WILLIAMS BEULAH ALICE MISS UNK 6 11 1911 CITY
6-16-1911 DEATH=Birth: unknown Death: Jun. 11, 1911 Miss Beulah Williams. After Long Illness and Brave Struggle With Grim Reaper, Passes Peacefully to Her Reward. The Times has from week to week during several weeks noted the serious illness of Miss Beulah Williams, and her then condition, with sadness and still alarm, but with hope that she might yet win the brave and patient fight that she was making for her life; and even last week, we noted that her loved ones, who watched at her bedside thought her conditon improved. The supposed improvement was but the sweetness of her hope of heaven when it was revealed to her mind, June 11th, 1911, the pure soul left its earthly habitation of clay, and winged its flight to its Maker on high. And there was rejoicing in heaven. Miss Beulah Williams was a sister of Messrs. James W., of Wynne, and Elmer, of Washington state, and of Mesdames Fondren and O. E. Hambleton, of this city, and Rose West, of Felton. She was born near Union Springs, Alabama, and came to this county with others of her family many years ago. Of late years she has made her home at Wynne, with her brother Mr. Jas. W. Williams, and for several years was a in the millinery department and bookeeper of his store. She was entirely devoted to her relatives and they to her, and her untimely desmise is indeed a sad bereavement to them, and to many friends with whom she had surrounded herself by her kindly disposition and sweet devotion. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Elder Aldexander, of Wynne, assisted by Elder Garrott, the local pastor at the Baptist church, on Monday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, in the presence of a large congreation of relatives and friends which overflowed the building. In commenting upon her pure life and Christian character her pastor paid her glowing and deserved tribute. Friends spoke their love in generous and beautiful offering of flowers and all followed her earthly remains to the Forrest City cemetery where they were tenderly laid away to await the resurrection morn, when angels will sing: "Oh, grave where is thy victory, Oh, breath where is they sting?" and she will rise in glory everlasting. The Times feels deep and sincere sympathy for its friends, her bereaved brothers, sisters and other relatives. Her's was a lovely and lovable character, pure in every thought and deed, to whom they were deeply devoted. To them we know that our feeble pen can bring no surcease of sorrow, nor lessen their great loss one iota. We would that we could assurage their grief, or bind up their lacerated hearts, but this is divine, and God, who alone knows why it is best, says by faith we may see her again. To Him then they must go for consolation, and He will give them rest. Active Pallbearers:Capt.James Fussell/Mr.W.W.Campbell/Mr.Jno.W.Naylor/Mr.L.E.Davenport/Mr.Robert Benson/ and Mr.John W.Alderson.- Brenda Huntley Added: 3/13/2007 FORREST CITY TIMES NEWSPAPER JUN.16,1911.

WILLIAMS DAISY UNK 9 1905 UNKNOWN
The Forrest City Times. Sept. 15, 1905. A Frightful Tragedy. Sam Burroughs, a furniture salesman, shot and killed Daisy Williams and seriously injured William Elder of Jonesboro a few days ago. After shooting the other two Burroughs turned the pistol on himself, blowing his brains out. When the shooting took place no one else was present and the immediate causes of the crime are not known. Burroughs had been drinking heavily and this is supposed to be the foundation of the terrible affair. Attentions to the WilliamsWomen by other men had aroused Burroughs anger, but he and Elder were supposed to be on friendly terms. WILLIAMS MEDGER E. 9 23 1896 3 27 1908 FCTIMES
4-10-1908 OBITUARY=Colt, Ark.-Mar.29,1908-On the 27th of March, 1908, that dark and uncompromising Angel of Death visited the home of Mr.M.E.Williams and took therefrom its brightest and fairest jewel in the person of our little friend and schoomate, Medger E.Williams. Before we could scarcely realize that our little friend was sick, his precious body was consigned to the cold grave. But, alas, earth was not a suitable tabernacle for such a boy as this Dear Medgar, though, we will miss you greatly and oft in the solitude of life, our hearts will bleed and yearn for thy presence, yet we are willing that Heaven should have its own. Medger Williams was born Sep.23,1896 and died Mar.27,1908. Being about my own age, I believe I can truthfully say that of all my schoolmates and associates, I admired him most. He was trusted and loved by his old gray haired grandfather, Mr.N.G.Williams, Sr.. After the death of Mrs.Williams, Medgar was almost the sole companion of "Uncle Nat," and this staid old patriarch was made to sigh and tremble like the withering leaves of the forest when in the silent presence of his loved and idolized boy. Farewell dear Medgar; when my time comes to lay aside this mortal coll, will you stand upon the brink of that other shore and beckon me o'er the stormy deep. Howard Gordon Moore.

7-12-1912 GRIM REAPER TAKES PIONEER- Once again, the Grim Reaper has laid a heavy toll upon our devoted people, and once again his harvest of the dead has been fruitful and freighted with the soul of one of St.Francis' oldest and best citizens, in the person of Hon.W.E.Williams, ex-sheriff, prominent politician and successful farmer and business man, who passed to the arms of Him who gave, on Thursday evening, July 11,1912, of apoplexy. "Bill Williams is dead!" Mr.Williams had been known to be in failing health for some months, but had not been confined to his bed. He was up in town until 10 am, when he went home complaining of a neuralgic-like pain in his head. Mr.Williams was a native of Maury county, Tenn.. having been born there May 16,1850, and was thus entering his sixty third year. His family moved to the county in 1855, his mother having died some three years earlier/ At the age of twelve, his father died and he was thus left an orphan. In 1871 he was married to the only daughter of Captain Edward Haskins, who died of pneumonia scarcely five weeks after they had plighted their troth. On the last day of July 1873, Mr.Williams was again married to Miss Eddie Chambliss, youngest daughter of Judge.& Mrs. Edwin Mallory, of this county, and to their union fifteen children were born, six boys, Eugene, William, Robin, Mallory, and Russell, six girls, Mrs.Jef Winship of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; Mrs.Fred Atkins, of Holly Grove, Ark.; Mrs.Geo.E.Parker, Miss Bessie Mae, Sweetie or Evelyn, and baby, all of whom survive him. Mr.Williams was elected sheriff for ten years starting in 1892, when he voluntarily resigned. In 1906, on the death of Dr.J.D.McKnight, he was appointed sheriff, and remained until 1908, when he stepped down again. He has served since 1902 on the State Board of Charitable Insitutions. He was a man of rugged, sterling integrity, sober and industrious. His good word earned the nickname, Honest Bill. WILSON D. M. SHERIFF 9 1 1840 5 18 1889 CITY
Not since awful gloom over the deaths of Sheriff Wilson, Marshall Frank Folbre, and Deputy Clerk Tom Parham, as a result of the awful riot on May 19,1889; the accidental drowning of our dear friend, John V.Webb, on April 22,1892, and the shocking death of Joe Sanders and Robert Rollwage, as a result of a powder explosion which occurred at L.Rollwage & Co.'s store on the 18th of June, 1898, has there ever been such a pall of darkness cast upon the entire community as this awful tragedy as this awful tragedy has done. In addition to the terrible grief of the deceased's relatives, the sweet little family and the devoted mother and sister of Gordon Casteel are almost crazed with grief and sorrow that such an awful, fearful deed should have been committed by their loved one, and that he should be incarcerated in a prison cell. It was later learned that Gordon had not been deputized by Dr.McKnight, sheriff, or Deputy Murphree, Marshall Rainbolt, nor by any one else. to act in the capacity of an officer of the peace.

WILSON ROSA LEE MRS. HIGGINS 12 17 1878 6 26 1907 HUGHES NATIVE
The Forrest City Times. July 5, 1907. Death of Mrs. Rosa Lee Wilson. Mrs. Rosa Lee Wilson died June 26, 1907 at 8:30 o'clock p. m. after an illness of fourteen days from premature childbirth and malarial complications, having been in bad health since last September. At times she seemed to be much better and able to be up, and a part of the time do her housework. But as time wore on she gradually grew weaker until she was confined to her bed, but by close attention from physicians and nurses, rallied and was able to be up part of the time. She visited her sister, Mrs. Belle Beck, at Caldwell, where she seemed to improve more rapidly, when she decided that a visit to Forrest City and also the home of her brother-in-law, Mr. H. J. Jordan, of Palestine, might add to the improvement of her health, and after having been there only three days, she suddenly relapsed and continued to grow worse until she fell asleep in Jesus for this separation of a soul from its temporal abode was like one falling asleep without a frown or a trace of pain. Deceased was a devoted member of the Missionary Baptist Church, a conscientious member of the Knights and Ladies of Honor and lived a model Christian life, ministering to the sick and afflicted regardless of race or color when it was in her power to do so. She was a daughter of William J. and Pat.. A. Higgins, and was born near Pine Tree, Ark., Dec. 17, 1878, and died June 26, 1907, aged 28 years, 6 months and 9 days. Her mother died when she was quite an infant, and her training, as she grew up, was left to her older sisters and to two stepmothers, one of whom still survives her, and well did she profit by their instructions and at an early day she sought the pardoning powers of Christ and became a Christian, uniting with the church above mentioned. She was greatly devoted to her father, looking upon him as her closest earthly friend, and regarding his word as law. Her devotion being such that she never entirely recovered from the shock befashoned by his death. At the age of nineteen she married Prof. James M. Wilson. Their union was blest with happiness, and God gave them two sweet baby girls, Willie Marie and Rosa Ernestine. But it was not God's will that they keep Willie Marie, so He took her from them at the age of four years thus giving her mother a cup of sorrow to which she never became reconciled, and during her last days she would point to Marie as her guiding star, telling her heartbroken husband that she was beckoning her to come up higher, and then she would insist that she would be with her soon. After the death of Marie, Mrs. Wilson suffered great anxiety, fearing that God would call Ernestine, too, and that she would be left childless and this dread remained with her to her death. While her greatest hope seemed to be to get well, she bore her sufferings with the utmost patience, ever trusting in God, but when she realized that the Saviour was in need of her, she seemed to be perfectly willing and ready to go, giving the keeping of her child over to its father and her aunt, Mrs. Belle Beck. Mrs. Wilson was buried by the Knights and Ladies of Honor. An escort of the Palestine lodge accompanyning the corpse from the home of Mr. Jordan to the depot and an escort of two, Messrs. Joe Stayton and Will Coffee escorted it to its destination. The remains were interred in the family burying ground at the Hughes cemetery, there being the ritualistie services of the Knights and Ladies of Honor, and Elder Newman of Forrest City Baptist church, conducting the religious exercises. She leaves a heartbroken husband, a little girl, four years old, five sisters and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. But, sad relatives and friends, console yourselves with the thought that Jesus does all things well and look to God, the giver of all that is good, for a more perfect consolation, as He has taken Rosa to live with Him and be one of the heavenly host. She is sleeping, sweetly sleeping in a new made grave today. We are weeping, sadly weeping. For our darlin's gone away. She is bl WIFE OF JAMES M. WILSON

WINTHROP H. W. 1839 2 21 1897 CITY
A gloom was cast over the community last Sunday morning when it became known that Capt.H.W.Wintrhop had passed into the mysterious beyond. The fall from the balcony was the cause of his untimely death. H.W.Winthrop was a native of Ireland, of Scotch and English parentage. His parents emigrated to this country when he was 4 years old and settled in Vermont. the Captain, as he was familiarly called, cast his fortunes with St.Francis County in 1865, first locating at Madison, then the county seat. During his thirty two years of citizenship, the esteem of which he was held is manifested by the many offices of trust which he filled. He held the office of chief clerk of the United States Bureau, was United States Assessor for the Eastern District of Arkansas, United District collector for the same district, Assessor of St.Francis County for six years. He was elected Mayor of Forrest City for two terms, and many improvements stand as monuments to his interest in public affairs. At the time of his death, he was 55 years of age, and leaves a wife and two daughters to mourn their loss. The funeral was conducted under the Auspices of the Knights of Honor. At half past 3 o'clock the remains were brought from the parlor to the dining room, (the former place being unable to hold the multitude of friends and acquaintances) where the beautiful services of the Episcopal Church were read by Rev. Mr.Edward L. Ogilby. At the conclusion of the services the cortege that followed the remains to the "city of the dead" was perhaps the largest the city has known. Mrs.G.A.Winthrop wishes to express her gratitude to all the friends of her family for the many deeds of kindness offered during the period of her husband's illness and the final disposition of the remains; especially she wishes to thank the inmates and patrons of the hotel for their many kind considerations.2-26-1897

WITHERS THOMAS JEFFERSON UNK 12 31 1903 WIDENER
T.J.Withers Killed-Sam McFall, a farmer shoots him twelve times through the intestines. News reached here by telephone yesterday morning, Dec.31,1903, of an shooting affray between T.J.Withers, a merchant of Widener, and Sam McFall, a farmer, with whom he had business. McFall had brought a bale of cotton in, and after a spirited bidding between the buyers at Widener, it was sold by Withers consent to McBee, McFall claimed money for picking the cotton, and McBee told him to come back in the morning and he would pay it. In the meantime, Withers stopped this payment, claiming the cotton on account. The men were standing on or near the railroad track, in front of the business place of Withers, and had some conversation about this money for picking, McFall insisting that he was entitled to it and Withers should pay it. McFall says that Withers remarked to him, "Sam, you're going to keep on until I hurt you bad and quick; I'll do it now," and with that he backed off and drew his gun, a 32 calibre S & W, and began firing. McFall drew his gun, but it hung in his sweater, but in an instant both men emptied their guns. Withers shot five times at McFall, three shots taking effect one in his left forearm, and one on either side of his body, about six or eight inches below the armpits. None of these wounds are serious, all being flesh wounds. McFall shot four times, one cartridge missing fire, two of which took effect in the abdomen of Withers and from which he died in about three hours. McFall called the sheriff to give himself up,and then came over on the morning train. He was taken to the doctor's office, where he had his wounds dressed, and then was put in jail. Withers, though close in money matters and considered a hard man to deal with in a financial way, was a good citizen, a member of and leader in the church, and had the best interests of the community at heart. His untimely death is sorely regretted by a large circle of friends, and McFall himself says he is very sorry indeed that the tragedy occurred. His family has the sympathy of the entire community. 1-1-1904 SEE BIO

WOMACK JOHN 1852 4 12 1912 CITY
4-19-1912 DEATH OF JOHN WOMACK=It is sweet to think and know that friendship is more than a mere word. The death of Mr.John Womack and his burial prompted these thoughts, held at the Underaking Parlors of A.L.Stevens, where a few old time friends, who had stood by John from early days, through sickness and death, ministering to his wants, gathered to pay last tribute to his memory. Rev.F.W.Gee of the Methodist church, officiated. Interment was had in the Forrest City cemetery when the cortege left the parlors to follow the remains to the final resting place. John was a native of Virginia, and was about sixty two years of age. He moved to this city in 1872, coming here with his cousin, Abe Long, and going into business with him in a building which then stood near where Turley Bros. & Gilliam are now doing business. Later the business was moved to a building where now stands Hatcher's Livery Stable. John here following his trade as a tinner. Reverses came to this business, and he was thrown on his own resources. He worked his trade here at Forrest City, in Memphis, and at other places until failing health compelled him to cease his labors. John had been in bad health for several years, but had been able to keep going through the assistance of a few faithful friends. His last modest venture was made a few months ago, and he was able to scrape along until the last illness made him bedfast, until he passed last Friday night, Apr.12,1912.

Killed by Cars=It was reported that Squire John J.Ables, of Little Rock, had been run over and killed by the north bound No.102, Engineer William Burns, and Conductor Chas.Moore of the St.Louis and Iron Mountain RR passenger train at Colt last night. The Times called up Mr.Block, at Colt, this morning, and he informed us that a man had been killed by the train last night, about two miles south of Colt, on the Littlefield farm; that he was a stranger; that he had a bible in his pocket, with the name Hiram Warnick written on the fly leaf; that he had evidently been very drunk; had vomited, and had a bottle of whiskey on his person at the time of the accident. The Coroner Alley went up this morning, and has not returned as we go to press.2-12-1904 It is learned that Coroner Alley had the body buried by a man in a hole, no coffin or blanket, shame on him as he had money and it should have been used by the Coroner to bury the stranger in a better manner than that which he had done. Oscar Woolridge Killed=H.N.Wheeler fires on friend with deadly result. Left Memphis on friendly terms, and Wheeler killed Woolridge apparently because he was restrained from attacking flagman. Mr.Wheeler is a son of Capt.H.P.Wheeler, who has large mill and lumber interests in Madison. It seems that while taking a buggy ride home from the depot, an Illinois Central train stood blocking the intersection where they wished to pass, Wheeler had been drinking, and threatened the flagman, and took a shot at him, when Woolridge interfered, whereupon three shots were put into his breast, killing him about six hours afterwards. Woolridge is unmarried, and was an overseer on the plantation of Dr.J.C.Conners. The body was interred in the family cemetery ten miles east of Lake Cormerant. WORD ADLAI C. UNK 4 1 1899 CITY
FORREST CITY TIMES 4-7-1899 Death of A. Word-"Adlai Word is dead." was the sorrowing sentence repeated by many of Forrest City's best men and women last Saturday evening, Apr.1,1899, that gentleman having expired at his home near Riverside, Ark. No more honest man ever lived than Adlai; brave, patriotic, and as tender hearted as a babe. Selfishness he abhorred. In loyalty and fidelity to his friends he equated Damon and Pythias. He was a characteristic Kentuckian. He came to Arkansas in 1872, and for many years was closely and pleasanty associated with our people, and when it was learned by his many friends here that he had been stricken with pneumonia, and subsequently had succumbed to the dreaded and fatal disease, universal sorrow and sympathy prevailed. He leaves a wife and one child. Amid a concourse of sorrowing friends, with tear stained cheeks, we registered Adlai as an inhabitant of the City of the dead, at Forrest City Cemetery, on April 3rd. We covered his grave with flowers, and left him in the hands of a just and merciful God. May that God watch over and protect the devoted and sorrowing wife, and the orphaned girl now just blooming into womanhood, and who was Adlai's idol; and in the by-and-by may they be a reunited household with the dear children who have preceeded them to the home of God.

YOUNG CHARLEY UNK 10 20 1902 UNKNOWN
BOUND AND BURNED=Charley Young, charged with rape and murder of Mrs.Ed Lewis.-Slowly roasted to death. The jail broken open with sledge hammers, and the infuriated mob, heedless of Sheriff Williams's pleadings, takes the prisoner from his cell, and burn him at the stake. He had been arrested after circumstantial evidence pointed to his involvement, and after the Coroner's inquiry by Mr.Alley, he had been put in jail. Deputy Murphree attempted to stop the mob at the jail, and then Sheriff Williams also intervened, and Constable Sellers was given the keys by Murphree, who then was overpowered. After breaking into the jail, they found the keys to the cell, procured Young and proceeded across the railroad, and to the square where he was bound to a telephone pole. At this time Marshall Rainbolt, at great risk, and prevailed upon them to take the man out of the city, and this was done, going about a mile east of the city near the stave factory, where the retied Young to a small tree, where the husband, Ed Lewis lit the fire. As the fire spread, Young accused Henry Armstrong of the awful deed, so they removed him from the tree and they went after Armstrong, and while waiting, he made a fatal statement, that contradicted the Armstrong charge, and they proceeded with the execution. In words of the witnesses, his dying words were, "I done it" while dying. The charred remains of Young were buried at County expense on Tuesday. 10-24-1902

ZOLINGER IDA MRS. CRIPPEN 1888 12 30 1904 UNKNOWN
1-6-1905-Thrown From Horse and Killed=A very sad and distressing tragedy occurred last Friday, Dec.30,1904, at on near Madison, four miles east of this city, in which Mrs.Ida Zolinger, the 16 year old wife of Mr.Willie Zolinger, was killed. The particulars as near as we can learn are as follows: Mrs.Zollinger, it seems was very fond of horseback riding, and perfectly fearless. She was passing Scott Bond's place and admiring a young and fiery animal, proposed to ride it. She was informed that it would be dangerous, but could not be dissauded from the perilous undertaking, and the beast was saddled up and she mounted and galloped away. It is supposed the animal became unmanageable, and that her foot was caught in the stirrup and she was dragged to death. Her body was picked up on the hill near Spring Creek church, at the Uncle B.Bond place. Her neck was broken, head crushed, one eye forced from its socket, and Mrs.Chaney, who assisted in preparing the body for burial says she was horribly bruised all over the body. Mrs.Zolinger was the former Miss Ida Crippen, and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. Her husband is employed with the Walton-Knox Box Factory, and is almost prostrated with grief at the loss of his young and beautiful life partner. He is less than twenty years of age.
