Allen J. Powell was b. in 1813 in Rhea County, Tenn. (The initial J. could be for either Jackson or Joseph.)
He was m. to Elizabeth Holloway in Blount County, AL, on Sept. 18, 1833. In 1850 Allen J. was living in Blount County, AL, near
the towns of Blountsville and Summit. Living
in his household was his father and mother, James Powell, SR. and Mazdy.
Also in the household was a brother, James Powell,
JR. During the early 1850s
Allen and his immediate family moved to Montgomery County, AR,
near the town of Mount Ida. Also
making the move was his brother, Absalom who was m. to Milly Holloway, a
sister to Elizabeth. Tradition has
it that they were members of a wagon train drawn by
mules or oxen that included the Montgomery County families of
Wacaster, Moore,
Lizenby and others.
When they came through Hot Springs Arkansas, Joseph
was to have said it was "too close to hell."
In 'Montgomery County: Our Heritage' Vol 1. page 168 Wesly W. Powell,
a great grandson of Joseph Powell, submitted an article. "Joseph first
homesteaded in the Powell Mountain area near the Montgomery-Yell County line.
Later they moved down on the Ouachita River to Wake Creek-- at that time Montgomery
County. He farmed, raising livestock and later cotton." William A. Powell was born
4 Nov. 1853. He married Mary Elizabeth MOORE and they reared twelve children. The photograph
listed as the Joseph Powell's is actually William A. and family. Powell
Mtn is in Yell Co. with a summit of 1513'. Wake Creek is a stream in west
Montgomery Co. AR.

there during
early summer of 1859. His eldest son, Joseph, was made administrator of his estate
and was also appointed guardian of Allen's children under the age of fourteen.
These children were Allen Andrew Jackson, Nancy E., and Isaac Franklin.
Another child, Absalon G., had d. during the summer of 1859.
There was also a son, James A. age about twenty in Allen's home at the
time of his death. Allen J. brother Absalom passed away in Montgomery Co.
c.1854.

Joseph is wearing a couple of ribbons, so the occasion was maybe a Civil War
Veterans reunion. There was a Reunion at Hurricane Grove in 1912. He was living with this family in 1920 and when he died in
1929. Joseph served in the Co. I. 33rd Arkansas Infantry.
He enlisted in the summer of 1862 when he was 27 soon to be 28. He made it home at least once as he had a child born in 1864. He wed five times and having
19 children among three wives.

He was b.1842 in Ireland, and d. 1883 in AR. They had six children.

COTTON 16 Sept. 1888 in South Fork, Township, Montgomery Co. AR. Issue four
children, divorced in 1903.
There were other marriages for Zara Lucerne Cotton.
Zara was b. 9 May 1834 in
Fayetteville, Onadayga Co., NY, and d. 04 Sept. 1905 at home,
Montgomery Co. AR. Zara is buried in
the same cemetery as Joseph Powell. Peak Cemetery is just barely in Garland
County.
Zara was a County Clerk in Montgomery Co. He was
also a carpenter/cabinet maker, lawyer, and many other things. There was even a street
in Mt. Ida named after him. At Highway 27 and Luzerne street is the
museum. She married a LOOMIS, no issue. Mr. LOOMIS died in 1905.

Cemetery is a large community cemetery with at least
450 marked graves and 32 unmarked graves just barely in Garland County but was in Montgomery Co. AR until the county line
changed before 1917. This web page names
100 folks who are buried there and the 1996 Montgomery Co. Cemetery book
lists 38 Powell's with headstones buried there. From Crystal Springs, AR go
south to first junction. Turn right and about four miles, keep right. Take a
map. The cemetery became fill so Jake Weston purchased four acres from Wm. A.
Powell and a few more acres from Pleas Powell, and formed the
existing Peak Cemetery. Wm Jake Weston m. Isabella B. Powell 18 Dec. 1904 d/o Wm
and Mary Powell.
