GREENBRIER

Died, February 10, of pneumonia, three miles east of here, Samuel D. Earnhart. He was buried by the W.O.W., Camp No. 243. This was the first member this camp has lost since its organization nearly five years ago.

OLD CITIZEN DIED

M.B. Edmonson died in North Little Rock at 6 o'clock Wednesday morning, December 30. He was 62 years and 6 months old. He was born in Virginia and came to Arkansas when he was 11 years of age and settled three miles east of Conway, where he lived until three years ago, when he moved to Little Rock. A wife, four daughters, and one son survived him. The remains were shipped to Conway on the morning train December 31, and burial in the family cemetery, eight miles east of Conway, at New Liberty.

MRS. T.T. EDWARDS

Mrs. Mattie B. Edwards of 314 Oakwood Place died Wednesday (January 14, 1981) at Conway Memorial Hospital. She would have been 100 years old Friday.

Mrs. Edwards was born January 16, 1881, at El Paso (White Co.), a daughter of Milton A. and Mary Hathaway Brown. She was the widow of Thomas T. Brown [corr: Edwards] and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church at Greenbrier.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Kirby, Mrs. Vivian Mode, and Mrs. Lyda Payne, all of Conway, and Mrs. Opal Lieblong of Greenbrier; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McNutt Chapel with burial in Thorn Cemetery at Greenbrier. Pallbearers will be Bill Starkey, Sam D. Lieblong, Don Kelso, Edward Kirby, and Elvin Hooten.

MRS. ELLZEY DEAD

Mrs. J.A. Ellzey died of dropsy at her home near Spring Hill Church yesterday afternoon, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband and several children, one of whom, Mrs. J.J. Nixon, lives in this city. The funeral is being held today.

MRS. CLINT ELLZEY, LONGTIME RESIDENT OF SPRING HILL, DIES

Mrs. Arlie May Ellzey, widow of Clint Ellzey, died yesterday at the home of a son, Clint Ellzey, at Spring Hill. She was 70. Mrs. Ellzey had been ill the past two months.

A native of Greenbrier, she had lived at Spring Hill all her life. She was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, where the funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. today by the Rev. J.E. Cobb and the Rev. Wassel Burgess. Burail was at Spring Hill Cemetery by Doolin Funeral Home.

Survivors include another son, William A. Ellzey of Dexter, Mo.; five daughters, Mrs. G.O. Loveless of Jonesboro, Mrs. H.V. Wilcox of Deming, N.M., Mrs. J.W. Clifton, Mrs. Byron Nixon, and Mrs. Clark Reynolds of Spring Hill; a brother, E.A. Tilley; and five sisters, Mrs. J.O. Nixon, Mrs. Jim Rhea, Mrs. Guy Townsend, Mrs. Dan Carter, and Miss Willie Tilley, all of Spring Hill; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were Pierce Nixon, Hugh Nixon, Cecil Carter, Tommy Carter, Bob Wilcox, and Rudolph Tilley. Honorary pallbearers were A.M. Ledbetter, J.I. Summers, Cecil Bell, Wayne Nixon, Charlie Robinson, John Brannon, Tom Wofford, Tollie F. Ford, and Dr. Keller Lieblong.

C.F. ELLZEY

A telegram was received here Monday by relatives announcing the death of C.F. Ellzey, 53, Sunday at Hines, Ill. Mr. Ellzey, who was unmarried, is survived by four sisters, Mrs. J.J. Nixon, Mrs. Tom E. Wilson, Mrs. B.M. Tilley of Conway, and Mrs. F.B. Edington of Dumas; and one brother, Clint Ellzey of Linder. The body is expected to arrive tonight and the funeral will be held and burial made in Linder. Mr. Ellzey was born at Summitt, Miss., in 1878, and care (came) with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Ellzey, when a child, to Linder, where he resided until a few years ago.

MRS. JOHN T. ERWIN

Mrs. Josephine Scott Erwin, 84, of Crossett (Ashley County), sister of Lester Scott and Mrs. Guyla Moore, both of Vilonia, and widow of John T. Erwin, died Tuesday (December 10, 1985).

She was a member of the Crossett Cemetery Board, a member of the Board of Governors of the Crossett Health Center, and a Methodist.

Funeral services were today at First United Methodist Church at Crossett. Burial was in Pinewood Memorial Park Cemetery by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.

B.C. ETHRIDGE, SR.

Bernard Charles Ethridge, Sr., 70, of Rt. 1, Conway, died Friday (March 30, 1979) at Conway Memorial Hospital. He was retired carpenter.

Mr. Ethridge was born January 09, 1909, at Atkins, a son of Charles and Dulcie Pratt Ethridge. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Daisy Green Ethridge; a son, Bernard Charles Ethridge, Jr., of Greenbrier; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Elwanda Baker of Conway and Mrs. Doris Detter of Arlington, Va; four brothers, Milford Ethridge of Greenbrier, Kenneth Ethridge of Bee Branch, Dee Ethridge of Oregan, and Norman Ethridge of New Mex.; a sister, Mrs. Hildred Grooms of Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at McNutt Chapel with the Rev. Billy Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Harrell, Jim White, Bob Trent, John Brady, Alfred Edwards, and Joe White.

B.H. ETHRIDGE, WHO LIVED AT WOOSTER 70 YEARS, DIES

Billy Henry Ethridge, aged 77, a resident of the Wooster community 70 years, died at Memorial Hospital last night. Mr. Ethridge's death resulted from a heart ailment. He had been ill five days.

A native Arkansas, Mr. Ethridge was a farmer. He married the former Mattie A. Wofford, who survives, in 1897. He was born May 22, 1873. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Also surviving are three sons, W. Cecil, A.B., and Wade M. Ethridge of Conway; four brothers, W.A. and Ed Ethridge of Wooster, B.B. Ethridge of Troupe, Tex., J.E. Ethridge of Wooster; three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Thornton of Kerns, Tex., Mrs. Barbara Higgs of San Angelo, Tex., and Mrs. Ollie Castleberry of Hazen; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Fuenral services will be held at Bethlehem Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday by Elder B.G. Hogan and burial will be in by McNutt Funeral Home. Pallbearers will include Herman Kellar, Jess Hicks Wilson, Neal Floyd, Billy and Tommie Ethridge, and Bill Holloway.

WADE ETHERIDGE, FORMER ALDERMAN, DIES AT AGE 66

Wade M. Etheridge, 66, of 1010 Watkins Street, died Tuesday (January 26, 1982) at Conway Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Etheridge was a former Conway Ward 3 alderman. He was appointed in 1963 to fill the unexpired term of Coleman Gordan. He subsequently was elected to the council and served through 1970.

In 1963 he retired as assistant fire chief at Little Rock Air Force Base.

He was a Baptist, a member of the Green Grove Masonic Lodge No. 107 and a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

A World War II army veteran, he served in the Third Infantry Division with over 600 days of actual combat time.

Born October 27, 1915, at Greenbrier, he was a son of Billy Henry and Mattie Ann Wofford Etheridge. On December 20, 1947, he married the former Anita Opitz who survives.

Also surviving is a son, Jerry Keller Etheridge of Conway. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at McNutt Chapel with the Rev. Wassell Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Bill Ledbetter, Jim Shirley, Jerry Williams, Neil and Curt Floyd, John David Opitz, and Bill and Jim Hardin.

The family will be at McNutt Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight.

BURL ETHRIDGE, 56, DIES AFTER ATTACK

Amon Burl Ethridge, 56, of 1923 Scott Street, died at Memorial Hospital early Sunday (April 15, 1962) following a heart attack. He was a heavy equipment operator.

Mr Ethridge suffered an attack several weeks ago and was hospitalized for sometime. He suffered another severe attach yesterday at his home and died at 7:10 a.m.

He was a native of Greenbrier, a son of the late Billy Henry and Mattie Ann Wofford Ethridge, and was born November 05, 1905.

He was married to the former Mildred Loveless, who survives, occurred in February 04, 1928.

Also surviving are a son, Billy M. Ethridge of Blytheville Air Force Base; a daughter, Mrs. Neil S. Floyd of Conway; a brother, Wade Ethridge of Conway; and four grandchildren.

Funeral was held at McNutt Chapel this afternoon by the Rev. James H. Street of Little Rock and burial was in Crestlawn Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers were Gene Wafford, Hicks Wilson, Faber Watson, Troy Kerby, Jake Sims, and Lloyd Sellers. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. Audie J. Lynch, A.T. Funeral for W.C. (Cecil) Ethridge, aged 58, whose death occurred here Saturday, was conducted by McNutt Chapel this morning by B.G. Hogan. Burial was at Crestlawn Memorial Park.

W.R. "Russ" ETHRIDGE

W.R. "Russ" Ethridge, 76, of Conway, died Monday (March 15, 1993).

Born August 25, 1916, in Conway, a son of the late Hinkle W. and Myrtle Naylor Ethridge, he was a retired salesman with Bean Music Co. in Little Rock.

Surviving are his wife, Betsy Ethridge; two daughters, Martha Ethridge of Conway and Betty Graham of Williamsburg, VA; a sister, Mildred Ford of North Little Rock; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip Hathcock and Dr. Robert Crossman officiating. The body will be cremated. Arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Conway building fund.

A.B. Ethridge, Jr., four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. B.A. Ethridge, died at their home in the Shady Grove community, ten miles northeast of Conway, late night at 7 o'clock. The child was born August 26, 1933. He is survived by his parents, a brother, Billy Mason Ethridge, and a sister, Mary Ethridge. Funeral services in charge of Rev. W.J. Burgess were conducted this afternoon at the Bethelhem Cemetery in charge of J.A. Pence & Son. Pallbearers were as follows: Royce and Hayden Loveless, Wade Ethridge and Hubert Wofford.

MRS. ETHRIDGE DIES AFTER OPERATION:

WIFE OF HERMAN ETHRIDGE OF NORTH LITTLE ROCK SUCCUMBS AT HOSPITAL

Mrs. Vera Crocker Ethridge, 47, wife of Herman Ethridge of North Little Rock, formerly of Conway, died at St. Vincent's Infirmary in Little Rock early today. Mrs. Ethridge's death came following an operation. She had been ill two weeks.

Mrs. Ethridge was born at Mulberry March 25, 1895, and had lived in this state all her life. She was married to Mr. Ethridge March 23, 1940. She was a Methodist and a member of the First Church of Fort Smith.

Survivors also include her father, Dr. J.R. Crocker of Haskell, Okla.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Harry L. Beazley of Conway; a grand-daughter, Virginia Lee Beazley of Conway; two brothers, J.R. Crocker of Texarkana, and Smither Crocker of Ozark; and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Hunter of Haskell, Okla., and Mrs. Ruby Hargrove of LeVerne, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday by Rev. Edward W. Harris and Dr. Blake Smith. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in charge of McNutt Funeral Home.

MRS. ETHRIDGE DIES AT HOME

Mrs. Sarah Myrtle Ethridge, 77, of 1627 Duncan Street, died at her home Tuesday (March 07, 1972). She was the widow of Hinkle W. Ethridge.

Mrs. Ethridge, a native of Mayflower, was born June 22, 1894, a daughter of R.H. and Alyda Herring Naylor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conway.

Survivors include a son, Russ Ethridge of Conway; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Mildred) Ford of North Little Rock; a sister, Mrs. Robbie Page of Conway; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McNutt Chapel with the Rev. Ben F. Jordan and the Rev. W.H. Probasco officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Edgmon, Maurice Graham, James Gibbons, Brooks Beazley, Paul Henley, and James H. Brewer.

JAMES FLOWERS

James Flowers, former resident of Conway, died in the army hospital at San Francisco, Calif., last Friday. He was a world war veteran. Mr. Flowers is survived by his widow; nine children, Merlene, Loyce, Millie, Dora, Jerry, Priscilla, Jane, Billy, and Forrest Flowers of San Francisco; his mother, Mrs. Annie Flowers of Conway; and three brothers, Cy of Mount Vernon, and Joe and Tavener Flowers of Conway. Burial was at San Francisco.

RALPH H. FLOWERS, JR.

Ralph H. Flowers, Jr., 29, of Conway died Sunday (Sept. 1, 1996) at Conway Regional Medical Center.

Born on May 31, 1967, in Clovis, N.M., son of Ralph H. and Jeri Flowers of Conway. He was a Baptist.

Others survivors include a sister, Renee McMillen of Conway.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Roller-McNutt Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Hogan officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

JOHN E. FUGATT DIES AT 87 IN LITTLE ROCK

John E. Fugatt, 82, of 2901 Delwood Street, Little Rock, died Saturday (December 07, 1974) at St. Vincent Infirmary. He was a retired farmer.

Mr. Fugatt was born March 17, 1892, in Alabama. His parents were John and Sallie Fugatt. He formerly lived at Vilonia.

He was a member of Beryl Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are two sons, Merlin Fugatt of North Little Rock and Russell Fugatt of Conway; three daughters, Mrs. Heber (Valree) Avra of Conway, Mrs. Ann Bradley of Little Rock, and Mrs. Eugene Jackson of North Little Rock; a brothers, Bob Fugatt of Conway; a sister, Mrs Bess Cavin of Alabama; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held today at Beryl Baptist Church by the Rev. Ed Walker. Burial was at Beryl Cemetery by McNutt Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Howard Johnson, James Johnson, Jim Fugatt, Royce Fugatt, Robert Fugatt, and Glenn Avra.

MRS. SARAH ALICE FUGATT

Mrs. Sarah Alice Fugatt, 76, widow of John Fugatt, died at the home of a son, Robert O. Fugatt, in the Pickles Gap community, five miles northeast of Conway, Saturday night. A native of Alabama, she came to Arkansas in 1907. She is survived also by three other sons, W.B. and J.R. of near Conway, and J.E. Fugatt of Vilonia; two daughters Mrs. Bessie Cavin of Chesterfield, Ala., and Mrs. Mae Dunn of Conway; and six brothers, C.N. Crow of Morrilton, M.C. of Conway, R.R. of Wooster, Louis of Los Angeles, Calif., Charles of Georgia, and Sam Crow of Fort Payne, Alabama. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Cemetery in charge of J.A. Pence & Son.

Active pall bearers were as follows: Clyde Fugatt, Carl Fugatt, Leo Fugatt, Murline Fugatt, Russell Fugatt, Odus Fugatt, Everett Crow, Coy Crow, and Kermit Dunn.

THURSTON FULMER, 75, DIES SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME SUNDAY

Thurston Fulmer, citizen of Faulkner County for 73 of his 75 years, died suddenly at his home in Graham Chapel community, six miles east of Conway, Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock. He has been in failing health for several years but his death was unexpected. Mr. Fulmer was born in Holly Springs, Miss., April 02, 1865, and came with parents to Ark. at the age of three.

The remainder of his life was spent in Faulkner County, principally in Conway, where he served about 15 years as custodian fo buildings and grounds at Hendrix College. For the past several years he has engaged in farming and dairying.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Elton and Kelsey Fulmer of Conway, and Harmon Fulmer of Heber Springs; a daughter, Mrs. Joe Freyaldenhoven of Benton, Ark.; and a sister, Mrs. W.L. Robins of Conway.

Funeral services will be held at Graham Chapel Methodist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. by Dr. C.J. Greene, assisted by Rev. H.M. Lewis, pastor of the church. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, in charge of J.A. Pence and Son.

MRS. THURSTON FULMER, LIFELONG RESIDENT OF FAULKNER COUNTY, DIES

Mrs. Lillian Ansley Fulmer of Conway, aged 75, widow of Thurston Fulmer, native and lifelong resident of Faulkner County, died at 2 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Hospital, following an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Fulmer was born June 02, 1871, a daughter of the late Sam and Amanda Shaw Kelsey. She was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Rebekah Lodge. Surviving her are two sons, Harmon Fulmer of Pocahontas and T.Kelsey Fulmer of Conway; a daughter, Mrs. Joe Freyaldenhoven of Benton, Ark.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of the Pence Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday by Rev. W.P. Whaley, assisted by Rev. J. Russell Cross, and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pall-bearers will be as follows: Active--L.A. Smith, Bob Stapleton, Mark Huckabee, Willie Stacks, Sam Long, and Ed Middleton; Honorary--F.B. Johnson, Clyde Anderson, Wilber Dobbyns, Dr. Charles A. The body will be removed to the family home, 1935 Caldwell Street, this afternoon, and remain there until a short time before funeral services tomorrow. Mrs. Fulmer made her home with Mrs. C.C. Thomason.

RETIRED ENOLA FARMER SUCCUMBS

Christopher Columbus Garland, 76, a retired Enola farmer, died today (December 16, 1961) at Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Garland was a native of Enola.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Garland; three sons, Rayburn Garland of Lindsey, Calif., and Ragie and Kenneth Garland, both of Enola; three daughters, Mrs. Jewel McCracken of Conway, Mrs. Theo Henry of Azle, Tex., and Mrs. Donald Williams of Abilene, Tex.; a brother, Fred Garland of Visalia, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Spradlin , Mrs. Martha Reynolds, and Mrs. Lipkie, all of Little Rock; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by McNutt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Norbie Mae Garland, 76, of Route 4, Conway, widow of Rayburn Garland, died Friday (September 18, 1987).

Born May 12, 1911, in the Barney community, she was a daughter of Pryor and Lurad Blessing Mitchell. She was a housewife and a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are two sons, Billy and Junior Garland, both of Lindsay, Calif; a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Bullock of Pasadena, Tex.; four brothers, Clyde Mitchell of Conway, Emery Mitchell of Murfreesboro, Hayden Mitchell of Maple Heights, Ohio, and Neal Mitchell of Petersburg, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Nell Hightower of Greenbrier; and four grandchildren.

James Russell Garland, 65, died today (October 27, 1980) at Conway Memorial Hospital. He was a retired auto body worker and cattleman.

Mr. Garland was born October 09, 1915, at Mount Vernon, a son of Fred and Martha Keathley Garland. He was a Baptist. In 1941, he married the former Charlsie Parks, who survives.

Other survivors are two sisters, Peggy Sherman of Bakersfield, Calif., and Loy Snow of Rego Park, NY.

JAMES R. GENTRY, 64, BROTHER OF COUNTY CLERK, DIED AT GUY

James Randolph Gentry, aged 64, brother of County Clerk C.E. Gentry, died at his home at Guy at 11:40 o'clock last night. Mr. Gentry's death was from an attack of pneumonia he contracted three weeks ago.

He was born at Guy December 28, 1874, and lived there all his life. He was a farmer.

Mr. Gentry was married July 06, 1906, to Miss Ardell Glover, who, with a son, Dermon R. Gentry, and two daughters, Mrs. D.E. Butler of Guy and Mrs. Johnnie Covert of Cincinnati, O., survive. Other survivors include two brothers, W.H. Gentry and Carl E. Gentry of Conway, and two sisters, Miss Norah Gentry and Mrs. Oma Kessinger of Conway.

Mr. Gentry held membership in the Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be held at Guy tomorrow at 1 p.m. in charge of Elder W.M. Harper. Burial will be in Copperas Springs Cemetery in charge of Doolin's Funeral Home.

MRS. GIBBONS, RESIDENT HERE SINCE 1907, DIES

Mrs. Mary E. Gibbons, one of Conway's oldest residents, died today (December 21, 1965) at the Richardson Rest Home. She was 97.

Mrs. Gibbons was the widow of W.A. Gibbons, a former Conway merchant, who died in 1938.

Mrs. Gibbons was born in Fairfield, Tex., September 18, 1868, a daughter of Mary Cherry Wylie and Daniel Cook Wylie. Her father was a lieutenant in the Confederate Army. In infancy she moved with her parents to Arlington, Tenn., where she was educated and married. Her marriage to Mr. Gibbon occurred December 02, 1886. The couple with their children moved to Conway in 1907.

Mrs. Gibbons was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Conway.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. D.O. Harton, Jr., of Conway and Mrs. E.E. Long of Pueblo, Colo.; ten grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Pence Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church.

James Gidley, 70, of Rt. 2, Vilonia, died Thursday (Nov 04, 1971) at Memorial Hospital after an illness of several weeks. He was a farmer.

Mr. Gidley was born November 15, 1900, in Kansas, and lived in Vilonia since 1927.

He was married October 25, 1935, to the former Ruth Mildred Paty, and she survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Margie Lewelling of Vilonia; a brother, George Gidley of McAlester, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Fisher and Mrs. Florence McMillen, both of Kansas; and one grandchild.

Eli Jasper "E. J." Glover, 80, of Conway, died Friday (May 5, 2000) at Conway Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 19, 1919, in Guy, he was a son of Steve Glover and Edna Fielder Glover. The widower of Bronnie Henderson, he was a self-employed carpenter, a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, and a Baptist.

Survivors include a brother, J. W. "Dub" Glover of Bee Branch; and three sisters, Haligene Ellzey and Theda Maulden, both of Greenbrier, and Freda Wiedower of Conway.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today at Copperas Springs Cemetery with the Rev. Ed Stephenson officiating. Arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home.

James Witt Gould, 60, of Fort Smith, a former Missouri Pacific employee at Conway, died Saturday at a hospital in Little Rock

Mr. Gould was a cousin of Mrs. Cyril C. Morris and Miss Sarah Freeman of this city.

His wife, who survives, is the former Aubrey Ellzey of Greenbrier.

Mr. Gould was a resident of Fort Smith the past 25 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks and served as rate clerk for Missouri Pacific for 40 years.

Also surviving is a son, Bill Gould of Fayetteville.

Funeral services were conducted at theAR Drummond Funeral Chapel in Little Rock this afternoon with Dr. W.O. Vaught officiating. The body was brought to Oak Grove Cemetery here for burial.

Mrs. Josie Green, aged 78, widow of William Green, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Paule Hart, in Jacksonville, Tuesday. Mrs. Green was a former resident of Greenbrier.

She was born in Alabama, March 15, 1873, and lived in Arkansas 60 years. She lived in Greenbrier before going to Jacksonville in 1946.

Mrs. Green was a Baptist.

JOE E. GREEN SUCCUMBS AT HOSPITAL HERE

Injuries sustained early yesterday morning when struck by a truck near his home, Joe E. Green, aged 82, well known Faulkner County farmer, died at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Faulkner County Hospital.

Mr. Green suffered lacerations about the head and hands. The shock was said to have been a contributing cause of his death. He did not sustain any broken bones, hospital attendants said.

The truck striking the aged man was driven by Charley Brewer, negro, living near Menifee. Brewer told Sheriff J.I. Summers, the latter said, that Mr. Green walked from behind another car in front of his truck. After striking the man the truck ran into an embankment and overturned with a load of seed cotton.

Sheriff Summers say today no charges have been preferred against Brewer.

The accident occurred in front of Mr. Green's home on Highway 65, about four miles west of Conway, where he had lived more than 60 years.

Mr. Green was born in Michigan, December 16, 1854, and came to this county in early life. He was famous throughout Faulkner and adjoining counties as a deer hunter and for many years maintained a large pack of trained deer hounds. Nearing his eighty-second birthday, he went on his last deer hunt during the last open season.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Green, to whom he was married more than 60 years ago; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Lewis of Decatur, Alabama; two brothers, M.G. Green of Heber Springs and Ludie Green of Texas; and two foster sons, Tom Green of Perry, Ark., and John Anderson of a CCC camp near Berryville, Ark.

Funeral services in charge of Dr. Otto Whitington and Dr. E.P.J. Garrott will be conducted at the family home tomorrow at 1 p.m. and interment made in Macedonia Cemetery in charge of Doolin's Funeral Home.

Joseph Byron Griffith, 79, of 620 First St., died today at Memorial Hospital of a heart and kidney disorder after an illness of two weeks.

He was a retired farmer and a native of the Saltillo community. He had lived in Conway 30 years and recently celebrated his 56th wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Robert L. Hargrove, aged 78, retired contractor and farmer of the Bono community and citizen of Faulkner County for 50 years, died at his home at 3 a.m. today. Mr. Hargrove was born in Franklin, Tenn., October 18, 1866, and came to Faulkner County in 1894.

MRS. HARROD, 74, DOCTOR'S WIDOW, SUCCUMBS AT HOME

Mrs. Nora Ethel Harrod, 74, widow of Dr. George Harrod, died at her home in the Sunny Gap community, east of Conway, Sunday.

Mrs. Harrod had suffered from a heart condition more than two years. Born May 16, 1882, she was a native and lifelong resident of Faulkner County. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are one son, George Harrod of Southern State College faculty at Magnolia; one daughter, Mrs. Homer Richie of Conway; and six sisters, Mrs. B.C. Rotenberry of Little Rock; Mrs. W.A. Black of Dallas, Tex., Mrs. H.E. Cook, Mrs. Norvin Purtle, Mrs. Jack Thrasher, and Mrs. Vick Horton of Conway.

Funeral will be at the Liberty Church of Christ at 2;30 p.m. Tuesday by Lucian Farrar with burial in Old Liberty Cemetery by Doolin's Funeral Home.

Mrs. Perlin Thayer Hartje, 95, of Durango, Colo., formerly of Conway, widow of Henry C. Hartje, Sr., died Friday (June 06, 1986).

Born December 01, 1890, in Conway, a daughter of John Henry and Capitola Barley Thayer, she was a housewife and a member of First Presbyterian Church at Durango.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Robert Hartje of Springfield, Ohio, and Henry C. Hartje, Jr., of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Foreman of Durango; a sister, Mrs. Ellen Oglesby of St. Louis; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at Oak Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Hutton officiating. Burial will be by McNutt Funeral Home.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.M. Satterfield on Highway 60 in western Conway.

FORMER CONWAY RESIDENT DIES

Henry C. Hartje, 77, of North Little Rock, formerly of Conway, died Tuesday (March 19, 1968). He was dead on arrival at North Little Rock Memorial Hospital from an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Hartje was a retired baker.

A native of Conway, he was a son of George W. and Mattie Duke Hartje.

He was married in 1921 to the former Perlin Thayer, who survives.

Mr. Hartje was a mason and a member of the Washington Avenue Methodist Church.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William Foreman of North Little Rock; two sons, Dr. Robert Hartje of Springfield, Ohio, and H.C. Hartje of Lakeland, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McNutt Funeral Home by the Rev. Roy A. Poyner. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with Masonic honors.

CONWAY NATIVE DIES IN PHOENIX

Mrs. Bernadine Hazel, 47, of Phoenix, Ariz., native of Conway, died Saturday (July 13, 1963) in Phoenix following an illness of two years. Death was caused by cancer.

Mrs. Hazel was a seamstress.

She was born September 12, 1915, in Conway, a daughter of Otis Jones and Dottie Askew Jones. She had lived at Phoenix eight years.

Besides her parents, survivors are four sons, Michael, Jerry, Eugene, and Kenney Jones, all of Phoenix; two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Grist of Macon, Georgia, and Pamela Hazel of Phoenix; two brothers, Bobby Jones of North Little Rock and Jimmy Jones of Conway; two sister, Mrs. Doris Powell of Conway and Mrs. Mary Purtle of Minden, La.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Old Liberty Baptist Church by Dr. J.E. Cobb. Burial will be at Old Liberty Cemetery by McNutt Funeral Home.

T.K. HAZEL, 91, NATIVE OF FAULKNER, DIES

Thomas K. Hazel, 91, of Conway, died at Memorial Hospital today (December 27, 1968) following a heart attack. Mr. Hazel was stricken Thursday and was immediately removed to the hospital. He was a retired farmer.

Mr. Hazel was born in Faulkner County, April 01, 1877, and lived here all his life. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are six sons, Euel, Claude, Enos, and Quinn Hazel of Conway, Ben Hazel of Phoenix, Ariz., and Eldon Hazel of Reno, Nev.; seven daughters, Mrs. Clara Stephens of Charlottesville, Va., Mrs. J.J. McHenry and Mrs. J.T. Venable, both of North Little Rock, Mrs. Tomya Graham, Mrs. Ferrell Avra, Mrs. Wendell Bryant, and Mrs. Clarence White of Conway; a stepson, Chester Harris of Conway; 51 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Leon Hazel and Bill Hazel, were killed in action 17 days apart during World War II. One was killed in Germany and the other in the South Pacific.

Arrangements for Mr. Hazel will be announced by Pence Funeral Home.

Mrs. Argenta Hazel, 80, of Rt. 1, Conway, wife of T.K. Hazel, died today (December 30, 1964) at Memorial Hospital following an illness of four weeks.

Mrs. Hazel was born February 14, 1884, in Senatobia, Miss., a daughter of the late William and Mary Wilkerson. She was a Baptist.

She married Mr. Hazel on December 17, 1914.

Mrs. Hazel was a Gold Star Mother. Two of her sons were killed in action in World War II, 14 days apart.

Besides her husband, survivors include three sons, Eldon Hazel of Reno, Nev., Bennie Hazel of Phoenix, Ariz., and Chester Harris of Conway; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Venable of Little Rock and Mrs. Wendell Bryant of Conway; four stepsons, Claude, Enos, Quinn, and Eual Hazel, all of Conway; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Clara Stephens of Charlottesville, Va., Mrs. J.J. McHenry of Little Rock, and Mrs. Clarence White, Mrs. Tommy Graham, and Mrs. Fred Avra of Conway; three brothers, Everett Wilkerson of West Memphis, Bill Wilkerson of Helena, and George Wilkerson of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Patrick and Mrs. Genevive Wells of Memphis, Tenn.; 49 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.

82-YEAR RESIDENT OF FAULKNER DIES

Mrs. Sallie Gwatney Hendrickson, 91, of 620 First Street, died Friday (March 24, 1967) at Memorial Hospital after a week's illness. She was the widow of John T. Hendrickson.

Mrs. Hendrickson was born July 25, 1875, in Mobile, Alab., a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gwatney. She lived in Faulkner County 82 years and was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church in the Caney community.

Mrs. Hendrickson is survived by seven sons, Homer A. Hendrickson of Conway, Loyce Hendrickson, Taft Hendrickson, and Jim Hendrickson, all of Okla., Davis Hendrickson of Bragg City, Mo., H.C. Hendrickson of Duncan, Okla., and B.E. Hendrickson of Princeton, Ind.; 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Higgs, a Conway native, was born January 07, 1892, a daughter of A.S. and Florence Barley Lind. She was a Methodist.

Mrs. Florence D. Higgs, 90, a former resident of Conway, died today at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Edna Sweet, at North Little Rock. Mrs. Higgs had been in ill health two years.

She was the mother of Mrs. Bess Higgs of Conway. Born at Bluffton, Ind., Mrs. Higgs spent most of her life in Arkansas. She was a methodist.

Surviving besides her two daughters, are two sons, George Lind of North Little Rock and Joe Lind of Tucker; and 20 grandchildren.

Jesse L. Hightower, 86, of Greenbrier died Thursday (February 20, 1986).

He was a retired farmer and a member of Needs Creek Missionary Baptist Church for 73 years. He was born September 15, 1899, at the Needs Creek community, a son of David Joshua and Caroline Glover Hightower.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Hightower; four sons, Kenneth and Willie James Hightower, both of Greenbrier, the Rev. Shelby Hightower of Dubberly, La., and Billy Ray Hightower of Conway; a daughter, Mrs. Frances McCarty of Little Rock; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

FRED HOBBS CLAIMED BY DEATH: BARBER HERE 40 YEARS

Paul Fred Hobbs, veteran Conway barber, died at the new Veteran Hospital in Little Rock late Wednesday afternoon. He was 64.

Mr. Hobbs entered the hospital six weeks ago.

He came to Conway more than 40 years ago and operated a shop on Front Street for many years. In recent years, however, he had been employed at the O.K. Barber Shop. Mr. Hobbs was probably acquainted with as many residents here as any citizen in Conway.

Born at Knoxville, Ark., March 08, 1891, he was a son of the late Morris H. and Cynthia Jane Carr Hobbs.

His marriage to the former Ethel Nixon, who survives, occurred at Conway, March 08, 1919.

Mr. Hobbs was a veteran of WWI. He spent 13 months in France. He was a Methodist and a Mason.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Norman Duggan of Palo Alto, Calif.; three brothers, Harry A. and Casper J. Hobbs of Little Rock, and Morriss H. Hobbs of Madrid, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. A.L. Jett of Knoxville; three grand-sons and one grand-daughter.

Ell Holmes, 89, of Dover (Pope Co.) died Saturday (January 10, 1981). He was a half-brother of Mrs. Ruby Leonard of Damascus.

Mr. Holmes was a Baptist.

MRS. JOE R. HOLMES DIES AT HER HOME IN MUSKOGEE, OKLA

Mrs. Lula Harris Holmes, aged 47, wife of Joe R. Holmes, died at 3:34 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the family home, 231 North 17th Street, Muskogee, Okla., according to word received here. The funeral was scheduled to be held at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon by Dr. L.S. Barton, pastor of the St. Paul's Methodist Church at Muskogee. Burial will be held Friday morning at Durant, Okla., former home of the family of the deceased.

Mrs. J.R. Holmes, mother, and Mrs. Ray Reid, sister of Mr. Holmes, left here yesterday afternoon when informed of her critical condition and reached Muskogee one hour after death occurred.

Mrs. Holmes with her husband had frequently visited Conway and had numerous friends here.

Mrs. Holmes was a native of Missouri and had resided in Oklahome since early childhood. She received her education at Southeastern Teachers College, Durant, and the University of Oklahoma. She was a member of the public school faculty at Ada, Okla., at the time of her marriage to Mr. Holmes in 1917, shortly before he left for military service in France. After his return to the United States, they resided in Sapulpa, Okmulgee, and Muskogee. He is superintendent of Muskogee city schools and a member of the Oklahoma board of education.

Surviving relatives other than Mr. Holmes are three children, Betty Katherine, Joe, Jr., and Harris Holmes. Mrs. Holmes was the last surviving member of a large family.

MRS. J.R. HOLMES DIES FOLLOWING LENGTHY ILLNESS

Mrs. Betty Kelsey Holmes, 83, a native and lifelong resident of Faulkner County, died at the Richardson Rest Home here Thursday night following an illness of several months.

Mrs. Holmes was the widow of James Robert Holmes of the Liberty community, east of Conway, whose death occurred in 1929.

She was born October 23, 1870, a daughter of the late Joseph Robert and Elizabeth Dunaway Kelsey.

Mrs. Holmes is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dula Reid, Faulkner-Van Buren County Librarian, and Mrs. Holwyn Hamlett of Conway; three sons, Joe R. Holmes of Kansas City, Mo., Hulon H. Holmes of Searcy, and Cyril Holmes of Tulsa, Okla.; a half-sister, Mrs. W.A. Russell of Little Rock; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at McNutt Funeral Home at 4 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Joel A. Cooper and burial will be in New Liberty cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

JOE R. HOLMES, EDUCATOR, DIES IN KANSAS CITY

Joe R. Holmes, 71, a native of Faulkner County and for many years an outstanding educator in Oklahoma, died last night (April 14, 1964) at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

His death follows an illness of several years. The immediate cause, however, was complications from a fractured hip and pneumonia.

Mr. Holmes was connected with the United States Department of Health Education and Welfare when ill health forced his retirement. He had lived in Kansas City eight years.

He formerly was superintendent of public schools in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

He was born in the Liberty community, east of Conway, July 16, 1892, a son of J.R. Holmes and Betty Kelsey Holmes. After attending school at Vilonia he entered the former Hendrix Academy and graduated from Hendrix College in 1916.

He was in the Army during World War I and saw service in France. He took up education work in Oklahoma shortly after his discharge from the service.

Mr. Holmes obtained a master's degree from the University of Chicago and also did work toward a doctorate at Columbia University in New York.

He was a Methodist.

Surviving are a son, Joe HOlmes, Jr., of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Harris Holmes of Dallas, Tex.; two daughters, Mrs. Mack McGuire of Oklahoma City and Miss Ann Holmes of Kansas City; two brothers, Cyril Holmes of Dallas and Hulen H. Holmes of Searcy; and two sisters, Mrs. Dula Reid of Conway, and Mrs. Ethel Hamlett of Vilonia.

Funeral and burial will be tomorrow in Kansas City.

The aged mother of J.R. Holmes died Sunday and was buried at Old Liberby Cemetery. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones, especially to the heart-broken husband.

MISS AGNES HOLMES

Miss Agnes Holmes, aged 22, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Holmes, died at their home in the Naylor community Sunday at 4:25 a.m., after an illness of typhoid fever which had continued for three weeks. Miss Holmes was born in Cleburne County, March 21, 1915, and the family had lived at Naylor for the past two years. Surviving besides her parents are three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Dempsey, Mrs. Rosa Carmichael, and Miss Lottie Holmes. Funeral Services were held at three o'clock by Rev. A. Wall, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which Miss Holmes was a member, and burial at Marcus Hill Cemetery was in charge of Doolin's Funeral Home.

MRS. EDWARD HOLMES SUCCUMBS AT NAYLOR

Mrs. Martha Jane Holmes, 58, [wife] of Edward Holmes, died at her home in the Naylor Community, near Mount Vernon, last night. Mrs. Holmes had been ill three years. She was born at Morganton, Van Buren County, January 22, 1885, and had lived at Naylor 16 years. She was a Baptist. Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Dempsey of near Conway, Mrs. Rosa Carmichael and Miss Lottie Holmes of near Vilonia; and three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Walker and Mrs. Amanda Cook of Heber Springs, and Mrs. Dora McClaren of Lake Providence, La. Funeral services were conducted at Marcus Hill Cemetery at 3 p.m. today by Rev. J.H. Lane and burial was in charge of Doolin's Funeral Home.

MARCUS HILL

Mrs. Martha Holmes of Naylor was buried here Friday afternoon. She was a good Christian woman and had many friends. We extend sympathy to the bereaved.

E.L. HOLMES, 76, DIES AT NAYLOR

Edward Layton Holmes, 76, a retired sawmill mechanic and farmer, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. I.J. Carmichael, in the Naylor community last night (August 07, 1960) following a heart attack. Mr. Holmes' home was at Naylor.

He was born at Rolla, Mo., April 22, 1884, and lived in Faulkner County 35 years. He formerly resided at Morrilton. He was a Methodist.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ted Dempsey of Conway and Mrs. Lottie Cones of Little Rock; two brothers, L. Holmes of Manco, Calif., and Fred Holmes of Winton, Calif.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Ruby Leonard of Damascus and Mrs. Jerishia Turner of England, Ark.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

LOCALS

James House died Saturday after a lengthy illness of typhoid fever.

His remains were buried last Sunday at Oak Grove Cemetery. A large number of people were in attendance at the funeral, which was conducted by Pres. A.C. Millar of Hendrix College. Deceased was about 27 years of age. He came here with his mother's family (Mrs. M.J. House) from north Mississippi about four years ago. Dan Taylor, who is well known here, married his sister. A large number of friends extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
