1921-2011


Johnnie Michael Porter was born October 7, 1921 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co. Ar. to Joseph Foster, Sr.& Grace Vogel Porter. September 15, 1942 he married Vena Johnson at Fort Smith, Ar. where they both resided.

Johnnie registered for the military draft February 16, 1942 at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He enlisted in the US Army in Little Rock, Ar. on September 14, 1942. The date of the end of his time in the military although it was after 1952 as he was listed in a Select Military Register dated September 10, 1952. He was serving in the Army National Guard and his rank was 1 Lt at that time. A copy of that record is below.

Johnnie M. Porter passed away February 17, 2011 in Sebastian Co., Ar. His burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Mr. Johnnie M. Porter, died Feb. 17, 2011, in a local Fort Smith hospital. Mr. Porter was 89 years, 4 months, and 10 days old. He was the son of the late Foster and Grace Porter.

Mr. Porter was a lifelong member of Christ The King Catholic Church; a World War II and the Korean Conflict veteran; and a retired employee of Weldon, Williams, and Licks Printing Company, where he worked faithfully for over 42 years. Mr. Porter was a member of the Palamino Horseman Hall of Fame and the past President of the Palamino Association. He was married to Vena (Johnson)Porter. Mr. Porter also rode for the Sebastian County Mounted Patrol.

Mr. Porter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Verna Porter; 2 brothers: Foster Porter and Frank "Boots" Porter; and 1 sister: Lillian "Sis" Margret (Porter) Mooney. He is survived by his second wife: Annie (Fox) Porter; 1 child: Landis Moss; 2 grandsons: MIchael Moss and Jeffrey Moss; 3 great-grandchildren: 1 sister: Ruth Tinder; 1 brother: Charles "Buddy" Porter; 2 step-children: Barbara Morphes and Ruby Fox; other relatives; and many, many good friends.

Rosary Mass was held on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Funeral Mass was held on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in the afternoon, at Christ The King Catholic Church.
Mr. Porter was laid to rest at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Pallbearers were: Bob Reather, Jeff Fenwick, John Donberger, Leo Ray, Harley Strang, Jerry Wassler, Robert Marian, and Ken Billingsly. Alternate pallbearers were: J.R. Lewis and Randy Spradley. Honorary pallbearers were the retirees and employess of Weldon, William, and Licks.
