Pfc Clarence R Barnard

Pfc. Barnard was born 9 Feb 1920 in Van Buren, Ar., to Poke Haskell and Deller Sparks Barnard. July 13, 1940 he married Flossie Pearl Altus in Sebastian Co., Ar.

PFC Barnard's tour began on June 8, 1944 serving with the 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Division. He died 16 Apr 1945. He is buried in Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith Ar., no marker found. He was a recepient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

In September 1944, the 88th Infantry Division used the 349th Infantry Regiment as a rapid column to spearhead the drive north to Bologna. The 349 out the town of Belvedere after a fierce firefight, and by 2 October, controlled a ridgeline that overlooked the German positions. In the Po Valley Campaign, the 349th captured Monterumici after a tough battle that lasted from 15–21 April 1945, and moved on to cross the Po River on 24 April.
