About four-hundred souls are buried here in this well maintained, very peaceful place and it is still growing. Located three miles north of Oden beside the Brushey Creek Missionary Baptist Church (correct name). This has always been the name, since it was organized in 1874. This is the third church building at this location. A log building where the church now stands was used as the second Brushy School and was probably shared by the church. Reference: Montgomery County:Our Heritage Vol. 1. Photographs taken June 1998, soon after Decoration Day (annually 1st May). A large picnic shelter with tables was erected to the left of the church in 1999 soon after the photo below was taken.
Update: On Find A Grave 335 interments listed as of Nov. 2010 with photos. March 2022 there are 395 graves listed with photographs. The first church was built in l874, and was located where the present church is only closer to the road, about where the church sign is now. The present church building was built in l940, a wooden frame building with siding, then the brick siding was put on several years ago. Reference: Pearl Beshears. Her husband Rev. Arthur Beshears (1920-1983) used to be minister their several years ago.
Warranty Deed; Deed Book G, page 190:
Dorcas Singleton, deeded two acres of land to "the Baptist Church of Brushy Creek" on 24 April 1880. Donated. The land being in the NW quarter of the NW quarter of Section twenty (20) Township One (1) south., Range twenty-six west." Location as 20-1-26.
Additional property was deeded to the Brushy Creek Baptist Church from R.M.-M.C. Evans to the church on 27 August 1905. Book N, page 5, location 17-1-26. Patent can be viewed at the Bureau of Land Management Web Site Additional land was donated for cemetery use in 1982 by the Forestry doubling the size of the cemetery.
Brushy Creek Cemetery is just to the right of the church.
2014
The church was organized at a meeting in the Brushy school house on May 24, l873.
Minister: Joseph Shirley
Deacons: Louis Shirley, S. Rogers, and C. C. Pope.
Charter members were: Males; J. C. Pullen, G. W. Hill, D. F. Singleton.
Females; Salina Pullen, Sara Ann Freeman, Louisa J. Hill, Susan E. Hill, and Elizabeth Singleton.Where are the WPA records for Brushy Creek Baptist Church? The records consist of two volumes (1904 - 1929) and are labeled "Buck Knob", records the baptisms, deaths and members. They were last in the custody of Hugh Singleton who is now deceased, probably died in Dallas, Arkansas after 1986. Pearl Beshears, was the trustee for the cemetery, said his children are also deceased and some are buried at Brushy. Posted July 2000.
Polk Township: Those buried here at Brushy probably grew up on the many farms down Brushy Road and around Oden so many of these folks can be found on the Federal Census under Polk Township, Montgomery County, AR.
Cemetery transcription completed in three hours during a visit to cemetery June 2000 by Olwyn and one day placing it online. The rows run west to east. Row one is the row starting at the fence to the right of the gateway. All rows start from the fence that is close to the church. The oldest graves are near the gateway which is just to the right of the of the right hand edge top photo i.e. near the beginning of each row. Approximately 426 graves including 78 field stones so about 350 with headstones. Inscriptions are found on either side of the headstones so at times it is difficult to figure out were the deceased lays. Transcription errors are found in the 1986 and the 1997 Montgomery County, Arkansas cemetery books. e.g. 27 Willhite inscriptions, three with Wilhite but both cemetery books spell all Wilhite missing the double "LLs". M.J. Copland (row 12) 1862 oldest marked grave. Who else is buried here? 240 photos of headstones offsite

Big Brushy Creek and the low water bridge. The gravel road leads back, across the creek, to the Brushy Church and on to Oden and forward to Big Brushy Recreational Area. August 1998.
Big Brushy, day use only. The area received 11 to 13 inches of rain around 31st May 2013 and Big Brushy Recreational area was sweep by flood waters. At least three picnic tables where sweep down the bank, the play ground damaged.
If you continue north down the gravel road, cross the low water bridge, turn right you will end up at the rustic, secluded Big Brushy Recreational Area and Highway 88. Picnic tables, group picnic shelter, grills, playground, hiking trails, and fishing was maintained by the National Forest Service. Chemical toilets, no showers. There is also a seven mile rough undulating mountain bike trail at Big Brushy Recreational Area."Rough" said Kevin age 10. Probably quicker to walk than trying to bike. A real good work out. Another way to get there to avoid the gravel road, go back to Oden, take Hwy 88 three miles east to Pencil Bluff, turn left (NW), on Hwy 270, about six miles on your left, turn left soon after Fiddlers Creek bridge. There is also a Little Brushy Creek and both join and become Brushy Creek. The Arkansas Democrat Gazette 20 March 2006
BIG BRUSHY TRAIL COMPLEX Location: Trailhead is at Big Brushy Campground (no longer a campground due to flooding in may 2013) on U.S. 270, six miles west of Pencil Bluff. Length: Several trails combine for easy to moderate hiking. Lengths vary from three miles (along the creek and back) to 12 miles (several trails combined).
Recommended: A recent hike combined the Brushy Creek Trail, Ouachita Trail and Brushy Mountain Trail for a varied and leg-stretching 7 - 8-mile trek. It took five hours, but the hiker was also taking pictures and looking for bears.
Well-marked trails follow Brushy Creek, trek up to ridge tops, loop around Brushy Mountain and descend back to the campground. The legendary Ouachita Trail cuts through the complex.
Hazards: None along the trail, but this is bear country. Scat was observed. Make lots of noise.
Amenities: Area closed from May 2013. Day use only.
Fees: None (no camping). Dog, bike friendly: Dogs will love this complex (except for any bears).
Mountain bikes are welcome on all but Brushy Mountain Trail (take the parallel Ouachita Trail down to the campground).Jacob Parks Holliday
