Descendants of John Coffer

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1COFFER was born in England, and died 1675 in Charles County, Maryland. He married SARAH. She died in Charles County, Maryland.

Notes for JOHN COFFER:

John Coffer was among 24 head rights transported to Virginia by Nathaniel Pope some time before May 14, 1660. Nathaniel Pope left a will in Westmoreland County Virginia dated May 16, 1659 and proved April 26, 1660. In the settlement of Pope's estate these head rights devolved to Thomas Pope's oldest son Nathaniers and Major John Washington. Washington had married Nathaniers daughter Anne.

Subsequently on September 4, 1661 Thomas Pope and Major John Washington claimed 1200 acres in Westmore County by virtue of the transportation of 24 persons including John Coffer.

President George Washington born at Pope's Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County Virginia was a descendent of Major John Washington and Anne Pope.

The Maryland land records indicate that John Coffer transported himself and his wife into Charles County Maryland some time before 1669.

This indicates that John Coffer married his spouse whose name may have been Sarah in Virginia before moving across the Potomac River into Maryland. It appears that John and his wife were living in Charles County by November 25, 1663 the date of birth of his son John. A second son Thomas was born in Charles County on August 15, 1667. The third son Francis was born soon after most likely by 1672. There seems to have been one or more daughters.

Elijah Cofer born in 1820 met and married Mary Ann Cavin in 1847. It is noteworthy that his brother William married Anna Cavin a sister and possible twin to Mary Ann.

It's not clear why or when Elijah moved his family to Cullman County Alabama. It was about 1885 and probably due to the devastation of Atlanta Georgia during the War Between the States. Stories tell of the destruction of a cotton gin that was the family business, It is noteworthy that William left the area to settle in Chilton County Alabama where he bought or built a cotton gin business.
