This cemetery is located on Highway 157 north from Judsonia. It was first listed in 1968 by the Providence Extension Homemakers Club and published that year by the White County Historical Society in its annual White County Heritage. In that list the gravesites were numbered and not alphabetical as they are here. The Homemakers described the cemetery as "well kept" and beside the Providence Church.
Providence Cemetery's records were updated by Historical Society member Leroy Blair after he visited the site several times in November 2000. He added 617 names and other new information to the list. Some are new graves, others graves with new stones. He found 122 graves that were marked only with rocks, 37 with funeral home markers that were no longer legible, 7 marked only with metal stakes or pipes, and 4 depressions that were not marked at all. He also found that 11 names on the original list were actually burials at the Owens/ Henson Cemetery about a half/ mile from Providence Cemetery. Subsequent additions have been made to this list by the Historical Society based on published obituaries.

This is Providence School probably in the 1920s.
Providence Owes Much To Its Early Settlers

This short feature story was discovered in a copy of the White County Record for this date. The material, according to the original text, was gathered and written by students and faculty members of Providence School of that year.
The history of Providence dates back to 1832, when Uncle Elijah Little came from Tennessee for the purpose of establishing a home in Arkansas. Liking the location, he purchased a tract of land that included practically all of what is now Providence.
After the Civil War the land was sold bit by bit until less than a hundred acres remain of the original tract. "Uncle Lige," as he was known, had several sons, and one of these, George W. Little, was for years one of the outstanding citizens of the community.
Among those first settlers were the Robbins, and well known were Uncle Than and Aunt Jennie Robbins, who lived in the same place from the time they were married until their death. Then there came Uncle Joe and Jason Robbins, brothers of Uncle Than, and Lee Robbins, who, although no relation, was also an old settler. The place settled by Bill Watkins still bears his name, as do the "Old Gordon Places," settled by Wright and Booker Gordon.
The names of Dr. Harrington and Uncle Arter Stephenson are only a memory to our citizens, but the land they cleared still bears mute evidence of their labor. Mr. Will House and Mr. Philip House will be remembered for years to come, also Uncle Dave James, Uncle Jack McDaniel and John Humphries.
Others who deserve credit for progress of the community were: John Brunson, Sam Brown, Sam Womack, Jack Thompson, Lester Humpries, Cal Moore, Louise Hilger, Noah Hilger, Jake Smith, Oscar and Art Hooper, John Scantlin, John O'Brien, Will Hearn, Jim Hearn, Grandpa Leasure, Will Leasure, George Ferren and Uncle Jim Cox. There are some, perhaps, whom we have failed to mention.
Some of these good people moved away, many of them have gone to their reward and some of them are still alive in the community. Most of them have descendents who are trying to take their place, and work for the upbuilding of this section of the county.
All through the years a great interest has been manifested in the church and school. Recently our church building was remodeled and reconstructed. Our school building is proving inadequate, and we are looking forward to a new building with all necessary equipment, one that we can point to as "ours."
Searcy/ Batesville Road proved providential for Providence

The White County community of Providence lies in fertile farm country about 10 miles north of Searcy on Arkansas 157, the old Searcy/ Batesville Road.
Providence likely owes its birth to the building of that road. It was built in the 1830s, said Paul E. Miller, past president of the White County Historical Society and retired principal of White County Central School. The road was widely traveled in Arkansas' early years. It became the primary artery for those migrating to northeastern Texas. The Old Southwest Trail/Military Road was not convenient to the larger towns, so the Searcy/ Batesville Road was built to route traffic through Searcy and on toward Little Rock.
A short feature written by Providence schoolchildren and printed in the White County Record in 1938 says the community grew from Elijah Little's farm. In fact, Little was in charge of the Providence Post Office. His farm was established in 1832 when he moved from Tennessee.
Miller noted in a recent telephone conversation that Little was a slaveholder and the old Providence cemetery was originally begun as a burial place for Little's slaves. It was later enlarged to accommodate families of white settlers as the area grew. The log cabin now on the grounds of the White County Fair Pioneer Village exhibit was moved there from Providence, Miller said.
The area was cultivated in cotton fields before the Civil War. During the war, the area saw some skirmishes, and food and supplies were foraged there by German immigrant Union Army troops stationed near Batesville. Much of the farming there in the late 19th and early 20th century was food crops, most notably Arkansas strawberries. Now the Providence area, still mostly farmland, relies on poultry and cattle for its primary products.
Much of the activity in Providence revolves around White County Central School just south of the community's center. There were schools about every two or three miles in the area early in the 20th century since most of the students had to walk to school. In the late 1920's and early '30s the Plainview and Providence schools consolidated many nearby rural schools into their districts.

In the 1946/ 47 school year Providence and Plainview schools began the consolidation process to form White County Central School, which celebrated its 50th year September 6, 1999.
According to Principal Jerry Lacy, North/ Central accredited White County Central School has continued to grow, adding new AP English and chemistry classes and more new computers this year. The school is proud that one of its students, Lisa Lamb, was named eighth in the United States in public speaking this year by the Future Business Leaders of America. Continuing in the agricultural tradition of the area, the school's agriculture teacher, Robert Reedy, recently received a grant to build a computerized greenhouse for the school.
Sports has been a unifying factor for the community of Providence and the school. The White County basketball tournament was held at the school in December.
Providence's location near many larger towns has enables many descendents of early settlers to remain there to work on family farms and allowed others to work at the consolidated school and in the nearby towns of White and Independence counties.
