James Everett Atterberry
1920-1944






James "Jim" Everett Atterberry was born June 28, 1920. He was the third of three brothers born to John Edward "Ed" and Jessie Lewis Atterberry, who were living in Johnson County, Ar. on the 1920 census taken in January of that year. 1930 the family was living in Oklahoma and by 1942 they were in Sebastian Co. Ar.

Petty Officer First Class, Gunner's Mate James Everett Atterberry was killed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. He served in the Coast Guard and was aboard a landing craft headed toward the Dog White section of Omaha beach when they hit a mine. They continued to disembark troops, even though they were being pummeled by German 88 artillery fire.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and is buried at the National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ar.
