*aka  “Brother Sam”  or  “Sammy”       *OB

*Fourth child of Reverend Dr. Flournoy Shepperson &  Nellie McGill Shepperson of  SC.

*Three siblings were, Flournoy, Jr., Fannelle, and George Shepperson.

*Brother Sam grew up in Greenville, SC.  Attended Columbia Bible College; Graduated from

Furman University & Faith Theological University.

First came to Arkansas in 1949 to help his sister, Fannelle Shepperson, with a Vacation Bible

School for their Uncle Dr. David Shepperson, who at the time, was pastor of First Presbyterian

Church of El Dorado.

After coming to Arkansas, Brother Sam met & married the love of his life for 59 years,

Dorothy Jean “Dot” Lyle Shepperson, passed in April 2018. They worked side by side

through out his long ministry career.

Brother Sam met a group of people in the Marrable Hill Road area, who were interested in

starting a non-denominational church.  Sam took the job with a salary of $200 per month.

Brother Sam went on to become the pastor of Marrable Hill Chapel for the next 46 years.

During his lifetime, other ministries included Real Life Club, Victory Bible Camp, El Dorado

Theological Seminary radio recordings.  After his retirement from Marrable Hill Chapel, he

pastored an additional 10 years at Scotland Presbyterian Church in Junction City, Arkansas.

Reverand Sam is survived by three sons, Lyle McGill (aka Mac), John Hampton (aka Jac),

and Joel Zachary Shepperson (aka Zac).  *Location of burial unknown.

His noted burial here at Scotland Presbyterian Cemetery is speculation on my part.

* I have tried to fill in some dates or provide more than the year if that was all that was given.

There are a set of books referred to as the “Arkansas Death Indexes  1914-1950”.

A set of these books can be found in most libraries & or genealogy societies here in Arkansas &

they are also posted online at Ancestry.com, if you happen to have an account there.

The books give the person’s name, county they died in and the date.

If someone died during this time frame, & their name is not found, then you

cannot obtain an original death certificate for them. Arkansas started keeping birth /

death statistics in 1914.  Unfortunately, it was not enforced until the 1940’s.

It all depended on whether, a doctor, the family, or a mortuary bothered to register

the birth or death with the state and since many occurred at home without a doctor

 in attendance, many went unregistered.
