Searcy Cotton Fields c1905 (two views). These two pictures indicate the very rank growth that cotton attained on the fertile new lands in the vicinity of Searcy. Note in the bottom picture the trunks of dead trees still standing in the field. Since all the work was done with horse- or mule-drawn equipment, most of it drawn by one animal, the presence of trees posed no particular problem. Now that we depend on tractor power almost wholly, the presence of such handicaps could not be tolerated. Courtesy Ivan Quattlebaum, White County Historical Society.
