Joplin Cemetery. June 2001.

The two acre fenced plot was donated by William Elija Mayberry in 1898, nearby was a Baptist Church and school both long gone. This cemetery is located twelve miles east of Mount Ida in Montgomery County, Arkansas. At the Highway 270 intersection with Mountain Harbor Rd turn up hill 100 yards up hill and turn right, above the Exxon gas station / convenience store. Easy to find. Sign posted.  The Joplin United Methodist Church, a new building, is another couple of hundred yards up Mountain Harbour Road on the left.

This cemetery transcription completed in four hours, during a June 2001, summer vacation while camping out at Denby Point by Olwyn. Triple the time placing the transcription online. 285 approx. graves. The rows are not straight so missed a few when compared with the Montgomery Counties Arkansas Cemeteries book which lists an additional 23 names.  I did not have time to re-walk the cemetery.  The rows run east - west with row one starting to the right of the gate. The cemetery is tidy but grass is starting to cover the graves to the west. The Coffman section is well maintained with a concrete border.

The oldest marked grave is Robert Davis  Feb.  1, 1897 - Oct 17, 1898, the eighteenth months old son of M.H. "Bud" & H.E. Davis, located near the back-center. Buried here is Robert Buttram, a CSA veteran, had a general mercantile store in Joplin. His wife died in 1908, he remarried but was later divorced.

John L. Cearley, PVT 28 inf. 1 DIV. who was killed in France in 28 July 1918 and George W. Cearley, Captain, Co. E., 373 Engineers, 9 Reg., May 5 1903 - Jan 12 1946, WW11. Both listed on the War Memorial in Mount Ida.

Sixteen WWII returned servicemen including Ernest Smith, died May 1943, and George Stanley, died December 1945, both have a 12 feet flagpole standing at the head of their graves.  Elija Mayberry and his wife Sarah Ann are buried here. Decoration Day& Clean Up Day is always held the second Sunday in May. Twenty two unknown graves are marked with either a metal cross or field stone or both plus nine unreadable Funeral Home Markers. Who else is buried here?

Cpl. Ernest E. Smith
17th Inf. WW11
Feb. 15 1916 - May 30 1943. Note the date on his headstone in May 20 1943.
Joplin Cemetery, Montgomery County, AR

Cpl. Ernest Smith of Silver was awarded the Bronze Star medal posthumously at Camp Robinson, Little Rock on Friday March 2. His mother Mrs Louella Smith was asked to accept the award on his behalf by Col. G.C. Graham. The award is being made in recognition of his heroic actions against the enemy during the Attu operation on May 29 and 30, 1943. Cpl Smith with complete disregard for his own personal safety and entirely upon his own initiative, moved to an exposed position under heavy fire only 25 yards from the enemy. He remained in this position, firing his rifle until the possession of the anti-tank gun regained. He was also instrumental in destroying an enemy command post with heavy machine gun fire and grenades. On May 30, during another enemy counter-attack, Cpl. Smith was killed in action while endeavoring to stop the enemy before his position.

He was initially buried at Attu's Little Falls Cemetery and in 1946. Little Falls Cemetery was located near the foot of Gilbert Ridge, to the north and west of the old Navy Base (Navy Town). In 1946, the American's remains were removed and buried either at Ft. Richardson near Anchorage, AK; Sitka, AK; or in other locations as designated by their relatives. There is no visible signs of the cemetery today.

Silvanus H. Priddy
Born: May 12, 1853
Died: January 29, 1900

Silvanus PRIDDY was born to John C. (Carr) Priddy and Rutha N. Hill Priddy in Montgomery County, AR. His mother died shortly after his birth. John Carr Priddy is shown on the 1860 Montgomery Co. Census, page 933, he is a farmer and minister of the Gospel. He is shown again on the 1870 Montgomery County, Merzion Twp, page 3. Silvanus is shown as being age 17.  John C. was an ordained Baptist preacher and was ordained as a Baptist minister while living in Hamilton County, TN, his preaching credentials were filed in 1842. When moving to Arkansas, he filed a copy of his credential in Montgomery Co., AR. The document is filed in the courthouse at Mt. Ida with the Early Marriages of Montgomery Co., AR. John C. Priddy served in the Civil War  as a Union soldier enlisted on April 17, 1862 in Keetsville, Missouri in Company E of the 37th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers of the United States. At the time of his enlistment, he was described as a loyal citizen of Arkansas and was listed as a farmer. After he entered camp at Springfield Missouri, he became ill. He was taken to Camp Scholfild in Flat Creek, Missouri, On February 3, 1863, he received his discharge of Disability on February 17, 1863, at Camp Bliss, Missouri. He remained out of service for about four and one-half months. On July 1, 1863, he enrolled at Cassville, Missouri for 3 years in Company I of the 1st Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry. He spent most of his remaining military service in recruitment. He also served on the Arkansas Legislature 1864 -1866 and he was a delegate to the Arkansas Convention and represented Montgomery Co. in the constitutional Convention held January 4-January 23, 1864. He was also a delegate and represented Montgomery and Perry Counties in the Constitutional Convention held January 7 - February 18, 1868. His occupation was listed as a Minister and his vote on the Constitution was "Aye." John Carr Priddy died in 1894 while living in Texas and he is buried in Parker County, TX.

Silvanus married Rutha Abigale Williams on December 5, 1872 in Montgomery Co. They were the parents of 14 children: John Henry, Mary Tennessee, Thomas Harrison, Hester LeVada, Andrew Jackson, George Washington, Claria Nealie, James Shadrack ("Jim"), Oda, William Louis, Nancy Jane, Lydia, Robert Rufus, and Joseph Joshua ("Jack"). Silvanus also moved to Texas and owned land there. After his father's death, Silvanus left Texas and was back in Montgomery Co., Arkansas about 1899. He was in poor health, and his family probably survived on the money they received from selling the land they had in Texas. Silvanus died of unknown causes while the family was living in the Joplin, Arkansas area. The family say that Silvanus was buried at the Joplin Cemetery and they marked his grave with a field stone. After his death, Silvanus's wife, Rutha, moved her family to Yell County where her older married children were living. She remained in Yell County until her death. She is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Briggsville, Yell Co., AR. Silvanus had a limited education, but he could quote almost the entire Bible from memory. People traveled for miles to hear him quote the Scripture, and he especially enjoyed helping children memorize Bible verses.
