Joseph August Fritz was born 7 DEC 1918 in Logan Co., Ar. to Father: Charles Winsel & Magadelena 'Lena' Rose Zimmer Fritz. The family was living in Fort Smith by 1938. Joseph Fritz registered for the draft 13 Nov 1942 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

TSgt Joseph August Fritz was declared dead Oct 14, 1944 after the bomber he was assigned to crashed. Air Force 5th Group 22nd Bomb (h), Squadron 408th Bomb. They departed from Owi Island. The destination was Balikpapen, Borned for a Strike Oct 14, 1944. They were over the target. Aircraft was lost as a result of Enemy Aircraft. There were 10 people aboard.

March 27, 1945 Statement: While taking evasive action against phosphorus bombs, the formation turned right into several bursts of flak. One of these hit Lt. McKeeney's plane forward of the cockpit. He turned to the left towards the water passing under our ship. Flames were visible through the windows in the bombardiers compartment. Both Lt. McKeeney and Lt. Guagliardo were seen handling the controls. The plane was losing altitude and an enemy fighter were making an attack from approximately 7:30 level. That was the last I saw as we were on the bombing run by then.
