Herbert Cumbie Stewart was born July 21, 1917 at Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar to Grover Cleveland & Bessie May Cumbie Stewart. On his draft card Herbert gives his address as 223 No. 12th St. Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. His parents are living in Greenwood.

Herbert served as a Private First Class in the US Army. He was wounded in action in the Phillipine Islands in January 1945. Pfc. Stewart died of those wounds.

Pfc. Stewart was treated and died Jan. 24, 1945 at an Aid Station, Clearing or Collection Station, Dispensary at Luzon Island, Phillipines.

His body was brought home and burial was in Liberty Cemetery, Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar.

FUNERAL SLATED FOR MAN KILLED ON LUZON


GREENWOOD, ARKANSAS - (Special) -
Funeral service for Private First Class Herbert C. Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Stewart of Abbott, Arkansas, who was killed on Luzon Island of the Phillippines January 24, 1945, will be held Friday at 8 p.m., at the Greenwood Baptist Church. The body of the serviceman was returned to the McConnell Funeral Home at Greenwood Wednesday.

Rev. George Hink, pastor of the church where service is to be held, and Rev. Kail McClendon, pastor of the Mansfield Baptist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery with the Waldron American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars holding a military service at the graveside.

Survivors besides the parents include four brothers, Dallas of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Harris of Paris, Arkansas, Floyd of the Navy, and John of the home; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Carson of Huntington, Arkansas, Mrs. Isabell Bethel of Waldlron, and Miss Norma Stewart of the home.

Mr. Stewart spent his entire life before entering service in the Greenwood district.

Pallbearers will be Harold Moore, Dempsey Ray, Hilton Gant, Joe Carson, Lawrence McConnell, and Arthur Shackleford.
