James Lee Ervin was born August 17, 1921 in Winnsboro, Louisiana to William Bezze & Marjorie L "Margie" Linscott Ervin. Before 1930 the family moved to Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Ar. Father William B. died May 5, 1944 just a few weeks before James was killed in the war.

James enlisted in the Army Air Corp Feb 3, 1942 and was assigned to 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy. In June 1944 S/Sgt James Ervin was killed in action. His death is recorded as June 4, 1944. The 64th Bomb Squadron of the 43rd Bomb Group were fighting in Nadzab, New Guinea from 11 Mar 1944 - 10 Jul 1944.

James was listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea with his memorial at Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. S/Sgt Ervin was awarded the Flying Cross, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters & Purple Heart for his service.

The 64th Bomb Squardron 43rd Heavy Bomb Group was stationed at Nadzab, New Guinea, 11 Mar 1944 - 10 Jul 1944.

The 43rd was one of the key units participating in the famous raids on Hollandia in Dutch New Guinea during the spring of 1944, and on the oilfields at Balikpapan, Borneo during the fall of that year.
