The Lone Valley Cemetery 1886 - to 2002 is located .7 miles on Hwy 88 east of the 298 & 88 intersection in Sims in Montgomery County, Arkansas behind the Lone Valley Church. Thomas E. Swinford who died in 1886 was the first person buried at this site (now the Lone Valley Cemetery). He (17i) is buried beside his daughter. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Daves. Mary was a d/o A.M. Daves, and that family owned many acres there. Thomas and Mary's son is buried at Macedonia Cemetery. George and Cinthia Daves, according to courthouse documents sold land to the Texas, Arkansas and Indian Territory Eldership of The Church of God for $1 on September 10, 1890. Buried at Lone Valley Cemetery are about 300 and at least forty Carters, Stovall and Summits. The Barber Cemetery is located one mile north of Sims.
Decoration Day is the fourth Sunday in May. 414 marked graves not counting the 20 reserved plots but including 16 fieldstones plus a tree stump, 20 illegible headstones and a few broken headstones. Who died d. Nov 30 1902? There is one Union soldier buried there. Obediah Laramore Co. H. 1st ARK Cav. Union Army. No dates are on the headstone but he was b. February 27, 1837. Died December 11 1915, Sims m. August 15, 1866 to Elizabeth Norman Hinton b. April 17, 1850 d. March 10 1915, Sims. There were six children, the forth was the male.
CSA Soldier
James A. McConnell served in Co I, 33rd Inf. Reg., CSA. His rank was private. He
joined on June 24th 1862 at Caddo Gap, in Capt. Erwin's co. Grinsteads Regiment.
He was born in 1827, in Hempstead Co. son of Robert & Sarah
McConnell. He was fatally wounded in action in March
1863 in or near Little Rock. His wife Harriet went to Little Rock, claimed the
body, and returned to bury him in Mt. Ida. The south fork of the Ouachita River
was flooded and she could not cross it, so she buried him in Sims before the
cemetery was named Lone Valley. He has remained there for 147 years, with
nothing but a rock to mark his grave. In 1907
Harriet dies and is buried at his
side. Her marker is a rock with the Int. H. T. scratched into it. She had
married Lorenzo Trout for a period of about 5 years, 1865 to 1870, and never
divorced from him. That is why her last name was Trout when she died. James and
Harriet's daughter Martha A. McConnell/Copeland/Sims/Barnett is buried their.
Martha's first husband William Copeland, and her second husband William Perry
Sims is among them. I'm not sure exactly which fieldstone one is William
Perry's. Information courtesy of David
Johnson. Posted 12 Jan. 2010.
Marvin Tabor helped build the old Lone Valley Church building that stood where the present building stands. The old church building was torn down and the current one was built in the same spot. The old building was a taller structure. There was a dug well at the location in the very early 1900s. We believe there was originally a church building across the road, before the cemetery became established.

Flowers
All flowers blown off graves or strewn over the Cemetery will
be picked up and hauled to the dump. On flat graves, please group your
flowers as near the headstone as possible, so the mower can mow over the
graves. When cleaning the graves please take the old flowers and other
trash to the dump. Do not plant flowers, trees or shrubbery in cemetery.
Please do not litter. Thank you.
The cemetery has been enlarged adding ground to the left of a grass track divides the old section from the new. There has been two cemetery books published covering the Montgomery Co. AR cemeteries both have additional names and information on the people buried here but I didn't find their headstones in March 2002. For Lone Valley the 1986 cemetery book is more accurate than the 1997 book. e.g. the Maxey's, Laramore's, Lundry's and Stephenson's are missing out of the 1997 book. Find A Grave 224 interments listed as Nov. 2010
Row 1 starts in the right hand corner of the photo, running parallel to a country road going right to left. Cemetery transcription by walking at the cemetery was completed during Spring Break March 2002 by Olwyn. Have not been back to recheck the transcription so there will be transcription errors. Email me please so I can make corrections - Thanks, Olwyn.
