PADGETT CHAS. UNK 2 9 1904 UNKNOWN | Death of Tillman Vaughn and Wife=The grim reaper has made quick work in the Vaughn household, and the friends and relatives of the family are appalled at the fatalities which occurred therein in the last ten days. It was just ten days ago that Chas.Padgett, the second husband of their daughter in law, died in the home of Tillman Vaughn, in Franks township, near Haynes. On Wednesday evening, Feb.17,1904, Tillman Vaughn himself passed away, aged 71 years. He had pneumonia and his advanced years made him an easy prey to the disease. The remains were interred in the Mt.Vernon cemetery. Undertaker Stevens had just arrived at the house, and had the remains in his casket, when Mrs.Vaughn, wife of the deceased, and two years his senior, passed away from old age and general debility. PARCHMENT MILES unk 8 23 1908 UNKNOWN | 8-28-1908 A SUNDAY KILLING=Three sharp reports emanating from the hotel on Jackson street, broke the peaceful quiet of last sabbath morning, Aug.23,1908, and a crowd soon gathered around the hotel, when it was learned that Deputy Sheriff L.H.Potts had killed a man. Dr.W.H.Alley was summoned at once, and found a man named Miles Parchment lying on the porch with a bullet wound in his arm, and one through his hip and stomach, from which hed died during the night. The circumstances were as follows: Sheriff Williams and Deputy Potts were on the Shields corner talking when a woman came up and asked Potts for 25 cents, that she claimed that he owed her. It ended up she returned to the hotel mentioned above, and Parchment intervened saying she was his wife, and told him not to take her into custody, while reaching towards his hip, which Potts interpreted as reaching for a weapon, and immediately fired his pistol. All because of drunkeness apparently. Coroner Todd held an inquest and found no charges from the death. |

PARHAM TOM DEPUTY CLERK UNK 5 19 1889 UNKNOWN | Not since awful gloom over the deaths of Sheriff Wilson, Marshall Frank Folbre, and Deputy Clerk Tom Parham, as a result of the awful riot on May 19,1889; the accidental drowning of our dear friend, John V.Webb, on April 22,1892, and the shocking death of Joe Sanders and Robert Rollwage, as a result of a powder explosion which occurred at L.Rollwage & Co.'s store on the 18th of June, 1898, has there ever been such a pall of darkness cast upon the entire community as this awful tragedy as this awful tragedy has done. In addition to the terrible grief of the deceased's relatives, the sweet little family and the devoted mother and sister of Gordon Casteel are almost crazed with grief and sorrow that such an awful, fearful deed should have been committed by their loved one, and that he should be incarcerated in a prison cell. It was later learned that Gordon had not been deputized by Dr.McKnight, sheriff, or Deputy Murphree, Marshall Rainbolt, nor by any one else. to act in the capacity of an officer of the peace. |
PARHAM WILLIE LEE UNK 4 23 1900 CITY | Death of Willie Lee Parham-Again we have to perform the sad duty of recording the death of a beloved citizen. On Apr.23,1900, the spirit of Willie Lee Parham winged its flight heavenward to its Maker. His illness and death bed were such as one rarely witnessed. Nearly two years ago he was stricken with that dread disease, consumption, and went to Texas in the hopes of restoring his health, but gradually grew worse, and was obliged to return, and was confined to his bed for nearly a year before his demise. All that love and medical attention could do was done. Kind friends visited him daily, and the devotion of his wife has no parallel-she was never tiring in her attention and love for her life companion. It was of no avail except to comfort, and the end came at last as a sweet relief to his sufferings. Being a consistent member of the Methodist church Mr.Parham learned early in life how to live, consequently he had no fear to meet grim death, and passed away without a struggle. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday at 3 o'clock, Rev.W.C.Davidson officiating. The edifice was filled with bereaved relatives and sorrowing friends. After the services, the Woodmen of the World took charge of the remains and escorted them to the FORREST CITY, where they were interred under the beautiful ceremony of the order. Willie Lee Parham was born in St.Francis county in 1872, and was barely twenty-eight years of age at his death. He was the youngest son of Capt.John Parham. He was a young man of sterling qualities, a true friend, and generous to a fault. He was married to Miss Lula Mason, daughter of Rev. & Mrs.J.A.Mason Jan.1,1896.-FORREST CITY TIMES 4-27-1900 |

PARROTT JOHN M. JUDGE 10 1814 3 23 1896 CITY | It is with the feeling of great sorrow that the Times chronicles the death of Judge John P.Parrott. which sad event occurred at his home, five miles north of the city, on Monday, March 23rd, 1896, in the eighty second year of his age. He was buried in the family cemetery, near Andrew's Landing, on the following day, under the auspices of the F.& A. Masons. Judge Parrott settled in this county in 1835, having moved from Knoxville, Tenn. He represented the county in the only two constitutional conventions held by our state, and held the office of circuit court clerk for fourteen years., and served as County and Probate Judge for one term. There never lived a purer or more honored citizen in this county, and to his last day on earth wore his crown of labor, love, and forebearance meekly, submitting to his long suffering with resignation and courage to the last. May the rising generation imitate his noble life, and that in death they too may be prepared to go in peace. Judge Parrott was a member of the Bar of Eastern Arkansas, and highly esteemed by all the courts. The service was officiated by Dr.H.P.Dooley and Gen.Geo.P.Taylor, in a sweetly impressive manner. He was a charter member of the W.M.W. and brethren of the Rising Star Lodge, and was the first Secretary of the lodge.-3-27-1896 SEE BIO |

PASLAY ANNA C. MRS. DOZIER 1841 4 23 1900 CITY | Death of Mrs.Anna C. Paslay-The hearts of numerous friends and acquaintances were stricken with sorrow, and universal sympathy went out to the family and relatives Monday morning, Apr.22,1900, when the news of the death of the beloved third wife of Rev.W.H.Paslay was disseminated. The biography of this noble christian lady is a continuous picture of constancy and fortitude, and in the twilight of her earthly existence, although painfully afflicted and laid low by agonizing infirmities, she held firmly and steadfastly to the faith, trusting sweetly and courageously, relying firmly upon the promises of God, to whom she had surrendered all human influences, for the salvation of her soul. She was born in Jasper Co., Ga., in 1841, and came to Arkansas in Feb.1876, locating in Forrest City some years after her marriage in January of the year 1887. PASLAY W. H. ELDER 12 18 1831 2 11 1911 CITY | 2-10-1911 DEATH=REV.W.H.PASLAY=The Forrest City Times, Feb. 10, 1911. DEATH OF ELDER PASLAY. Venerable Reverend Passes Away Sunday Afternoon After Long Illiness. The death last Sunday afternoon at his home in this city of Elder. W. H. Paslay marks not only the passing of an able, earnest disciple of the Creator, but the one of the old landmarks of St. Francis county and of Forrest City. Another beloved citizen has gone to his reward, The voice of an able churchman is stilled, and in the hearts of countless congregations of those who in years gone by have listened to him as he expounded the gospel, as it was given to him to preach, a feeling of an expressible sadness comes, and in all of our city there was not a heart but quickened with pain and many eyes, but held a tear, when the sad tidings flew, as sad tidings always do, on Sunday afternoon, of the death of that venerable partriarch, who for so many years had faithfully served this people, and though his death was not unexpected, yet none the less were the tidings sad, and . . . less the tears that flowed. Elder W. H. Paslay was born in Laurens county, South Carolina, on December 18, 1831. His father was a Baptist minister and a physician of note. After receiving an academic course in the different branches of studies, he entered Furman University, in Greenville, S. C., and graduated with first honors from that unstitution. After this he moved to Dallas county, Alabama, where he taught school. In 1858 he entered the ministry, in which he has since been actively engaged. Mr. Paslay came to Arkansas in 1872, and located on a farm near Wheatley. He has been married three times, and has now living three sons and three daughters, as follows: Mr. H. W. Paslay, of this city; Messrs. R. E. and Willie Paslay, of Oregon; Mrs. J. T. Johnson and Mrs. Murray Hambleton, of ;this city, and Mrs. C. H. Paslay, of Memphis. Elder Paslay was greatly honored by his denomination, being elected Treasurer and Moderator of Mt. Vernon Association consecutively for the last thirty years. He held the position of County Examiner for several years, and was closely identified with the educational interests of this state and county. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity, having taken the degrees of the Commandery, and was ever ready to put into practice the honorable tenants of this illustrious fraternity, dispensing light in darkness, joy in sorrow, and sustenance to the needy. Elder Paslay had been in feeble health for a number of years, but only recently would he consent to give up the work he had so long and faithfully performed. He had been confined to his room and bed for over twelve months, and though all that medical skill, and the loving care and attention of a devoted family could do, was done to prolong his life, all efforts wre unavailing, and the gentle spirit passed to the Maker, whose disciple he had been through all the years of his maturity, and ". nls" was written in the story of a life well spent - a life that was not lived in vain. In his daily 2-10-1911 DEATH=PASLAY CONT.-walks he has been called upon to unite scores of loving hearts in the holy bonds of matrimony, and has spoken most comforting words to hundreds of families in this and adjoining counties, when in the Providence of God they have been bereft of loved ones. In the pulpit he was eloquent because earnest, and his supplications at the throne of Grace were the most beautiful we ever heard, and made the heart quicken with their sincerity. The funeral services were held from the Baptist church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Elder E. J. P. Garrott, officiating. Interment was had in the City Cemetery, to which last resting place the funeral cortege was followed by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, who went to pay their last respects to Elder Paslay, and to mingle their tears with the members of the bereaved family. The life of a good man needs no epilogue. Any words of commendation we might write of him, would be all unexpressive of the sincere esteem and veneration in which he has hald by our people, and by all those who knew and loved him. Would that we could pen words that would in some degree assuage the pain of the aching hearts of those who are left to mourn. But to them can come the sweet assurance that Elder Paslay was ready and willing to go - that he could, in all sincerity, face the inevitable, with a feeling of perfect peace and contenment, lay aside his earthly cares, and truthfully say, "Master, I am ready." To the bereaved family, we tender our sincerest sympathy in this their sad hour of bereavement. Their sorrow is a common one, for Elder Paslay was a welcome, familiar figure in this county prior to his illness, and the sorrow of his immediate family is shared by everyone who knew him intimately. May he rest in peace!- Brenda Huntley Added: 3/29/2007 |

PATTERSON JOHN CAPTAIN 1811 3 31 1903 UNKNOWN ? | Death of Capt.John Patterson-News reached the city Wednesday, of the death of Capt.John Patterson, the day previous, March 31,1903, at his home near Shell Lake. The Captain was well known throughout the county as a hunter of note, having killed more big game than perhaps any man in the state. His age, how long he has lived in St.Francis county, and from whence he came is unknown. He reared a family in the deep wilds of the bottom country, whose only unhappiness was the encroachment of civilization. He knew the bottom country as if it were laid out in streets, and could go to any point the darkest of nights. His pride were his dogs-a rack of deer and bear hounds, and the constant use of saddle and rifle, made him equal to Buffalo Bill. Genial and accomodating, he was in demand with hunting parties, who will miss him. Fear was a stranger to him. It is related of him that on one occasion he camped for the night, and was attacked by three panthers-a female and two grown cubs. He shot one, and killed the other two with clubbed rifle. His encounters with wild beasts would fill a volume. Yet he was modest in telling them. Notwithstanding the wild life of Capt.Patterson, he had many traits of character which showed that his heart was in the right place, and many friends will regret his demise. Peace to his ashes. Based on the following:Uncle" John Patterson, off the Military road, was a visitor to the city Friday. He is a typical backwoods pioneer, 86 years of age, and has made his home in the swamps since 1858. He is yet as agile as the average young man, an expert horseman, an quick, sure shot, and is a stranger to fear of any wild animal that roams the forest, and is a staunch friend of the levee. 6-4-1897-He was born in 1811, and came to St.Francis county in 1858.
