Specialist Fourth Class Carl Calvin Bates, Jr. was born Aug 13, 1948 in Fort Smith, Ark. to Carl Calvin Bates, Sr. and Norma L. Wood Bates. He attended Northside High School in Fort Smith. He is buried Rose Lawn Park Cemetery in Fort Smith. His tour of duty began Dec 20, 1968 and ended with his death Aug 17, 1969 in Laos, Quang Nam province. He was attached to the 1st Aviation Brigade, 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 57th Aviation Company. His specialty was Aircraft Maintenance Crewman and his death came by hostile action resulting in an air crash on land of his helicopter.
