May 20&22 Are Special Days

M

ay is Heritage Month in Arkansas, a celebration of the many expressions of the arts - visual, literary and performing - that can be found in White County and throughout the state.  The White County Historical Society encourages you to "support the arts" in our area this month with your attendance and involvement.  The White County celebration is already under way.  It began April 24 when flute-maker Paul Pitt of Harding University was guest speaker at the regular monthly meeting of the Historical Society.  Several events are planned this month for Searcy, including a month-long exhibit at the Searcy Arts Gallery featuring the late songwriter Luther G. Presley.  The exhibit will also include memorabilia from Singing Schools, quartets and musical instruments of the 1940s and '50s.  Searcy Arts Council chose the theme "Music - A Window of Our Heritage" and was awarded a grant to conduct several events, partnering with the White County Historical Society, Main Street Searcy and Searcy Parks and Recreation.   On May 20, a day of events will include a walking tour of downtown Searcy to view the architectural details of buildings on the National Register.  Along the way, characters will speak to the tour group about events that happened or persons that occupied particular buildings.  This event is being sponsored by the Historical Society.  In the late afternoon Main Street Searcy will host a game time for children on the downtown sidewalks.  Children will play old-time games that have musical rhymes and sidewalk chalk will be provided for art creation.  Musical groups will highlight the evening events.  A dulcimer group, a band performing in Citizen Park, a quartet singing at the Black House, and other selected musical performances will be held in the downtown area. The Historical Society's meeting on May 22 at Harding Place will begin with a presentation of annual WCHS awards, followed by a program on historic 1840 Weir Cemetery.  The meeting will start at 7.
