SANDERS CLAUDE C. UNK 9 1898 NATIONAL SPANISH AMERICAN WAR-Co.H- | It was my mournful duty, in company with Capt.Brady of Company H, and an escort of sixteen men, to go to the National Cemetery, Sep.7,1898, and pronounce "the earth to earth, ashes to ashes, and dust to dust" over the graves of Claude C.Sanders and J.D.Skaggs, both of Company H, and both buried at the same time. At the close of the burial service of the church a salute of six rounds (three for each man), was fired by the escort, after which our bugler blew taps, the call which puts the living soldier to rest on the ground, and the dead soldier to rest in the ground. SANDERS CLAY HALL 2 9 1879 12 26 1903 CITY NATIVE | AWFUL CHRISTMAS TRAGEDY=Hall Sanders, a sterling young man, shot to death by Gordon Casteel. Per Descendant, Jean Meaney:Documents collected by Judge Olmon Hall HargravesTranscribed Nov. 24, 2007, by Jean Rawlings MeaneyFrom FC NewspaperDec. 28, 1903Tragedy on Xmas NightThe killing of Hall Sanders on Christmas night by G. D. Casteel on the streets of Forrest City, was indeed a horrible tragedy from the effects of which the city will not soon recover.Hall Sanders was a young man full of the promise of youth-loved and esteemed by his fellows and the idol of his family by reason of being the youngest son. He was energetic, honest, and full of manliness and deep indeed must be the remorse of his slayer. The unfortunate incident cast a pall of gloom and distress over the entire city and those who had been celebrating and making merry left off their fun as the news spread and soon a regular Sunday night quietude prevailed, whereas an hour before everything had been in an uproar with holiday enthusiasm. At his preliminary hearing Casteel was bound over to the circuit court without bail. It is said the prisoner broke down upon hearing the decision of the court and that Squire J. B. Sanders, father of the deceased, arose and extended his hand, saying: "Gordon, I forgive you and I hope God will forgive you also." This was a most pathetic incident and showed the grand old man's greatness of soul.Hall expired in the hospital at Memphis upon the day following the shooting and was buried Sunday in the family burying ground at the FORREST CITY. The funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed.Funeral Notice. The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral of HALL C. SANDERS,at the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Sanders, this Sunday afternoon, 2:30 o'clock.Services at the Baptist church at 3 o'clock by Elds. Milton Hall and W.H. Dec. 27, 1903From Picture, it is found that Mr.Sanders was born in Hazen, Arkansas on Feb.8,1879 son Of Joseph B.Sanders and Mrs.Lucy Gwyn Sanders. 1-1-1904 Per Descendant, Jean Meaney:Found Obit in 1904 relaying the Murder in 1903 by Gordon Casteel, to Wit:Hall Sanders, a Sterling Young Man, Shot to Death by Gordon Casteel-No Reasonable Cause for the Deed, and Casteel Claims that it Was an Accident.-Shot Fired at Close Range from a S.& W. 38 Calibre Double-Action. Bullet Plows Its way Through Intestines..Heart of Forrest City Stirred.------The very heart of Forrest City was pierced and deeply wounded by the news of the awful Christmas tragedy which occurred at about 7:15 last Friday night on North Washington Street, at which time Hall Sanders was fatally shot with a 38-calibre Smith & Wesson double-action revolver by Gordon Casteel. The terrible tragedy occurred about fifteen feet north of the southwest corner of the vacant lot owned by Capt.J.W.Beck, across the street, north of the residence of Judge John Gatling, and was so sudden and unexpected that those present scarcely realized for several seconds that such an awful deed could have benn committed by one of their number, and even then could scarce believe their eyes and ears when they saw that noble young man sink to the ground and heard him cry out that he had been shot. It was simply appalling! It was wholly unexpected and none dreamed or had the slightest intuition of serious trouble. Had the bystanders thought for a moment that serious consequences would have followed the little misunderstanding, the fearful result could have been prevented. According to the evidence adduced at the examining trial of Gordon Casteel it seems that James L.Alley, Hall Sanders, Paul Pope, and Guy Eldridge met by chance on Christmas night about 7 o'clock at Sanders' Drug Store. Being filled with the buoyancy of Christmas, these young men agreed upon a proposal from one to purchase a little sport. Accordingly they purchased then and there a supply of Roman candles, torpedoes, and dynamite canes, and started. They went east to J.W.Beck & Co.'s corner, thence north on Washington street, and as they were crossing the alley between Folbre & Co.'s and Nelson & Co.'s saloons they met Gordon Casteel. James Alley, who was in front, thinking that Gordon was a deputy marshall, and knowing that the explosion of fireworks had been prohibited within certain districts by an order of the mayor, but not being satisfied as to the boundaries, stopped and asked Gordon as to the lines. Gordon told them they could shoot fireworks north of Jackson street, and they proceeded north, to Garland street, two and a half blocks north of where they had met Gordon. When they reached the Baptist church, or just north of it, they began to shoot Roman candles. Shortly after they left Gordon Marshall Rainbolt came along en route to the Iron Mountain depot, and Gordon asked him if he had seen these Marianna boys shooting fireworks. He saw the glare of the fireworks, but did not know who were shooting them, Gordon joined him, and they proceeded up Washington street to where the others were firing their Roman candles. Rainbolt said he was surprised to find that the boys were Forrest City boys, and he cautioned them to not fire into any person's yard or house, and not to fire low as there was danger of hurting someone. The boys disclaimed any intention to violate the laws, and there was quite a good deal of talk about the laws, and Alley said to Rainbolt that if they were violating the law, they would cease at once and pay a fine, but did not think they had violated the conditions of the mayor's order. The marshall thought that they had not violated the law, but cautioned them not to. In the meantime Gordon had wrenched a Roman candle out of Paul Pope' hand, broken it in two, and thrown it to the ground. Paul told Gordon he wanted 5 cents for it, and Gordon said "I'll pay you fifty", and he ran his hand in his pocket and gave Paul the money, which being being by this time a little sore, he took and put in his pocket. About this time Guy Eldridge spoke up and said,"well Gordon told us we could shoot north of Jackson street." Gordon asked hime what had to do with it, and Hall |

SANDERS GEORGE H. JUDGE 1849 7 4 1901 FCTIMES | 7-19-1901 News reached the city the latter part of last week of the death of Judge Geo.H.Sanders, which sad event occurred at the home of his brother-in-law, Mr.J.H.Crabtree, of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, Indian Territory, on July 4,1901, at the age of 52 years. Judge Sanders was well known by many of the leading and most prominent citizens of Arkansas, and especially in Eastern Arkansas was his acquaintance wide and distinguished, and his death will universally and sincerely lamented, although his death was not untimely from the fact that for several years deceased had been in a delicate state of health both mentally and physically. Geo.H.Sanders was born in Mississippi and removed to Cross County, Arkansas, shortly before or about the time he had reached majority, taking up the study of law in the office of one of the Brookfields. He was admitted to the bar about 1870 and shortly afterwards moved to St.Francis county and hung out his shingle in Forrest City. He built up a fine practice in the courts of Eastern Arkansas and was acknowledged the leading and brightest attorney of his time. Judge Sanders resided in this community from 1871 to 1883, when he removed to Little Rock, where he soon established himself as one of the most prominent practitioners of the legal fraternity of the capital city. He made money and it is said had amassed a snug fortune. but became too involved in one or two business ventures in Little Rock, which wrecked his fortune, health and reason, and a brilliant career was suddenly checked. Shortly after these misfortunes, he moved to St.Louis in the hope of re-establishing himself in his profession, but the strain had been too much, and his health began to decline. Deceased was a brother of Mrs.Brookfield, of Wynne, and a grand uncle of Mr.James Izard of this city |

SANDERS JOSEPH BOONE PROF. 8 19 1834 11 6 1910 CITY CSA-18TH MISSISSIPPI-FORREST'S CAVALRY | J. B. Sanders Passes Away. Aged and respected citizen succumbs to an attack of Pneumonia. Was sick only two days. Funeral Monday Afternoon From Baptist Church. Interment in FORREST CITY. The passing away on Sunday night at 11:20 o'clock of Prof. J. B. Sanders, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of St. Francis county, caused a great wave of profound sorrow to o'erspread the hearts of all our citizens, among whom he was widely known and loved. Prof Sanders had been ill only a short time, having been confined to his bed just two days, and a very few were aware that he was sick, or especially that his sickness was serious, and therefore the news of his death that traveled upon swiftest wings Monday morning, was indeed a terrible shock. He had been suffering with an attack of pneumonia, and thought everything possible to be done by skilled physicians and the loving care of his family and friends was done, it all proved of no avail, and the gentley spirit succumbed to the inevitable, and winged it's way to the great beyond, where it is at rest with its Maker, whom he served so faithfully and well for so many years. Mr. Joseph Boone Sanders was a native of North Carolina, having been born in Johnson county, in that state, on August 19, 1834. He was married in Mississippi in 1856 to Miss Eva Denson, three children having been born to their union, one of whom, Mr. R. H. Sanders, of De Valls Bluff, survives him. In 1865 he was married to Miss Lucy Gwyn, to which union seven children were born, five sons and two daughters. He is survived by his widow and five children, Mesrs. W. T., J. G. and J. T. Sanders, Mrs. Alice Longest and Miss Lucy Sanders, two sons, Messrs. Hall C. and Joe R. Sanders having preceded their revered father in answering the final summons. He was next to the eldest of eleven children, all of whom have passed away, and was the grandfather of eithteen children. He served gallantly for two years in the Confederate army as a member of Forrest's Cavalry, 18th Mississippi regiment, and was a active member of Forrest Camp, U. C. V., of this city, and of the Masonic order. He was a devout and consistent member of the Baptist church for 60 years, and was active in all of its good works. Several years ago he retired from active business life and devoted his time to his duties as a justice of the peace, which office he conscientiously and capably filled for many years. His face was a familiar one on the streets and around the place of business of his son, Mr. J. T. Sanders, where he made his headquarters, and always had a pleasant word and a hearty greeting for his friends and acquaintances. He was widely known and universally loved and esteemed, and his death removes from our midst a man whose place it will indeed be hard to fill. The funeral was conducted brom the Baptist church in this city Monday at 3 o'clock, Elder E. P. J. Garrott officiating in his usual solemn and impressive manner. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: V. B. Izard, J. D. Baugh, J. D. Verser, Bruce Smith, Jno. M. Prewett, Jno. W. Anderson. Interment was had in the FORREST CITY. The services at the church and at the cemetery were largely attended, a great consourse of people having attended to pay their last tribute of respect to their friend and neighbor, and to mingle their tears and convey at least a faing expression of their deep sympathy with those of the sorrowing member of the bereaved family, and in all those expressions of genuine and sincere sorrow The Times desires to join. Prof. Sanders was our friend and we esteemed him highly. His family has lost a kind and loving husband and a good father, his associates a loyal friend, his church a faithful devout member, and the city and county, an exemplary citizen whose good deeds will long be remembered, and who is now enjoying his eternal reward. "He has run the race, he has fought a good fight, he has kept the faith." May he rest in peace, and may God comfort those whose hearts have been so terribley lacerated and bereaved. Brenda Huntley. SCOTT JANE R. MRS. WALKER 2 17 1832 11 19 1895 FCTIMES | She has gone to her reward. It is our duty to record the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs.Jane R. (Walker) Scott, which deplorable event occurred at the family residence in this city, last Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mrs.Scott was born near Charlotte, N.C., Feb.17,1832, and at the time of her death was 63 years, 8 months, and 28 days old. A brief biological sketch provided by one of her sons gives us the information that in early childhood days, she left Charlotte with her brother, and they located in West Tennessee, where in Fayette County, she met and married Thomas W.Scott, with whom she lived happily until his death, in this city, in 1885, whence they came in 1883. To this union five children were born, four sons and one daughter-all of whom survive her, namely, Dr.W.W.Scott, of Haynes; Esquire James L.Scott, of McDaniel;Chas.B. and Peyton Scott of this city;and Mrs.Esther Gray, now of Marlin, Texas. She has been in bad health for several months, and for six weeks immediately preceeding her death, had been suffering with malarial fever. She was a consistent member of the Methodist church. The remains were interred in Danceyville, Tenn., besides those of her father, to which place they were sorrowfully followed by James, Charley, and Peyton.11-22-1895 |
SCOTT MARY A. MRS. 1835 3 16 1900 CITY | Two Funerals-In the evening at 3 o'clock, we were again assembled at the Methodist church with a large concourse of friends and relatives where Rev.W.C.Davidson preached an inspired and elequent sermon in eulogy of the life and character of one of our most venerable women, Mrs.Mary A.Scott, widow of the late Judge Robert T.Scott, and mother of Mr.Sam Scott, of Augusta, Ark. Mrs.Scott died last Friday, Mar.16,1900, at Jackson, Miss., where she had spent her last days, at the age of 65 years. Mrs.Scott was a noble, true-hearted, Christian woman. Her mission in life had been accomplished; her race was run. Since the death of her husband two years ago there had been nothing left for her but the waiting, listening intently-nye, we might say, eagerly--for the Master's call. Mrs.Scott has been a consistent Christian and member of the Methodist Church ever since she was a little girl.FORREST CITY TIMES 3-23-1900 |

SCOTT W. W. Dr. UNK 12 24 1898 FCTIMES | Death of Dr.W.W.Scott-A heart breaking tragedy occurred at Haynes, eight miles south of Forrest City Saturday evening, Dec.24,1898.Dr.William W.Scott and Mr.John Hughes had bad blood for some time, both men were wounded-unreadable.-12-30-1898 FORREST CITY TIMES-The Haynes Tragedy-The Marianna Index contains the following concerning the Hughes-Scott tragedy at Haynes Dec.24,1898. "On Saturday night Dr.Scott, who had been drinking, went to Hughes's store and told him he wished to see him privately. The two men then went into a side room of Hughes's store and after only a few words, Scott pulled his pistol and made an effort to fire at Hughes. The latter at the same time grabbed for the pistol, and in the scuffle, the weapon was discharged. Hughes then wrenched Scott's pistol from his hand and shot him three times, killing him instantly. From what we can learn the feeling of the community is that Hughes acted only in self-defense and was in no way to blame, and consequently no arrest has been made, although Hughes expressed a willingness to give himself up to the officers and proceed to trial. But we understand no prelimiary trial will be had."1-6-1899 |
