Program Notes -November 23, 2009

The November 23rd meeting of the White County Historical Society will feature Bill Leach who will discuss the history of White County churches. Leach states that the establishing of a church was, in pioneer days, the sign of a community reaching a certain dimension of size and coming together, and so, often predates the establishment of school or post office. Much of the information shared will come from records collected by the Works Progress Administration in 1940, as well as other sources. This meeting will be the 4th Monday, at 7:00 p.m. in the Dining Room of Harding Place, 801 S. Benton St. in Searcy.
This program is in recognition the Walk Through History which will be at Smyrna Church and Cemetery on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. This walk is presented by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program with the WCHS being a co-sponsor. The exterior restoration of Smyrna has been completed thanks to a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage, funded by General Improvement Funds provided by the 86th General Assembly, secured with the assistance of Senator John Paul Capps.
