Howell Cemetery

Clay, Arkansas

Clay was a very important community in the early history of White County.  In 1831, President Jackson opened the National Highway or Military Road and took advantage of the Britton Ferry for the Little Red River crossing and put the Clay area on the main road through central Arkansas.   The early inhabitants of Clay, according to an article published by the White County Historical Society in 1991, “put their hand and shoulder to any job necessary for their living and to aid their neighbors in their survival.  It was their interest in their spiritual welfare and the education of their children that has set this community apart and where they have made their greatest contribution.”  It is documented that the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was meeting in 1861, and that the membership was made up of the Howell family and their friends.  So it is likely that they had formed their church soon after their arrival at Clay.  The first building was at the Howell Cemetery and it was many years before it was moved to a nearby location, and it has continued active.

James S. Howell and several of his married children settled here in 1849 or 1850, the Historical Society reports, and became builders of the community in both numbers and accomplishments. James’ daughter Winnie had married her first cousin, James J. Howell, and they came with the group from Warren County, Kentucky.  Their infant, born about 1858, was the first person buried in the Howell Cemetery.  The second was Abram Shelby, who died December 1, 1858.  Shelby was the father of Mrs. Dudley T. Howell and reportedly a first cousin of Martin Van Buren, eighth President of the United States.

The original Howell Cemetery listing was prepared by Cloie and Leister Presley of the White County Historical Society February 17, 1962, and published in the 1964 edition of White County Heritage.   The Howell Cemetery Association updated the records in July 1998, noting,  "We have compiled a list of all known burials and headstone markings which amount to 289. We know of perhaps 150 to 250 graves either unmarked or else marked only by field stones…”  Leroy Blair of the Historical Society, a resident of Clay, visited the cemetery July 13, 2000, and October 22, 2000, and provided additional information-including 10 names that were previously not listed.  He also found two stones that had recently been placed at the cemetery, reading as follows:  “First burial in cemetery-1858- infant child of James J. and Winnie Howell.  Donated by Ida Watkins Ferguson” and “Second burial in cemetery-December 1, 1858-Abram Shelby, father of Mrs. Dudley T. Howell and first cousin of Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States.  Donated by Ida Watkins Ferguson.”  Blair was unable to find 39 graves that were on the original list.  He returned to the cemetery in December 2004 and personally inspected the information on each tombstone and compared it with the list below, updating and adjusting the burial list.  By this time, Blair was a member of the board of directors of the Historical Society, chairman of its cemetery committee, and  Volunteer of the Year who had surveyed every known graveyard in the county.

Association secretary Naomi Townsend explained in the 1998 update that those who are known to be buried in the cemetery but without markers are indicated on the list as - (UK), meaning their precise location is unknown.  At least two names are listed as being buried elsewhere.  These are probably relatives of those in the cemetery, Mrs. Townsend explained, and it was desired that their final resting places be recorded somewhere-thus they are in the Howell listing.  Mrs. Townsend updated the list annually from 2002 to 2005.  The cemetery has now been laid out by Lots and Rows - (indicated within parenthesis in the listings).   Also, Mrs. Townsend noted that Clay Road from Highway 305 to the Howell Cemetery has been paved, “due to the hard work of a lot of people and the County Judge [Bob Parish].”  Mrs. Townsend may be contacted at 148 Dewey Road, Pangburn, AR 72121.  Donations for the upkeep of the cemetery may be mailed to the association at Howell Cemetery c/o Randy Norman, P.O. 267, Pangburn, AR 72121
