Alexander Little In April 1861 Alex Little enlisted in Company C, 19 Arkansas Infantry, Confederate Army . While serving as a medic in St. John's College Hospital, Little Rock, he was captured when the city fell to the Union Army in 1863, but escaped and made his way to Washington, Hempstead County. Little became forage master for General Kirby Smith's cavalry and served in southwest Arkansas and Louisiana until the war ended. He was paroled at Marshall, Texas in May 1865 and returned to his home in Sevier County. Alex became a prosperous farmer and stockman, operating a 320-acre farm about a mile and a half north of Lockesburg, Arkansas. He was a Democrat and, beginning in 1872, a Mason. My father remembered him as a jovial, good-natured man who had a winning way with children. Alex Little died August 27, 1911 and was buried with Masonic honors in Old Union Cemetery. Margaret Jane Ferguson
Margaret Ferguson and her brother, William Simpson "Simp" Ferguson, were married to another brother/sister pair, Alexander "Alex" Little and Jane Elizabeth Little, in a double wedding on Sept. 30, 1857. This was probably right before the entire Andrew Ferguson Family moved from Chattooga County, Georgia, to Sevier County, Arkansas. Why did they move? Unsure at this time, but it was a good thing for the family that they did. Only two years later the War Between the States began. By 1865, Georgia was devastated. Had the family remained there, their history would have been quite different. At least four of Andrew and Dorothy's sons fought in the Civil War: Alfred Cobb Ferguson, Seville Ranson Ferguson, and Marion Francis Ferguson all fought and returned to their families. The fifth son, however, Miles N. Ferguson, did not return. He was married to Martha Jane Burkley on September 25, 1861. No record of him is found after the War, so it is assumed he died during this time. Malinda's husband, James M. Henderson, also served in the C.S.A., losing an arm at Chickamauga. Dr. John L.
