Anthony Smith

Clay/Dewey, Arkansas

Cloie Presley of the White County Historical Society, whose husband Leister was raised at Clay, reported in a 1963 publication that "Anthony Smith is buried in an unmarked grave on Sharp Hill (between Dewey and Clay). This is the only grave there and is just out of the road ditch."

Thirty-seven years later, another Society member from Clay, Leroy Blair, visited the gravesite and prepared this report: "This cemetery is located at the top of the hill between Clay and Dewey. Going from Clay it is located on the right side of the road at the top of the hill. The report done by Cloie states that it is unmarked. It now has a homemade metal marker with the name Anthony Smith – 1856 – Sept. 7, 1931. It also has a rock ring around it. It is hard to believe it would be possible to dig a grave at this spot as the rocks are barely under the top of the ground. I visited this grave on July 13, 2000. It is the only grave there." Blair, a member of the Historical Society Board of Directors and chairman of the WCHS Committee Committee, returned to the site on December 28, 2004, for a second survey and found no new information to report.
