1941. His rank was Sea 2nd class. I find no information in 1941 about the USS Hopkins until December 7, 1941. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hopkins was at Johnston Island for war maneuvers, but immediately headed back to Hawaii. She continued patrol of the Hawaiian Sea Frontier, with a short break for overhaul in the States, until late summer 1942.)

On another muster also dated the month ending March 31, 1941 for the USS Argonne it says Arthur was transferred from the USS Hopkins.

USS Pecos was the ship that Arthur was aboard Sept 1, 1941 (When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Pecos was in the Philippines supporting the ships of the Asiatic Fleet. She departed Cavite Navy Yard 8 December 1941 for Borneo and reached Balikpapan on the 14th. After filling up with oil and gasoline, the tanker pushed on to Makassar in Celebes, Netherlands East Indies where she refueled American warships fighting to slow the explosive advance of Japanese forces in the southwest Pacific.)

No more musters aboard any ship are found after the above.
