note from Karen Stallings Winters - Sonnie's real name is Cleotis Latilus Edwards. He hated his name and said he was changing it to Sonnie C........which he did and went by it the rest of his life.



Sonnie Clay Edwards was born October 5, 1921 in Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar. to Willie Ray & Flora Olivia Stallings Edwards. April 8, 1942 Sonnie married Ruby Mae Thomas of Lavaca, Sebastian Co., Ar. They married at Greenwood, Sebastian co., Ar. They divorced June 9, 1944 Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar. His second wife was Jeanne Van Meter from Charleston, Franklin Co., Ar. whom he married June 11, 1946 in Sebastian Coumty, Ar.

September 12, 1945 Sonnie registered for the military draft. His draft card states that he had "just been discharged from service". He had served in the National Guard which had benn called to active duty. His enlistment date in the US Army was January 6, 1941. He served in the Army Field Artillery Branch. While serving he was wounded in the line of duty in March 1944. His hospital report states that his wound was in the abdominal wall and the cause had been an artillery shell, fragments and debris. His treatment was suture. In April 1944 he was discharged back to active duty. His final discharge from the Army was September 9, 1945.

Sonnie Clay Edwards passed away December 28, 2003 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. His burial was at Charleston, Franklin Co., Ar. at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
