I visited this cemetery with my wife Ellen on October 19, 2001. This cemetery had never before been listed by the White County Historical Society. It is located in Jackson County, just across the White County line. To reach the cemetery from Bradford, take Highway 367 north toward Newport. Go about two miles to Jackson County Road 8. Turn left and go eight-tenths of a mile; then turn right on an unmarked road. The cemetery is three-tenths of a mile down this road, on the right.
Hickmon Cemetery is divided into two sections. The new section is the first part you will come to. The old section is about 100 yards past the new section. The old section has an old fence around it. There is a sign between the two sections that has on it, “Hickmon Cemetery. Since 1852.” The new section is well cared for, but the old section was in very bad need of mowing. There was a large oak tree that had been cut down and not removed. I do not know if there are graves under the tree limbs or not. I could not see any. I counted 43 graves marked with rocks with no writing on them. I also found 6 illegible funeral home markers.
The new section listings are indicated in parenthesis as - (N) and the old section listings are shown as (O). DS denotes double stone.
