S/Sgt Jack W. Dempsey was born Dec 17, 1921 at Fort Smith, Ar. to Aubrey Dempsey & Myrtle Dempsey Dempsey (same last name no relation)

Ssgt Jack Dempsey, enlisted in the US ARMY AIR CORPS 13 May 1943 and was stationed at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, Texas.

On 13 May 1943 while training at Biggs Army Airfield, the plane that he was in crashed, ending his life. He was buried in Fort Smith National Cemetery, Fort Smith, Ar.

LOCAL AIRMAN KILLED IN CRASH NEAR EL PASO

Staff Sergeant Dempsey, 21 years old, widely known Fort Smith youth, was killed Thursday in an airplane crash near El Paso, Texas.

Sergeant Dempsey was the son of Mrs. Myrtle Butler, 3609 North Fifieth Street, who received a telegram notifying her of the death of her son. He was graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1940.

Sergeant Dempspey is survived by his mother, his stepfather, Floyd Butler, a (half) brother, Mack and a (half) sister Rosalie. His (maternal) grandfather is W.T. Dempsey, Fort Smith.

The funeral will be held in Fort Smith with the Fentress Funeral Home in charge of arrangements which have not yet been completed. (End of article)

Jack's parents, were married in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Ar. on June 9, 1921. His father Aubrey left the state on April 5, 1922 to find work. Even though Aubrey sent correspondence of his intent to come home, he was never heard from again. The last letter was from Minot, North Dakota in Oct of 1922 and he said he was coming home, but he never made it. No one ever knew what happened to him. Myrtle sought a divorce and it was granted in Sebastian Chancery Court, Fort Smith District and she married Floyd Butler.
