FACTS & OBSERVATIONS CONCERNING THE BETHEL CEMETERY:

*****NOTE*****
*There is evidence of a number of unmarked graves. It is recommended that NO burials take place in the spaces between graves in the upper part of the cemetery. Hearsay information from past generations indicated that there are unmarked gravesites in those areas.

*The first 5 rows in this cemetery are uneven rows. This survey is as accurate as possible considering the ages of many of the gravesites and conditions of various monuments.

*There are monuments for 26 Unknown Soldier CSA graves placed by the Sons of the Confederacy in 1998. These are located in Rows 6 and 7.

*Some of the very old monuments are broken and in bad repair. Many of the dates are illegible or almost illegible. There is a possibility that some of the dates listed in this survey are incorrect due to age of the monuments and weathering of the stones.

*The Phillips CSA monument is very informative of that family. The following is inscribed:
On the Monument Face:
Paschal H. Phillips
Born Oct. 2, 1837 Died April 2, 1884
Husband of Elizabeth Ann Moody
Born Jan. 21, 1845 Died Dec., 1904
Buried in Greenwood Cemetery
Hopkins County, Texas
Her Parents
Father: Benjamin R. Moody Born Aug. 24, 1805
Mother: Minerva Ann Born Feb. 27, 1823 in Tennessee
Both Buried Here in Bethel Cemetery
On the Monument Back:
Children of Elizabeth and Paschal Phillips
Cora Lee (Williams) Born Dec. 12, 1866
Mary Ellen (LaGrone) Born May 27, 1868
Lillie Frances (Chaffin) Born April 14, 1870
Benjamin Asa Born Dec. 21, 1871
Thomas Theodore Born July 18, 1874
Lou Etta (Turner) Born April 23, 1880
Paschal Milton Born Oct. 27, 1883

(continued on the Phillips C.S.A. Monument Back)
Paschal Phillips was a C.S.A.
Veteran of the Civil War
Enlisted June 7, 1861
Paroled April 26, 1865 at Greensboro, N.C.

*The Davis markers are for the brothers & sisters of K.L. and K.A. Davis who died during a measles epidemic. Four of the children were very young and their names are unknown. The other is for a sister named Burma Jane who died at approximately age 12.

*There are two graves marked only by red bricks (one each gravesite) between the graves of Orlene Smith Davis and Maude Hutcheson Cox.
