Blasingame Cemetery

El Paso, Arkansas

The first listing of this cemetery for the White County Historical Society was prepared in 1998 by Jean Hazel, secretary-treasurer of the Blasingame Cemetery Association, and transferred to the Internet by members of the Society in June and September 1999. Jean Hazel provided an update in October 2000. Additional adjustments were made by Historical Society member Leroy Blair after he visited the cemetery with his wife Ellen April 10, 2001, and again annually from published obituaries and updates from Jean Hazel.

Here are Blair’s directions to reach Blasingame Cemetery: "From El Paso take Highway 5 north to El Paso Road. Turn right and go about a mile to Oak Church road, then turn left. The cemetery is on the right side of the road, immediately after turning off Oak Church Road. The cemetery is clean and fenced. Cement blocks are being placed to mark all of all the unmarked graves. I am sure there are still more than 100 unmarked graves." Blair was unable to find the following graves which were on the original list: Margaret T. Blasingame, E.I.B., M.L.B., W.B. Quick, Belle Riley, Odal Tway, Lizzie Van Pelt, and W.J.P.

Being a descendent of the original owner of this land, a present-day resident, and officer of the Association, Jean Hazel provided a reliable history of Blasingame Cemetery:

"There are many, many grave sites that are marked with only a stone. For the most part, they are the oldest graves in the cemetery. There is no way at this time to identify who is buried in these graves.

"The land on which Blasingame Cemetery is located is in the 16th section and land ownership records show the original owner as the State of Arkansas. The first owner after that was a man named Quick. Then in 1895 it was purchased by Thomas Breckenridge, who was my grandfather. He donated the property to the cemetery in 1932.

"There were already graves on the land when granddaddy Breckenridge bought it. According to local legend, the first person buried there was a Blasingame. So, it became known as Blasingame graveyard. A Blasingame did homestead a number of acres in the valley between Cadron Ridge and Bull Mountain. Apparently they chose to bury their dead on property belonging to the state. This may have been the custom in those days. It is my understanding that when the state was divided into sections, that each 16th section was dedicated for a school. At any rate, Thomas Breckenridge deeded land to the cemetery and his son, Clifton Breckenridge, deeded more land later.

"For many years, as with most rural graveyards, family members cared for their own plots and would get together once or twice a year to clean off the whole site. In 1978, the Blasingame Cemetery Association was formed to create an entity to care for the cemetery. Membership fees go into a trust fund. Income from the trust fund and donations are used to pay the cost to hire a caretaker for the cemetery." Jean Hazel died in 2006 and was succeeded as secretary of the Blasingame Cemetery Association by Karen Harrell.  Mrs. Harrell may be contacted at 2847 Highway 5, El Paso, Ar 72045, 501-796-6444

In 1848 a group of five people met at the home of a Mr. Blassingame, who lived about one-half mile north of where the town of El Paso was to be created and organized the El Paso Baptist Church. For several months the five charter members continued to worship in Blassingame’s home. By 1880 the community had flourished "so that it was difficult to find a hitching post for your horse," and the congregation had grown to 206 members, the largest Baptist church in White County. On Sunday, April 18, 1880, the town experienced a tornado of destruction and death that brought El Paso’s period of great progress to a tragic end and impeded growth for many years to come.

If you have corrections or additions to this list, contact the White County Historical Society, P.O. Box 537, Searcy, AR 72145.
