Oris Dale Barkley
1917 - 2016




Oris Dale Barkley was born June 30, 1917 at Midland, Sebastian Co, to Thomas Arthur and Dora Hammons Barkley. October 22, 1945 Oris married Virginia Whitney at Bernalillo, New Mexico.

January 7, 1946 Oris registered for the military draft at Huntington Park, California. He enlisted in the US Navy. He served as a Radioman on three different ships although almost all of his service was aboard the USS Coucal (ASR-8).

The USS Coucal (ASR-8) was a Chanticleer -class submarine rescue ship in the US Navy. USS Coucal (ASR-8) arrived at Brisbane, Australia, 23 June 1943 to serve the submarines of the 7th Fleet. After 4 October, she gave escort, fueling, and tender services from Milne Bay, New Guinea, and in March 1944, carried cargo to Manus and the bombarded Koruniat Island while sailing south to Brisbane for repairs. Between 29 October 1944 and 29 December, USS Coucal (ASR-8) joined in convoy exercises with submarines out of Fre-mantle, returning to duty at Darwin. Between 10 February 1945 and 3 June, USS Coucal (ASR-8) continued her tender service at Exmouth Gulf, then loaded cargo and passengers at Fremantle for the submarine base at Subic Bay, where she arrived 4 July.

Some of the muster sheets for those ships are at the bottom of this information. He was on the wounded in action list but no date was given. He and his wife Viginia remained in California after the war was over.

Oris passed away July 14, 2016 in North Hills, Los Angeles, California. He is buried at The Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California beside his wife.
