["The Norfolk Weekly News-Journal", Norfolk, Nebraska, dated 9/04/1903]

*Deputy Sheriff Assassinated.  El Dorado, Ark., Sept. 3.-Dallas Hunter, a Deputy

Sheriff of this county, was assassinated about four miles west of town, while on

the road from his home to El Dorado, to see his sick baby. He was returning to

El Dorado to consult his brother-in-law, Attorney W.C. Holbert, of Temple, Tex.,

relative to leaving this county, because it is claimed, his life had been threatened.

Hunter had been deputy sheriff since the March circuit court, and was a friend of

Guy Tucker, now of Little Rock, and of  W.P. Lee, who was assassinated on July 6 last.

It is believed that the killing was the result  of an old feud, Hunter having been

a close friend of W. P. Lee, who was assassinated July 6, last. Hunter was connected

with some of the best families of the county.  He leaves a wife and four small children.

A posse with blood-hounds went to the scene of the killing.  The blood hounds took

the trail, and at last accounts were still running the trail of his assailants.  The assassin

stood behind a tree, and at a distance of about thirty feet shot  Hunter from his horse.

A load of twelve buckshot struck him full in the back. It appeared the assassin had

been there for twenty-four hours.  Guy Tucker intended to return to Little Rock this

afternoon, but owing to rumors of the intended assassination of him he got off the

train in the outskirts of the city and returned to town.

In the assassination of Dallas Hunter yesterday and the murder of  W. P. Lee on

as the result of that feud.  With them as two of the victims, the complete death list

is as follow: Oct 9, 1902 Tom and Walter Parnell and Constable H. L. Dearing

killed in a street fight in El Dorado. July 6, 1903 W.P. Lee assassinated near Lisbon.

Aug 8, 1903 John F. Parnell killed by Guy B. Tucker..

Earnest efforts have been made by the citizens of El Dorado and of Union county

to prevent a recurrence of the troubles, and a law and order league was organized

by representative people for the purpose of bringing about peace and preventing

lawlessness. Although it cannot be asserted conclusively that the assassination of

Hunter and Lee is traceable directly to the Tucker and Parnell troubles, each

forms a  chapter in the series of tragedies that have stirred feelings.

(Arkansas Democrat) William P. Lee was murdered this morning about

6 o'clock by an unknown person.  He was on his way from his house

to the lot to feed.  Will P. Lee was a half-brother of Constable Peters of

El Doradfo, succeeding H. L. Dearing who was one of the three men

killed in the street duel October 9 last.  He was an especial friend of

City Marshal Guy Tucker, who was so dangerously wounded at that

time.  It is not known who fired the shot that killed Lee.

[Additional Particulars] The Democrat this afternoon received the

followin additional perticulars from its El Dorado Correspondent

concerning the killing of Lee: "El Dorado, July 6. –(Special.) – Will Lee

lived nine miles west of El Dorado, near Lisbon, and was shot and

instantly killed by unknown parties.  No one saw the shooting.  The party

fired from the bushes nearby.  The party who brought news to El Dorado

heard the gun and saw Lee for a few minutes and hurried here with the news.

The cornoner and officers have gone to the scene.  His neighbors

said he had no enemies there.  El Dorado is excited and some

think it is a revival of the affair here of a year ago."

*From "The Norfolk Weekly News-Journal", Norfolk, Nebraska,

dated September 4, 1903:  Depurty Sheriff Assasinated.  El Dorado,

Ark., Sept 3.- Dallas Hunter, a deputy Sheriff of this county, was

home  to El Dorado.  Blood-Hounds are on the trail of his

assailants.  It is believed that the killing was the result of an old

feud, Hunter having been a close friend of  W.P. Lee, who was

assassinated July 6, last.
