Stone County was formed 21 April 1873 from Independence, Izard, Searcy, and Van Buren Counties. It was named after the natural formations of the area. The county is known as one of the cultural centers of Ozark music and crafts and is home to the Ozark Folk Center, as well as, Blanchard Springs Caverns.
