Greenwood, Charles B.

Marked Tree, AR, Gazette, March 29, 1912; The Craighead Co. Hist. Soc. Quarterly, V39, N4, pp11-12

C.B. Greenwood Died Saturday - Had Been Sick Short Time With Pneumonia; Well Known and Well Liked. Died, at his home in Lepanto, Saturday night, March 23, at 8:15 o'clock, Charles B. Greenwood, age 54 years. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. Jas. F. Jernigan, and the remains were followed to their final resting place (Greenwood Cem.) by a large following of friends. He was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. The stranger, even though a beggar, never failed to find food and shelter if he sought it at his hands, and he was at home by the bedside of the sick and delighted in all kinds of neighborly offices. He had borne adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. He had filled the various relations of life as son, husband, father, brother, friend and had filled them all well. He went to Lepanto when it was a vast wilderness and lived to see it grow into a thriving, beautiful little town, which he founded, the Township being named Greenwood in his honor, as well as the main thoroughfare being named Greenwood Avenue. But he is gone. Another name stricken from the ever lessening of our old settlers, and a solitary woman in the sunset of life and a lonely home are left to attest how sadly they will miss him. It must be so; these tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang. Yet in such a death there is really no cause for grief. His life work was done, and wearied with life's duties and cares, weary of suffering and waiting, he lay down to rest.
"Tired! ah yes! so tired, dear;
I shall sleep soundly tonight,
with never a dream and never a fear,
to wake in the morning light"
