Grenade Cemetery, Montgomery County, Arkansas

"Whosoever will let Him Come"

The Grenade Cemetery was started in 1890 crowning a knoll donated by John Chapman behind the Grenade Holiness Church, two miles northwest of Pencil Bluff on Highway 270.  Majority of the headstones face towards Pencil Bluff and there is at least seven unmarked graves.   Decoration Day  held annually 2nd Sunday in June. The church land was donated by Charles Wesley Belcher and Benjamin Leonard for a Methodist Church. The Grenade Holiness Church began in the mid 1930's and the present brick building was erected in 1957.  Church sign

COOMER: Clem and Luster (Stacy) Coomer, my grandparents, lived in Oden in the late 1920's, before moving back to Hot Springs.  Five of their children, Leemon, Autlee, Evelyn, Lucille, and Orville Coomer, attended Liberty School.  Their sixth child, Virginia Eva Coomer, was born in Oden in 1928.  They were mainly involved in farming.  Clem's parents, Steven and Telitha (Westmoreland) Coomer also lived in Oden.  They are buried in Grenade Cemetery, along  with their sons, Claude and Jessie Coomer. Claude's wife, Etta Purdom- Jessie's wife, Minnie, and Jessie and Minnie's daughter, Rosa (Coomer) Carr Sargent, along with her second husband, James Sargent, are buried in Grenade also.   To my knowledge, Medroth Dobbs was our last living relative in Oden, she is buried in Grenade Cemetery.  Her husband was John. They lived in Pencil Bluff, at Grandma Coomer's place. Information courtesy of Mary Carroll. Posted Dec. 30. 2000.

TUCKER: James "Matt", a farmer, at age 20 married Rhoda Hill, age 23. Reference: Book D page 158 Montgomery Co. Courthouse.  I recall as a child some very happy memories, especially at grandma and grandpa's house, James and Rhoda Tucker.  Their land was 2 miles northeast of Pencil Bluff on Boles route on Hwy 270. Grandpa had land on both sides of the highway.  His eldest son, Vell,  farmed the smallest section on the south side of the highway. Vell married Hettie Bryant and they had five children. Farrell, Lela Mae, Bill, Rhoda Lou and James.  They graduated from Oden High School.  Hettie's parents were Albert and Lou Bryant of Whitetown.  Vell and Hettie's house sat just below the hill where Grenade Cemetary is today.  Vell Tucker built a camper on his truck to use as the first school bus to Central.  The old church that I knew as a child was right beside the cemetary and was a Holiness Church. That's where my family attended. Years later, 1941, that church burned down and was rebuilt --I believe, facing the highway. James and Rhoda's middle son was Olen Tucker.  He married Vera Johnson.  Vera taught school at Central School just above Grandpa's house for a couple of  years.  James and Rhoda's youngest son Lester went to school at Oden. He was inducted into the army during WWII. He later moved to Muskogee, Okla. Married and had two children. According to the census James and Rhoda had a daughter, Della, of which I knew nothing about.

Benjamin Franklin Leonard, buried between his 1st and 2nd wives. His second marriage was to a widow, Mary Ann Fryar Hill, my Great grandmother. They were married 29th Oct. 1893 by Adam Fair, M.G. Her 1st husband, Tom Hill, I believe, was killed during the Civil War. I remember her very well. She had three children: Thomas, Rhoda Lou and Mary Ann who married Dutch Gibbs.  Most all these folks listed above are buried in Grenade Cemetary. There are none that I know of still living in the area. Vell and Hettie's children live in Hot Springs, Texas and Ca.  My Great grandparents on my mother's side were David and Susan Scott King. They are buried in the Oden Cemetary. Information courtesy of Yvonne. Posted June 26 2001.
