Hammons Chapel Cemetery

Romance, Arkansas

This cemetery includes three acres located in Section 10, Township 6 North, Range 10 West. The first listing was prepared April 19, 1975 by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rowe and Mr. and Mrs. Leister E. Presley of the White County Historical Society, who described the cemetery as being "well kept,"about three-quarters of a mile off Highway 5.

The records were updated November 28, 2000, by Leroy Blair of the Historical Society, who added 20 names to the list. He also reported 54 graves marked only with rocks, five with illegible funeral home markers and "a few" others with no marking at all. Blair also reported that Farrell Cook of Morning Sun, a friend, had told him previously that he had numerous relatives in this cemetery, including an aunt Lottie M. Owens, a brother and two cousins, all who died in infancy.

The property was sold for $1 on January 17, 1914, by trustees of M.E. Church South, W.J. Thomason, Walter Wright and J.R. Blessing, to J.W. Clark, Allen Killough and J.B. Garrett, trustees of the Hammons Chapel Cemetery Association. John Hammons, a trustee of the Association in 1999, said his grandfather donated the land for the cemetery and his father built the original chapel, which served as an early schoolhouse. Mr. Hammons, who was born in 1913, also stated that he has a photograph of his father standing in front of the chapel that he thinks was taken in 1890.

Jacob Allah Hammons, John’s grandfather, was born in Alabama in 1822 and came to Arkansas around 1845. His son Jacob Daniel Hammons, born approximately 1845, built the Hammons Chapel around 1880 and taught school there until 1890.

John Hammons and his wife Susan lived at 271 Hammons Chapel Road, Romance, AR 72136, about a mile north of Highway 5 from Crossroads at Hammonsville.
