DEPOT PROGRAM, TOUR OF BALD KNOB PLANNED

The preservation of the 90-year-old Bald Knob railroad depot will be subject of the September 26 program of the White County Historical Society.   A guided tour of Bald Knob is scheduled for two weeks later.

Guest speaker at the meeting will be Craig Christiansen of Velvet Ridge, proprietor of a hobby shop that is now located in the depot.   The 1915 structure was restored with a federal grant and opened to the public about a year ago.  Model train displays and antiques have attracted many visitors to the building, which is located at the junction of two Union Pacific Railroad lines.

Christiansen, a former transportation investigator for the state, will discuss the railroad history of the region as well as the history of the old depot.  The meeting will be conducted at 7 p.m. in the dining hall at Harding Place in  Searcy and is open to the public.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and White County Historical Society will conduct a “Walk Through History” of downtown Bald Knob on Saturday, October 8, beginning at 11 a.m.    AHPP executive Zac Cothren of Little Rock will serve as guide for the tour, which will begin at parking lot next to Citizens Bank at the corner of Elm and old Highway 64-67.   In the monthly "Walks Through History" program, AHPP historians provide free guided walking tours of historic structures and districts across Arkansas.   For additional information, Cothren may be contacted at 501 324-9788.
