THE LANIER FAMILY OF WHITE COUNTY, ARKANSAS

Written by Linda Kaye (Cope) Lanier

Tishomingo, Oklahoma

The Lanier family of White County, Arkansas are descendants of John S. Lanier and Martha Ella D. Ellis.

John was the son of David T. Lanier and Frances Frazier.  His mother died when he was about 5 years old and his father married a second time to Nancy Frazier, sister of Frances.  He made the move to Arkansas along with his father David T. Lanier, his stepmother, Nancy, his half-brother, Frazier, and his half-sister, Mary.

The Lanier family has been traced back to Nicholas Lanier, born about 1530 in Rouen, France.  He was “Flutist to King Henri II of France, but fled to London, England as a Huguenot refugee during the Protestant Reformation.  His passage was paid by the widowed Queen, Catherine de Medici.  In England he became a Court Musician to Queen Elizabeth I.  Three generations of Laniers served the British royalty as Court Musicians, Poets, and Artists.

Two Lanier brothers, John and Robert, sons of Clement Lanier and Hannah Rebecca Collett emigrated from England to British Colonial America in 1656.  John settled in James City, Virginia, but Robert went to the British Colony of Barbados in the Lesser Antilles.  His three sons, Robert, Clement, and Lemuel, later moved to Colonial Virginia, then migrated south to North Carolina.  Robert is the immigrant ancestor of John S. Lanier.  Robert’s grandson, William Lanier who moved from North Carolina to Nashville, Davidson Co. Tennessee about 1800, is the grand-father of David T. Lanier.

John, the eldest son of David T. Lanier, was born in Tennessee and lived there for the first 20-25 years of his life, but he lived in his adopted state of Arkansas for about 45 years.  The exact date of the family migration to White Co. AR is not known, but it was probably about 1870.

John had a brother, William Lanier, who did not settle in Arkansas with the rest of the family.  It is believed that he settled in North Texas.

There is no information about his half-brother, Frazier Lanier, son of David T. and Nancy Lanier after his mention in the 1880 White Co. AR Census listed as age 22, living with his parents.

John’s half=sister, Mary Frances “Fannie” Lanier is listed on the 1880 White Co. AR Censuses age 24, living with her parents, David T. and Nancy Lanier.  No record has been found for Mary Frances “Fannie” in 1900, but she is listed on the 1910 White Co. Census, living with her half-brother, John S. Lanier and family, listed as Mary Armstrong, a widow, age 55, mother of one child, but none who are living.  She may have been the second wife of one of the Armstrong men of White County, Arkansas.

John’s wife, Ella, is the daughter of Thomas Boothe Ellis and his second wife, Mary Carrington.  A biography of Thomas Boothe Ellis by Goodspeed can be found on the White County, Arkansas Rootsweb Genealogy site.

The known descendants of John S. and Ella (Ellis) Lanier are as follows:

First Generation

1. John S. LANIER.  Born 7 Dec 1848 in Davidson Co. TN. John S. died in White Co. AR before 1918, he was 69. Buried in Smyrna Cemetery, White Co. AR. Born on 24 Apr 1855 in Marshall Co. MS. Martha Ella D. died in Center Hill, White Co. AR on 17 Nov 1914, she was 59. Buried in Smyrna Cemetery, White Co. AR. They had the following children:

2    i. Walter W. (1875-)

12   xi. Mary E. (1898-)

13  xii. Unknown

John’s mother, Frances Frazier, died when he was about 5 years old and his father married a second time to Nancy Frazier, sister of Frances.  John was born in Tennessee and lived there for the first 20-25 years of his life, but he lived in his adopted state of Arkansas for about 45 years.  It is not known exactly when he moved to White Co. AR but it was probably about 1870. He made the move to Arkansas along with his father David T. Lanier, his stepmother, Nancy Lanier, his brother, Frazier, and his sister, Mary.  John had a brother, William Lanier, who settled in North Texas.  His brother. Frazier, may have moved to North Texas also.  He was married in White County in 1872 and made Center Hill in White County AR his home for the rest of his life.

He is listed on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 White Co. AR Census Records.  On the 1880 Census, John, his wife Ella and two sons, Walter and Ira, are living next to his father, David Lanier, step-mother Nancy, sister Mary, and brother Frazier.  Listed on the 1900 Census are John 52, Ella 45, Ira A. 21, Leskie 18, Frazier 16, Hugh 14, Bruce 12, Franklin 10, Fredric 6, Ona K. 4, and Mary E. 1.  On the 1910 Census information recorded indicates that John and Ella had been married 38 years and that they had had 12 children, 10 of whom were living.  On that same Census, John and Ella's eldest child, Walter is living with them with his two sons, Clarence 13 and Sam 9.  Also living with them is Mary Armstrong 55, John's widowed sister.

John was postmaster of Center Hill Post Office, White Co. AR from 5 May 1897 to 14 May 1900.  It is believed that John and Ella were members of Smyrna Methodist Church in Center Hill, AR.  John's exact death date is not known.  He was still living in 1914 when his wife died.  I have listed his death date as "before 1918" based on the fact that his son, Hugh, listed his nearest kin as his sister, Leska, on his World War I draft registration.

Ella was born in Mississippi, but moved to White Co. AR when she was about one year old.  Her father, Thomas Boothe Ellis was one of the early settlers of the county.  He was a successful farmer and business man and was constable of the county shortly after the Civil War.  Ella’s mother died when she was about five years old and her father remarried a year later.

From the "Ellis Scrapbook" which is a collection of newspaper clippings found in the personal effects of Rubie Neelly Ellis by Dorothy Yarnell and published on the White Co. AR Rootsweb Genealogy site is a Memoriam to Ella Ellis Lanier.  It reads as follows:  "Ella Ellis was born in Marshall County, Mississippi, April 24, 1855, was married to John S. Lanier Dec. 4, 1872 at Center Hill, AR, where she lived until God called her home Nov. 17, 1914.  She became a Christian in early life and united with the Methodist Church...She was afflicted of paralysis.  She was patient in her afflictions...Her funeral was conducted in the presence of a large congregation in Smyrna Church Sunday, Oct 18, 1914, and she was laid to rest in the Smyrna Cemetery.  Mrs. Lanier died at her home at Center Hill from the effects of a second stroke of paralysis.  She is survived by her husband and a number of children."

About 1895 when Walter W. was 19, he first married Ella May HART, daughter of Vincent HART (17 Feb 1838-24 Jul 1880) & Sarah Ann Virginia PETTUS (14 May 1841-19 Jun 1888), in White Co. AR. Walter is listed on the 1880 White Co. AR Census with his parents.  He is listed on the 1900 Brazoria Co. TX Census as 28 years old, his wife Ella is 21 years old.  They have been married 5 years and have one child, Clarence who is listed as 3 years old.  He is listed on the 1910 White Co. AR Census with his two sons, Clarence and Samuel, living in the household with his parents.  It is assumed that his first wife had died.  Walter registered for the draft in WWI on September 12, 1918 in Searcy, White Co. AR.  He was listed as 43 years old, living in Searcy, AR.  His occupation was listed as a salesman for Robbins-Sanford Merc, and Co. in Searcy, AR.  His nearest relative was listed as his wife, Chester Lanier.  His physical description was given as tall, stout build, with blue eyes and dark hair.

Walter and his second wife, Chester, are listed on the 1920 and 1930 White Co. AR Census living in Gray Township.  On the 1920 Census Carthal Barkhart, age 15, is shown as Walter's stepson.  On the 1930 census, Carthal, age 25, is shown with the surname of Lanier.  Chester's maiden name is taken from the 1920 White Co. AR Census where the listing shows that Flem Mae Bolton, age 73, is listed as the mother-in-law of Walter.  Also listed are Verna, Carthal, and Caral Barkhart who are shown to be the stepdaughter and stepsons of Walter.

3. Ira Alton LANIER. Born on 10 Mar 1879 in Searcy, White Co AR. Ira Alton died in Milburn, Johnston Co OK on 7 Aug 1916, he was 37. Buried in Bold Springs Cemetery, Milburn, Johnston Co OK. Occupation: Ira was a farmer. On 20 Oct 1901 when Ira Alton was 22, he married Eugenia Grace SKILLERN, daughter of David Alphonso SKILLERN (22 Sep 1859-31 Jul 1939) & Martha Emma HART (13 Apr 1859-11 Mar 1937), in Greenville, Hunt Co TX. Born on 18 Aug 1884 in White Co AR. Eugenia Grace died in Milburn, Johnston Co OK on 11 Dec 1918, she was 34. Buried in Bold Springs Cemetery, Milburn, Johnston Co OK. They had the following children:

16    i. Ardis Fay (1902-1942)

17   ii. Wallace Guy (1908-1988)

18  iii. Haskell (1914-1976)

19   iv. Ella Maudene (1916-2001)

Ira is listed on the 1880 White Co. AR Census Records as age 1, living with his parents and his brother, Walter.  He is listed on the 1900 White Co. AR Census Records as age 21, living with his parents.  Ira left his family in White Co. AR to follow the Skillern family to Texas so he could marry "the love of his life", Grace Skillern, in 1901.  A few years later Ira and Grace with their infant son, Ardis, along with the Skillerns, moved to the Bold Springs community located north of Milburn in the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory.  The area where they settled became Johnston Co. OK after statehood in 1907.  He was a farmer.  He died of a sudden heart attack in 1916.

Grace continued to live on the farm in the Bold Springs community of Johnston Co. OK, located a few miles north of Milburn after the death of her husband with her four children, Ardis who was 14 years old, Guy who was 8 years old, Haskell who was 4 years old, and Ella who was 4 months old.  Two years later she died in the "Great Flu Epidemic of 1918".  Her sister Maude also died from the flu two days later.   Her two youngest children, Haskell and Ella, along her sister, Maude's daughter, Dahlia, went to live with their Grandpa and Grandma Skillern (David and Emma) while Guy who was 10 years old went to live with his uncle Harold Skillern and family.  Ardis, who was then 16 years old, got a job and worked full time, living with his grandparents and contributing to the financial burden of the family.  About four years later,  Harold Skillern moved his family to Pittsburg County, OK, and 14 year old Guy was unhappy living so far from his siblings, so after a short time, he "ran away" and went back to Johnston County to his grandparents home, got a job and became a contributor to the family finances.

4. Nell LANIER. Born  abt 1880 in White Co. AR.  Not much is known about Nell.  Her name does not appear on any of the Census records with her parents.  However, the family of Guy Lanier in Oklahoma has a picture that was sent by Ella to her son Ira in Milburn OK in 1904 of three children.  She wrote on the back of the picture, "Frazier, Nell, and Leska - With Lots of Love - Apr. 5, 1904".  The three children in the picture appear to be teenagers.   Nell is not listed on the 1880 Census, so she was born after that year.  She is not on the 1900 Census, yet she is still alive in 1904, so one must assume that she was married before 1900.  Leska is on the 1900 Census with her parents, listed as born in Aug 1881.  Using this information we can calculate that Nell was probably born in 1880, probably just after the census was taken.
