Robert Eugene Boyer was born December 18, 1927 at Galesburg, Illinois to Thomas F. & Leona Anibia Boyer. By 1930 the family was living in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. September 4, 1949 Robert married Nancy Lee Groves. They were divorced March 5, 1958. His second marriage was to Hilda Jo Bwerman in Fort Smith, Ar. where both were residents.

Robert enlisted in the US Navy March 1, 1946 and served until November 1 1946. His rank was "Sn"- Junior Enlisted Navy.

He then enlisted in the US Army December 1, 1950 and served until November 20, 1952. The times between these dates were also probably time he served in the US Army. So many records have been lost it's hard to say. His rank in the Army was Col. His headstone at the Fort Smith National Cemetery where he rests says he served in WWII, Korean War and in Vietnam.

Robert Eugene Boyer passed away October 28, 2008 at Little Rock, Arkansas. His burial was in the National Cemetery at Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar.

Col. Robert E. Boyer, 80, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock surrounded by his loved ones. He retired from the Army in 1973 and then served as deputy prosecuting attorney, county judge and circuit-chancery judge for Sebastian County.

During his military service he was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal on two occasions, the Bronze Star Medal, the General Staff Badge, Army Commendation and Medal on two occasions, National Defense Service Medal on two occasions, World War II Victory Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with four campaign credits, the Meritorious Unit Medal and the Parachutist Badge. During World War II, he was in training as a Navy pilot under the Navy V-5 program. During the Korean War, he volunteered for Army active duty and was assigned to Headquarters 11th Airborne Division. During the 1957 integration crisis of Little Rock Central High, Bob served as judge advocate's legal adviser to the General Commanding Army troops there. Prior to his Army service, he served as an FBI special agent and on the staff of Congressman James Trimble. He was a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Arkansas Retired Military Association and a charter member of the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was active in many community, civic and charitable organizations and was a past president of the Fort Smith Exchange Club. In 2003, he was a recipient of the City's Spirit of the Frontier Award.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jo Boyer of the home; two daughters, Joan Boyer of Colorado Springs, Susie and husband, Brian Rosenthal of Little Rock; two grandchildren, Molly and Grant Rosenthal of Little Rock; one sister, Jackie Carey of Plano, Texas; and one brother, Tommy Boyer of Amarillo, Texas.

Funeral service will be Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at the U.S. National Cemetery including full military honors, all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Col. Herb Couvillion, Bill Etzkorn, Bill Kirk, Judge Bud Harper, Judge David Saxon, Jack Buell, Ray Evans, David Harris, Gary Marcott, Tom Canava, Lewis Young, the Fort Chaffee Military Retiree Council and members of the Board of Directors of the Fort Smith Exchange Club.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.
