Alfred enlisted in the US Air Corps September 16, 1942 at Little Rock, Arkansas; He states he completed 3 years of high school and his civil occupation was carpenter. While in the service he was injured non battle.

Alfred Harold "Nick" Nixon, 88, of Greenwood died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith.

He was born to Elzie B. and Ida Gross Nixon on January 17, 1923 at Clark's Chapel.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenwood. He retired in 1981, after 40 years of U.S. Civil Service at Fort Chaffee. Alfred was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before being wounded and returning home.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Sylvia Laster Nixon, a brother, Elmer Nixon; and two sisters, Ruby Hearn and Edris Dell.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 5 at Greenwood First Baptist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of the home; two daughters, Cheryl Dedmon and husband Randy of Lowell and Marcia Witcher and husband Gary of Fort Smith; five grandsons, Mark Dedmon and wife Lee Ann of Lowell, Michael Dedmon and wife Whitney of Rogers, Garett Witcher and wife Lacey of Fort Smith, Craig Witcher of Fort Smith and Philip Witcher of Greenwood; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Dedmon, Addison Dedmon and Cohen Witcher; one brother, Lester Nixon of Witcherville and two sisters, Bernice Golyar of Battle Creek, Mich., and Margie McCartney of Monticello.

He is also survived by two stepsons, Bob McNees and wife Connie of Greenwood and Bill McNees and wife Donna of Huntington, two step-grandsons, Bobby McNees and wife Kelli of Springdale and Christopher McNees of Greenwood; three step-granddaughters, Casey Jones and husband Heath and Meagan Jones and husband Brandon, all of Greenwood, and Kathy Knox and husband Derek of Barling; and five step-greatgrandchildren, Jessalyn Jones, Conner Jones, Gavin McNees, Carson Jones and Harper McNees.
