THE PETTUS FAMILY OF WHITE COUNTY ARKANSAS

Written by Linda Kaye (Cope) Lanier

Tishomingo, OK

The Pettus family of White County Arkansas begins with David Walker Pettus III who moved from Alabama to Center Hill in the early 1850s. He is the son of David Walker Pettus II and Elizabeth Boswell of Madison County, Alabama.

The ancestral family line of David Walker Pettus III has been traced back to the late 1400s in Norwich, Norfolk, England.  The Pettuses were prominent members of the Norwich community where many of them were successful merchants and some served as mayors, sheriffs, and members of Parliament.  Most noted among the family ancestors is Sir John Pettus, Knight of Norwich.

The immigrant ancestor of the American branch of the Pettus family is Captain Thomas Pettus who arrived in Virginia in 1643 from England and received a land grant for 886 acres in James City County, located between Jamestown and Middle Plantation.   Thomas Pettus and his son, David Walker Pettus I, moved to Lunenberg Co. Virginia in 1761.  David Walker Pettus II migrated south to Alabama in the early 1800s.  David Walker Pettus III moved his family farther west to White Co. AR between 1850 and 1860.

The known descendants of David Walker Pettus III and Sarah Coats are as follows:

David and Emma moved from White Co. AR to Hunt Co. OK.   Emma's brother, Jeff Hart, moved to Oklahoma after the death of his wife and his youngest son, Edgar, came with him.  They lived with David and Emma and with David and Emma's daughter , Grace and her husband, Ira Lanier, alternating back and forth between the two families.

David and Emma had eleven children, but six of them died in infancy, unnamed.  Ironically, they ended up raising five of their grandchildren.  Their son-in-law, Ira Lanier, died from a sudden heart attack in 1916 leaving his wife, Grace, to raise their four children.  Then in 1918 the great Flu Epidemic hit the Bold Springs community and Grace died, followed the next day by the death of her sister Maude.  The Skillerns then took on the responsibility of raising Grace's four children and Maude's husband, Richard, and daughter also moved in with David and Emma.  By having Emma take care of his infant daughter, Richard could work and help support the family.

Jeff's youngest son, Edgar, moved to Oklahoma with him, while his oldest son, Henry, stayed in Arkansas, making his home with his Hiram Langford, brother of his deceased mother, for a few years before joining his father and brother in Oklahoma.
