      OBITUARY for NANCY (FISHER) SUGGS

"Grandma" Nan Suggs died Saturday Nght

Nancy L. Suggs, Choctaw township's

oldest citizen peacefully passed away

at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George

Arnold, with whom she made her home at

10:35 o'clock Saturday night, January 18,

1936, aged 87 years, 10 months, and eight

days.  The body was interred in the Huie

Cemetery Sunday afternoon beside that of

her husband, following impressive funeral

services at the home conducted by Elder

Ross of Harding College, Searcy.

"Grandma Nan", as she was known to her

many friend, was born in Southwest Missouri

March 10, 1848, the daughter of Richard and

Elizabeth Fisher.  On March 8, 1868, she was

married to Charles L. Suggs and immediately

following the ceremony they started to Arkansas

to establish a home.  The trip was made in a

wagon, said to have been the first thimble skein

wagon ever brought to Van Buren County.

They arrived on Holly Mountain, northeast of

Clinton, March 28, where they stopped for a

few months, later settling on a homestead in

Choctaw township just north of the present home

of C.L. Kidd, one of their grandsons.  Eighteen

years later they moved across the Choctaw at

what was later known as the Sam Jennings farm.

Four children were born to this union, all of whom

survive as follows: Mrs. Lucy Arnold and Mrs.

Betty Kidd of Choctaw, Mrs. Dovie Fisher of Arizona,

and Miles Suggs of Choctaw.  The husband and father

passed away April 10, 1922.  Seventeen grandchildren,

34 great-grandchildren also survive.

Fifty-six years ago, 1880, she made profession of her

faith in Christ uniting with the Christian church at

Choctaw, with which organization she continued to hold

her membership until the day of death.  On June 5, 1934,

she suffered a paralytic stroke and from then on was

bedfastand helpless.  During these many months she

bore her suffering with patience and was fully prepared

to meet her Savior when the hour came.

"Grandma" was a good woman, a kind neighbor and a

true friend, possessing those characteristics which

endeared her to her family and friends.  No doubt in

recent months, due to her continued illness, she

sometimes longed for the hour of sleep. It has come--

all the tired muscles of her body are at rest.  The

anxious hours of anxiety, fears and troubles have past.

"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth;

yea saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and

their works do follow them."

Article in Van Buren County Newspaper, March 10, 1932

"Grandma" Suggs, 84 years young and going strong, mentally and physically.  Among the many vernerable old ladies yet spared to recite interesting incidents connected with the early days of Van Buren County, is Mrs. Nancy L. Suggs more familiarly known as "Grandma" Suggs of Choctaw township.  She is a native of Southwest Missouri and was born March 10, 1848 in Neosho, Missouri.

Last month it was grandma's pleasure to celebrate the 84th anniversary of her birth.  In honor of the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Arnold, where she has made her home since the death of her husband, "Uncle" Charlie Lee Suggs on April 10, 1922.

Mrs. Suggs maiden name was Fisher and with the possible exception of a half-brother, from whom she has not heard from in years, she is the only surviving member of her immediate family.  Her marriage to Charles Suggs took place March 16, 1868.

Immediately following her marriage in the company of her husband, she left South-West Missouri for Van Buren County, Arkansas to find a home.  The trip was made overland in what is believed to have been the first thimble-skein wagon ever brought to the county.  Their first stop was mad on Holley Mountain, where they remained a few months.  They then moved on a homestead in Choctaw township immediately north of the present home of Grandma's grandson, C.L. Kidd.

After 18 years of residence on this homestead, Mr. and Mrs. Suggs moved to what is now known as the Sam Jennings place on Choctaw Creek where they lived 22 years. After one year spent on the place now owned by R. Jim Stobaugh, they bought the home of J.L. Kidd, just south of his present home where they remained for eight years or until the death of Charles Lee in  1922.

Mr. and Mrs. Suggs were the parents of four children all surviving as follows: "Lucy", now Mrs. George Arnold, "Bettie", widow of L. Linn Kidd, "Miles Suggs" all of Choctaw township, and "Dovie", now Mrs. George W. Fisher of Banner, Oklahoma.  Mrs. Suggs has 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Notwithstanding the fact that Grandma is now in her 85th year, she enjoys the best of health and activity, mentally and physically remarkable in one so well advanced in years.  Her recollections of days long gone by are now as fresh and distinct as occurrences of but yesterday and are related in a very happy and entertaining manner.

(A Note from Hazel Renfroe dated October 1998): My grandmother Nancy L. Suggs died January 18, 1936 at the age of 88 years.  I have a little black purse Grandma gave me in 1936 for my graduation gift.  It had a small round mirror and a celluloid clip type fastener.  I will never forget seeing her tuck her bible under her arm and take off walking to church every Sunday without fail.

Notes for LOUISA ELIZABETH SUGGS:

(Source of Information: Rebecca Shannon/Great-Granddaughter)

When I was 14 years old Granny Kidd (Louisa Elizabeth) was staying with my grandmother Julia Kidd at Choctaw for a while one summer.  I was sitting watching her knit wool socks on three needles when she asked me, "Child how old are you now?"  I told her I was 24 years old.   My goodness you would have thought I had told her I had leprosy!  She got very stern and said "Child, when are you getting married?"  Well, I  had to giggle at the thought.  I began to tell her that I hadn't even been allowed a date let alone to get married yet.  Granny stopped her knitting and shook her head in disbelief.  "Dear Child" she said "Don't you know you're almost past your prime? I'm afraid that you will end up an old maid if you don't marry soon."  She picked up her knitting and went back to work with the frown still etched in her brow.

She was always fun to sit and talk to.  She usually kept a pretty ironed hankie in her lap or tucked in her sleeve cuff and always smelled of Sweet Violets.  She could entertain us with making bunny ears out of her hankie and saying various rhymes.  One of them was - Wire Brier, Limber Locks, Three Geese in a Flock...

Much of the time she would have little glass vial of turpentine wrapped in the hankie.  It was her cure-all for everything from a sore throat to the vapors.  She would tell many tales to us children, most of which I can not recount but a couple are etched vividly in my memory.

The Civil War was two years over when Granny was born in 1870.  Still, the countryside was in grave disarray with Jayhawkers who came down from Missouri and Kansas.  They raided houses for food and livestock, for jewelry and money, and generally terrorized anyone they came in contact with.  Granny said that folks buried their ham and bacon in the dirt floor of the smokehouses trying to save their food supply from the raiders.  At sight of these scoundrels, family men of the community scurried into hiding for fear of being shot.  Women and small children suffered little abuse from the men.  They generally would make the womenfolk cook a meal for them or try to scare them into telling them where they had hidden food.  Apparently the women would be quite spiteful and make soup with the water that their baby had just been washed in or pour water down the barrels of the guns that were leaning against the door frame to wet the powder.  Granny said that on one of these raids the men came bursting into the house, ransacking and looking for booty.  Her father, Charles Lee Suggs, had been to Morrilton a few days before and bought Lucy and Betty beautiful ribbons to tie their hair up on Sundays.  The girls had hung them over the wash stand on either side of the mirror.  Needless to say their bright colors caught the eyes of the marauders and Granny sadly lamented watching the men ride away with their pretty ribbons tied to the horses’ bridles.  This probably happened around 1874.

Lucy and Louisa were also called “Betty” and “Eliza”.

Granny’s story of her marriage proposal from Len Kidd was always amazing to me.  She was nine years his junior and must have been a pretty little thing.  She told how Len would ride by their house on a big handsome horse, sometimes stopping to visit with whomever was on the front porch.  He rode the horse up to where she stood and said “Betty, when you get big enough to make me a shirt, I want to marry you.”

A few months later in 1884, Len rode by again and Betty called out “Len, I have made you that shirt.”  In January of 1885, Lucy Suggs, Betty’s sister, was to marry George Arnold.  Their mother, Nan, facing two approaching marriages, called Betty in and said, “Now Betty, I want you and Len to get married too.”  So, both sisters were married in a double ceremony on January 8, 1885, at their parents’ home in Choctaw.  This was the beginning of a marriage that lasted over 45 years.  When they were married, one of the first things they bought was a trunk.  It was given to me by Nell Goom Kidd in the summer of 1970.  It had been stored in the barn near her home and was about to be thrown away when I asked if she would mind if I had it.  Aunt Nell was cleaning out the barn and just wanted to be rid of it.  The condition is not good but it sits in my bedroom filled with many little treasures that my family has collected.  My husband and the boys know if the house catches fire they are supposed to throw the trunk and its contents out the window to safety.  They know how much it means to me.

My Grandmother Kidd told me the story of Granny Kidd’s stubborn streak.  It was about the time that Granny wanted her husband Len to bring in the wood for the cookstove.  She almost refused to do it herself.  They had several hands working in the fields and every day at noon the men would come in, sit down, and enjoy a bountiful meal prepared by Betty.  There would be fried meat, gravy, potatoes, corn on the cob, some kind of greens from the fields or the creekside, corn bread, a pot of beans and two or three desserts like stir up cake with caramel icing, egg custard pie, apple cobbler, peach cobbler, butter roll or vanilla pudding from scratch.  Betty got up one morning and started fixing dinner and was out of fire wood.  She went on and peeled the potatoes, fixed all the dishes for the day and set the pots on the stove and the pans in the oven.  When the men came in and were washing up they remarked they couldn’t smell the dinner cooking like usual and wondered what was wrong.  Len went in and saw what had happened.  The men had to eat cold biscuits and ham from breakfast for lunch that day and Granny never again went without firewood for the kitchen stove.

Granny recounted a story of a woman who lived on Choctaw Cree.  The woman was out doing her laundry and had a tiny baby lying in a dresser drawer that she was using like a cradle.  A bald eagle swooped out of the sky, snatched the baby from its bed and climbed out of sight in the afternoon sky.  The baby was never recovered.

One of the funniest things that I ever heard Granny say was probably the summer before she died.  My parents had gotten central air conditioning and the summer heat was stifling that year, so we set the thermostat to a comfortable 72 degrees.  Granny was staying with us for a few days so that she might be more comfortable and out of the heat.  When my Mom came in from work that afternoon, she asked Granny how the day had been and Granny replied, “Child, I have lived to be nearly 100 years old and this is the coldest July I have ever seen.  I am near frozen to death.”

Ida Belle’s parents were Samuel Rhodes Jennings and Mary Susan Bailey.  Miles parents were Nancy L. Fisher and Charles Lee Suggs Jr. and Charles Lee Suggs born January 4, 1844 in Henry County, Missouri.

Right after Nancy and Charles were married on March 17, 1868, they left Southwest for Van Buren County, Arkansas to find a home.  The trip was made overland in what is believed to have been the first thimble-skein wagon ever brought to the county.  They moved on a homestead in Choctaw Township.

It was about the turn of the century when Miles and Ida made an application for and secured the “homestead” of 160 acres of land on Bald Mountain.  All their children grew up on this mountain, walking two and one half or three miles to school.

Miles cleared the land, planted crops, orchards and vineyards and along with the help of the older sons and often help from the family, made a crop each year.  Ida and the smaller children dried apples and peaches and canned fruit in the summer months for family consumption and to sell.

Miles grew corn and brought in hay to feed his team of mules and cattle.  He took corn to the gristmill to make meal for bread for the family.  He always had a sorghum cane patch to make syrup or molasses for table use.  He kept bees to make honey for his family.  A large garden and truck patch was grown, providing fresh vegetables for the family each year.

The homestead was a very beautiful place with an elevation that gave a distant view in different directions.  Virgin timber covered all of it.  As the land was cleared for farming, Miles made hand-hewn railroad ties with a broad-ax.  He hauled the ties some twenty miles away in a wagon drawn by mules to sell to the nearest railroad at Shirley, Arkansas. The road to Shirley was very rough and he had the Red River to cross which made it a dangerous trip after a big rain.  He made oak rails to fence his fields and orchards from timber that grew on his land, the trees being cut down with a cross-cut saw.

All the young men, with families, who were beginning to carve out homes in the rough Arkansas hills, worked together at building homes and barns, clearing and fencing the fields and also cutting trees into wood for winter fuel supplies. They gathered often at the homestead with food so abundantly grown and prepared by them and spread out on tables to eat.

In general, they had a good simple life together always helping their neighbors and friends.  Life was good on the mountain.

Notes for VERLENA VALENTINE SUGGS:

Written by Brenda (Renfroe) Dunn, Granddaughter of Oliver and Verlena (Suggs) O’Dell:

Information and stories given me by my mother, Hazel (O’Dell) Renfroe.  Mom has worked very hard at this genealogy for many years keeping the tree limbs filled with names and the stories that go with them.  How thrilling it is to know the names and little stories that have been protected and passed down through our family for three hundred years.  We are working on going back even further.  Any information that we can add to our family tree is more than welcome.

The descendants shown here are Baily, Beezley, Bradford, Brown, Fisher, Grantor, Hardin, Hunter, Jennings, O’Dell, Payne, Renfroe, Spoon, Stanlee, Suggs, Summers, Williams, Willoughby, Woodard and there are many more to add as time goes by.  My Mother is Hazel Magel O’Dell and my Dad, Charles Lilbert Renfroe.  My Mother’s Mother was Verlena Valentine (Suggs) O’Dell and her Father, James Oliver O’Dell.  This story is about them, their ancestors and descendants starting with my mother. As we go along this genealogy trail, I will add stories Mom has written down.

Hazel was born on February 22, 1916 at Choctaw, in Van Buren Co., Arkansas.  Charles was born May 5, 1917 at Bee Branch, Van Buren Co., Arkansas.  He died March 20, 1995 in Wheatland, California in Yuba County, California.  They were married 56 years, 9 months, and 20 days when Dad died.

My sisters and I merge into the tree story as you read. You can find the family tree information for all of us by looking in the Renfroe Family Tree.  Charles Lilbert Renfroe and Hazel Magel O’Dell.

My grandfather James Oliver O’Dell information is in the O’Dell Family Tree.  James Oliver O’Dell and Verlena Valentine Suggs.  James was called “Oliver” by everyone.  Oliver married Grace Womack in 1912.  While expecting their first child, Grace began cutting pieces of material to make a quilt.  The quilt was left unfinished when Grand and the baby boy died during birth.  A grief stricken Oliver moved from Missouri, taking with him, the carefully packed quilt pieces.  He traveled to Choctaw, Arkansas where he worked at a sawmill owned by his cousins Vernie and Johnny Chilton.  The sawmill was located east of “Bald Mountain” on what was call “The Old Neuman Place” next to “The Yakley Place”.  Other workers at the mill were John Ward and Claude Ragsdale.  While working at the sawmill, Oliver met Verlena Valentine Suggs.  Verlena was the sixteen year old daughter of Miles & Ida Belle Suggs, whose “homestead” was on Bald Mountain at Choctaw.

In general, they had a good simple life together, always helping their neighbors and friends.  Oliver married Verlena and they settled in a home on Bald Mountain, where they had three daughters and a son.  Before long, they owned three farms on Bald Mountain.  Oliver and Verlena’s first born was a daughter named, Hazel, born in the old homestead of her grandparents.  Hazel often recalled many happy memories while growing up on Bald Mountain.  The family worked hard growing everything they needed to live on, yet, they had fun in the process.  Oliver was known to dance “a pretty good jig or two” now and then.  His long legs dancing and stomping on the wooden floor of their home brought laughter to all who watched.  They enjoyed good friends and neighbors.  Two of the neighbors were Dan Maulden and Butch Case.  For extra money, Oliver sharecropped out farm land and two of his farms and sold produce and molasses.  He made railroad ties and sold them to the railroad.  Loading up the railroad ties, he would then take them to the town of Shirley, Arkansas.  It was a full day’s travel for Oliver and horses pulling the loaded wagon full of ties over rough terrain through those Ozark Mountains.  He would return home with kerosene, flour, sugar, coffee, cloth and other things the family needed.

Hazel married Charles Renfroe, from Bee Branch, Arkansas, whose father was Walter Elmo Renfroe, a blacksmith, his Mother, was Margaret “Maggie” whose parents were Lankfords.  Charles bought the farm on Bald Mountain called the “Yakley Place” were Charles and Hazel’s first born, a daughter, was born in the home.  A year later, Charles and Hazel decided to move to California, where four more daughters were born.  Charles passed away in 1995 in Wheatland, California from heart failure.

In 1943, Oliver sold his three farms on Bald Mountain and moved back to Missouri where he bought a farm and lived until his death in 1957 after following a stroke.  Verlena then moved to Roseville, California, to settle near Hazel and Charles and five daughters that were now grown with families of their own.  Verlena married Mr. Charles Cope, former Mayor of Roseville.  When Mr. Cope died, Verlena returned to Missouri to live a little closer to “home” near where she and Oliver had lived.  Their only son, Harold O’Dell, now owned and lived on the farm with his wife, Ruby Lee Brown, where they raised two sons and a daughter.  They all live near the farm with families of their own.  Oliver and Verlena’s 2nd daughter, Delsie “Irene” Beezley remained living in Roseville until she died in 1996 from complications of Emphysema.  She and her husband, Lewis Beezley did not have children.  The 3rd and youngest daughter, Carolyn Williams, also lived in Roseville and moved to Missouri with Verlena.  Carolyn did not have children.

Before leaving for Missouri, Verlena gave the pieces of Grace’s quilt to Hazel. Verlena was blind from Glaucoma shortly before she passed away in 1983 at Fredrickson, Missouri from heart failure.  She was buried next to Oliver who lay buried next to Grace and infant son at the Grisham Cemetery, Van Buren, Missouri.  After making many quilts for herself and all five daughters and grandchildren, Hazel was 92 years old in 1997 and pieced together what she thought was her last quilt. She sat about the task of finishing the quilt for Grace.  At last the pieces were sewn together and the quilt with its beautiful pattern emerged as imagined by Grace eighty-five years earlier. It is truly a family quilt made by those who loved Oliver.

Notes for SAMUEL LEE SUGGS:

Notes for SAMUEL LEE SUGGS:

Samuel was born December 19, 1903, the son of Miles and Ida Belle (Jennings) Suggs.  Edna was the daughter of Thomas F. and Nora (Coleman) Maxwell, born April 10, 1907.

Sam always felt he was mistreated at home and at about the at age of 14, he left home.  He went to the wheat harvest in Kansas and later lived with the Lefler family in Clinton, Van Buren County, Arkansas. He was a truck driver for Mr. Lefler.  Don’t know how he met Edna, but they were married July 16, 1924 and to this union four children were born.

During the depression, he drove a truck and also worked for the WPA.  He was a road grader operator.  Don’t suppose they were any worse off than most people, he and Edna bought land and built a home in the 1930’s on Highway 16, out of Clinton, then about 1940, they had bought land and built a home on Highway 95, out of Clinton.  They always canned lots of fruits and vegetables and had a cow and chickens, so they always had enough to eat.  They were good years, except Mother (Edna) always seemed to be in bad health.

In 1941, shortly before World War 2, she broke down with TB, she stayed in the sanitorium for about eight months and the TB was arrested.  This was the most unhappy year of my life (Dorothy Lee), we moved to Boonville to be near the hospital,  the school was huge, new and strange to me, and I was so thankful when we returned to Clinton in the spring of 1942.

We finished school, James joined the Air Force, and was a tailgunner and come home a nervous wreck.

In 1945, my senior year in school, Mother again became ill, I went to school each morning, had my first two classes and went home to check on Mother.  She was bedfast, unable to even turn over.  I walked back to school for my afternoon  classes and returned home to fix supper.  In my heart, I guess I never truly forgave my Aunt Effie (Mother’s sister), who lived right across the road and could have checked on Mother.

It was a hard year for me but I wanted to finish school with my class which I did in May, 1946.

In the fall, Mother again returned to the sanitorium with TB.  Henry had come home from the war and we had already made plans to marry and went ahead with it.  He was running a service station in North Little Rock, and I stayed most of my time in Clinton, since Carl and Lena (Molena) were still in school and young and I felt they needed me, but in June, Mother left the sanitorium and they made plans to come west to see if it would help her.  They landed in Monument, New Mexico on the 4th of July, 1947.  I stayed in Little Rock.  James came to join the family that summer, Henry and I came in November.

Dad had gone to work for Warren Petroleum Corp.  Henry worked for a few places, including Dresser Engineers and the Electric Company, before going to work for Warren Petroleum Corp. in May 1949, now having 32 years service with them.  In September 1950, our only daughter was born, following by four brothers in the next ten years.

James settled down and married Jessie Mae Hammer.  He went to work for Contennial Oil Company, and now has about 30 years service with them.  They had one daughter and three sons (one set of twins).  They have lived most of their marriage in Aspermont, Texas, although their children were born here in Hobbs, New Mexico, before they went to Texas.

Carl, our youngest brother, gave our parents so much heck, they sent him back to Arkansas to finish school, where he graduated in 1950.  He returned to New Mexico and started to work for the General Telephone Company, with whom he now has about 30 years service.  He married Barbara Wynn in July 1951 and to this union six children were born, one dying at birth.  There were four boys and one girl (girls were scarce in our family).  They lived most of their married life in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Molena Mae (Lena) never finished school, she was ornery, gave the teacher fits.  She married Earl (Buddy) Stanton in July 1951, two weeks before Carl and Barbara’s marriage.  She and Barbara being about 16 years old.  Buddy worked for El Paso Natural Gas Company as a welder.  I believe he has about 25 years of service with them.  So you can see What the oil industry has meant to us.  They had four children, two boys and two girls.  They lived most of their marriage in Jal, New Mexico.

Mother’s doctor had told her, she was not strong enough to stand surgery, but a doctor in Dallas told her she had a 50-50 chance of having her lung removed.  So she told me she hurt so much that she wanted to take the chance, so in August 1951, she entered Baylor Hospital, in Dallas and they removed three ribs.  She was to have three surgeries done.  She came home for a short time and took a cold.  In September, she returned to Dallas for the second surgery, but in her weakened condition, she couldn’t make it, and the Lord took her home on September 19, 1951.

Dad married again about five years later to a Leonora Morgan.  He quit Warren Petroleum  and worked for the City of Hobbs until he retired about 1970, in bad health.  In the fall of 1973, he had prostate surgery and the doctor told Henry it was malignant, but his heart would give out before the cancer took him.  He also had emphysema, which made it hard to breath.  On April 2, 1974, we had a very bad dust storm and he had a very bad day.  That night he had a heart attack and was gone in a short time.

I have found most Suggs’ live to a ripe old age, if you notice your family sheets.  Most Suggs’ are Baptist.  The ones in Missouri were and the ones in North Carolina were.  One was a Baptist Preacher for 50 years in North Carolina and his sons were also.  But Grandma Ida’s family (the Jennings) were Church of Christ. I’m Baptist but maybe you wont hold that against me.

This is a little about our family.  We are just an average American family and proud of it, that is what our country was made of.

FATHERS OF THE RIDGE…..VOLUME III

Genealogical Sketches of Green and Clay Co., Ark., By:  George  W. Rowland, P.O. Box 702, Paragould, Arkansas 72450

Mr. Rowland provided the following information when Hazel (O’Dell) Renfroe contacted him.  Mr. Rowland wrote Hazel the he had checked the Greene Co., cemetery records and did not find a single Renfroe listed nor in the 1880 census. He said quite a number of residents of Salem TWP, moved into nearby Craighead Co., we could check the records after 1870.

Renfroe (Renfro) was born in Georgia 1802.  His wife Eliza was born in the same state 1808.

In 1820, this family was living in Pickens Co., Alabama and their children were James, b. 1832, Elfare (a daughter) b. 1834; Samuel P, b.1838; and Cornealia (a son) b. 1847.  Cornealia was born in Alabama, but all the other children were born in Georgia.

By 1860, James Renfroe, son of Samuel P. was living with his wife, Jincy E., in Salem Township and the couple had no children at that time.

By 1870, James and Jincy had two children, but their names are not definitely known.  E.J. Swindle born in Ark in 1854 was a member of their household.  (Perhaps he was a brother of Jincy?)

James was a Justice of the Peace in Salem Township, Ark.

The family Bible of “Quincy” also called, “Jincy”, was passed down through daughter Quixy to Lonnie Clinton Renfroe, son of Zachariah Taylor Renfroe II and his 2nd wife, Anna Zaskey Renfroe, and is at Lonnie’s home in Modesto, California.

Charles and Hazel were raised about 20 miles apart and never met until after graduation from High School.

The following is by Hazel (O'Dell) Renfroe:

I was working in the Court House in Clinton and he came into my office with a friend who worked there.  That was February 11, 1937 and he made a date with me that day before he left.  I was to go with my brother's ball team to Damascus that weekend and after that we continued our courtship and were married for 58 wonderful years with beautiful memories.

A NOTE BY: Brenda Frances (Renfroe) Dunn, granddaughter of James Oliver and Verlena Valentine (Suggs) O'Dell:

It seemed I spent my entire life watching my mother go through the dedicated routine each morning of sitting at her kitchen table and writing letters.  Over fifty-five years she has kept in contact with family living in other states, with old school friends, and every neighbor she and Dad ever lived by.  They write back and the letters keep flowing to this day.  My parent's memory capabilities were uncanny when it came to re-living things.  They could recall their lives clear back to when they were small children remembering everyone's names, what they looked like and what they did and said.

I finally found the "time" to read the memory notes, and stories of my ancestors, that mom had painstakingly wrote down over the years.  I appreciate them more now for everything they went through because I realize that my children and I are here today because of their own struggles, successes and survival.  At times, I laughed while reading something funny, then sobbed out loud with my heart breaking as I read about their tragedies.  How trilling, to know the names of ancestors and to read letters they wrote and hear stories of them passed down through the family from one generation to another.  For three hundred years, our family has recorded their existence and tried to keep their memory alive.  Our ancestors were strong people, who's faith in God, strong convictions, and love of family shaped an entire nation and our existence.  They left their homelands and bravely sailed the ocean to a new land hoping to fulfill their dreams.  Some were already natives of the land and roamed its borders proud and free as the original landowners.  Whether immigrants of original landowners, we exist because of the union between them and decisions they made.

Monuments have been built honoring our ancestors and located at historical sites.  One monument in Clinton, Arkansas, honors them as being the original pioneers to the area.  When unexpectedly stumbling across an ancestor's name in a history book, it makes one pround to be a branch growing on a tree with roots planted so deeply.  As we add our names to the family tree, let us not forget our proud hertiage.  We can draw from the same strengths, love, dedication and bravery that our ancestors were made of, for they remain here, deep within us.  Like mom would say, "We were put together with pretty good stuff."  And that's something to be proud of!!

names mentioned here are Jennings, Suggs, O'Dell, Fishers, Gantor, Summers, Spoon, Baily, Hunter, Stanlee, Bradford Williams, Willoughby and Payne.  As we gather more names, they will be added.  Any information you have that will make our family even more complete is absolutely welcome.  Hopefully, no one will be left out.  Through the grace of God, may our tree branches continue growing and spreading out.  As it was for us, let this information pass on down, protected and preserved for all the generatins to come.

Notes for PAUL LEROY (OSBORN) GARRETT:

Notes for PAUL LEROY GARRETT:

Paul LeRoy (Osborn) Garrett was born to Paul Osborn and Edna Davenport on August 09, 1925 in WaKeeney, Trego County, Kansas.  Paul Osborn and Edna Florence Davenport were not married at the time of his birth.

Paul LeRoy was taken by Edna’s sister, Bertha (Davenport) and her husband, Edward Daniel Garrett to care for until the time Edna was married.  Paul was married to Goldie Davenport at the time of Paul LeRoy’s birth.  Goldie was another sister of Edna’s.  When Paul found out he had a son, he went back to Kansas.  Paul Osborn and Edna Davenport were married in 1927.  After the marriage, Edna asked for her son to be returned and the Garretts refused.  So my father, Paul LeRoy was raised as a Garrett, but was never legally adopted by the Garretts.

Paul LeRoy married Martha Belle (Suggs) Britton on January 19, 1946 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada.  To this marriage four children were born.

Paul LeRoy and Martha Belle (Suggs) (Britton) Garrett lost their eldest son, Paul Randolph to cancer on January 13, 1995.  From there, they both seemed to go downhill in their health.  As all parents feel, Paul LeRoy stated that a parent is supposed to go before their children.

Paul LeRoy lost his wife, Martha on July 15, 1996 due to heart failure.  He moved to Lincoln, Placer County, California with his youngest daughter, Wynona Gayle (Garrett) Maxey.  He lived with her and her husband, James V. Maxey for approximately three (3) week until his death on August 31, 1996 in Roseville, Placer County, California.  Paul LeRoy and his wife, Martha Belle died within forty-seven days of each other.

(Source: Wynona Gayle (Garrett) Maxey)

Paul LeRoy enlisted into the Merchant Marines on August 11, 1943.  While stationed in Richmond, California, he met Martha Belle (Suggs) Britton while she was working at a soda fountain.  When he saw her, he told his buddy that she was the girl he was going to marry.  In 1946, he married Martha Belle (Suggs) Britton, daughter of Charles McKinley and Eula Lee (Holley) Suggs, in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada.

Paul LeRoy worked for PG&E as a lineman and worked installing the Hi-line (known as Goat Head Towers) up and down the state of California.  He also at one time worked on  the power plants up and down Highway 70 or as known as the “Feather River Canyon”.  He then worked for Sunset Moulding Mill in Live Oak, California for somewhere around 20+ years.  He was hurt on the job when stacks of lumber fell on top of him and two other men.  They said he was completely buried with the exception of his face and his chin was on a stack of wood about 5 or 6 inches off the ground.  Where he was buried, the rescue people didn’t know he was there and was throwing lumber off the other men on top of him.  After he was able to return to work, he worked there for a few more years and left.  The last job he held was for a crop dusting company owned by Thomas Bowles of Live Oak called “Bowles Flying Service” as a mechanic.

Paul enjoyed fishing, camping, panning and dredging for gold.  He spent as much time with his family as possible.  But a lot of the jobs he had, kept him away from the family during the week.

At one time, he even raced a stock car in Live Oak, California.  His car was a 1956 Chevy yellow in color with blue numbers and lettering.  The car number was 11.   He got the nickname of Tiger while racing and his oldest daughter Cherlyn gave him a coffee cup with a tiger face on it.  His youngest daughter, Wynona (Wendy) while helping her Mother clean some old items from cabinets ran across some of the newspapers, racing programs from the races and other items.  She took all these items and put them in a scrapbook for him and gave it to him for a birthday present that year.  He said it was one of the best gifts he was ever given.  Wynona now has the scrapbook in her possession.

Paul LeRoy saw three of his children marry and become parents.  Cherlyn (Sherry) and her husband, Jack Henderson, had two girls, Heather LeAnn and Sara Jacqueline; Paul Randolph (Randy) and his wife Shirley (Ola), had one son, Joshua Dean and then Paul Randolph married Lori (Zabell), had a daughter, Jordana Lee, but Paul LeRoy never got to see her; Wynona (Wendy) and her husband (at the time), Gerald Peck, had Melissa Dawn; and Gary and Cynthia had two boys, Jonathan William and Thomas Matthew.

A year and a half before Paul LeRoy passed, he had to watch his son, Paul (Randy) pass on from cancer on January 13, 1995.  He was a very proud father.

In 1991, Paul walked his first granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Peck down the aisle on her wedding day.  He said he was very nervous, but everyone thought he did a great job.  He got to see two great-grandchildren, Daniel LeRoy Mikel and Cassandra Lyn Mikel, before he passed away in 1996.

Notes for PAUL RANDOLPH GARRETT:

Paul Randolph Garrett was born June 17, 1948 in Yuba City, Sutter County, California and passed away January 13 1995 in Gridley, Butte County, California of Squamous Cell Cancer of the Bronchus, fifty-two days after he was diagnosed with the cancer.  The doctors stated that this type of cancer is a fast growing type.

Paul (nicknamed “Randy) should have been born about 150 years before his time, for the simple fact that he was an outdoorsman.  He hiked all over the United States, lived off the land, panned and dredged for gold.  He was never really happy being in one place to long.

When he passed away, he left two children behind, Joshua Dean (Garrett) Harvey and Jordana Lea Garrett.  He loved both of them very much, even though he didn’t get to be with them.
