Thank you so much, Joy.   I believe they were in War Eagle township
in the 1860 census.    William D. Howard served in the Union Army,
having enlisted in MO,  and he died in 1873.   I am not sure where.
My main interest in the Howard burials was to see if any of the small
children of William D. and Jeanetta, who were  in the 1860 census but
not in the 1870 census. could have been buried some time in the 1860s
in War Eagle.    Their graves, if any, may not have been marked.   I
have never been able to find Jeanetta Howard  and the children in any
1880 census, but she remarried in Crawford County, AR in 1881 to a
man named James Bowman.    Her son William Thomas Howard, my line,
married in 1884 in Crawford County to Emeline Smith and they lived at
Mulberry, which at times was in Crawford County but now in Franklin
County, AR.   Thank you.  Pansylea Howard Willburn

I looked at the 1870 census you mentioned for William David and
Genetta Howard.  They are not living in War Eagle Township in 1870, but in
California Township, which is in an entirely different part of Madison
County.  There are several cemeteries in California Township that they  could possibly
 be buried at.

Do you have proof that they died in Madison County?  I looked at the 1880 Madison County census, but didn't find them in that census listing.

Hi Taylor people, I have a g-g grandfather, William H. Taylor, who enlisted in the
First Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Co B, 19 June 1862 in Ft. Smith, AR. He states there that he was 21 years old and born in Franklin County, AR. His parents were Jessee and Sarah Taylor and they appear in the 1850 Census in Ft. Smith. I would like to tie this Jessee and Sarah with the Jessee Taylor family in Franklin County, White Oak township, in the 1840 Census. Is there anyone out there related to this family who might have some ideas about connection?

There is also a William Taylor in Franklin County in 1840 living near Jessee's family and that William is perhaps older enough to be a father to Jessee? I would appreciate any discussion on this.

Thank you.

See 1860 Census.   This census has just been started and will be online in a couple of months.

This family because dates of birth and matching names seem related to
the Hiram Kelly family near Hindsville, Madison County, AR. Hiram had
three daughters who married 2 into the Brown family and 1 into the
Alderson family....all in Madison County.

It appears this family moved to Madison County after this census.

I'll have to check dates, but this looks real close. William was born around 1800-1810 or so and William Jr. 1833 I believe. Add 16 to 1833 and get to 1849 and we are real close.
 Whic  Looks liek
Not documented, but family says Wm Sr. and his wife d around 1850. Wm. Jr later went with his family ((son(s) to Tyrone MO...then AR...the Jr. d in Oklahoma....don't know what he was doing there.

And of course the Hawkins family fits also.

Ramona,
Thank you for answering my reply. Rebecca Jane Fleeming-Horton was born 1875 and William B, Flemming was born abt. 1853-59, we think he came from Missouri, we aren't positively sure about that, but we do know that Rebecca was born in Boone County Missouri. We do have many ancestors from Tennessee. We are trying to put everyone together. We did see a Wiliam Fleming on the Federal Census who was from Tennessee. Thank you for helping.

Surnames: Moore

I'm looking for anything remotely related to Rev. Roswell B (R B) Moore b. 1834, d. 1909. He's buried in Highland Cemetery with his wife and 2 of his children.

I've read that a Roswell B. Moore purchased the Hamblen Property on Old Wire Road on June 8, 1878 from the Hamblem family. I'm trying to determine whether or not this is the same person. More details regarding this transaction and the later sale of the property would be great.

I'm looking for any clues in AR regarding the identity of his parents. I definitely have him in 1860/1870 in OH. I may have found him as the son of Benjamin More (b. abt 1801 PA) in the 1850 OH census. His mother is listed as Amanda. I'm looking for anything that can corroborate that. I've found several Benjamin Moores in the earlier censuses, however, those have no names other than head of household. The ages of a male and female family member in some of them do match up to "Amanda" and Roswell ages at the time.

I'm also curious about the Mrs. T. Moore diary and what Moore family she married into. She makes mention of Roswell's daughter's (Lucy Naylor) death.

Thanks!

Brian Moore

I am very interested in this family. my childrens gggg grandmother was Tennessee Adeline Thompson McCartney she was the daughter of Elsa/Elsick/Ezrick Thompson who married a Sarah and had Tennessee and Charles and a Manerva and had children Agigail, William A., Martha J., Louisa, Anna Amanda, Ada, Thomas, Margaret and Angeline. this family lived in Franklin co. Ark. from 1860 until the 1900's. Before they came to Arkansas they lived in Marion CO. Tn. in 1850. Living next to Elsick Thompson in 1860 in Franklin CO. ARk. is a William Thompson and a Permelia Maxfield Thompson with children Sarah E. , D. Frank, I believe this William is a brother to Elsick they list there birth places as Tennessee on some censuses and Georgia on others. Then in 1880 in Franklin Co. Ark. I find a Isaac Thompson and Nancy ( ? Burns) had children named Lydia, Mary, George, William, Green, Sarah, Martha, Osborn and Dawson. this family has birth places of Tn. Nc, and Ga.

I went to the 1840 Marion Co. Tennesse census I traced all Thompsons the names as heads of household appear to be Ausburn, Moses, Charlotte, Hampton, William, and Ann.

The only two that have a son born in 1826 would be either Moses or Ausbern.

Now looking in the Ancestry and Rootsweb databases I find that Ausbern married a Abigail Wilson and had children Ausburn, William, Alexander, Mire, Nancy, Sarah and tennesse ( tempie).

Three of these sons died in Ark. no further info.

Now since our Elsick had children named Tennessee, Abigail and a son William this appears to be on the right track.

Can anyone help figure this mess out.

My gggrandfather, John Crossland, a white man,  married a Cherokee woman, and left Sautee, Alabama,  for Arkansas Territory in 1819.  He settled near the mouth of the Mulberry-Arkansas Rivers, with other Cherokees. Under John Crossland's sponsorship, Dwight Mission staffed a school and a church near or on his property, in 1828.  Because of the Treaty of 1828, the Cherokees were forced to give up their lands in Arkansas for lands in Oklahoma, I. J.S. Kelly 87th Birthday

In the early morning, Monday, July 21, the relatives and neighbors began to wind their way to "Country Home" to celebrate the 87th birthday of J. S. Kelly, familiarly called "Uncle Jack"."

The birthday cake was presented by two step daughters, Mrs. Maggie Parker and Mrs. Carl Evans, with the dates 1834 - 1930.

All brought good-to-eats and nicely prepared.  "Uncle Jack", himself, sat at the new Atwater Kent and entertained the 50 persons who were present to enjoy the feast. (note: Atwater Kent was a radio)

His children tried to make it a perfect day for him.  The out of the neighborhood guest were Marion Russell of Dallas, Texas, his stepdaughters from Seminole and Oat Kelley from the same place, Richard Tompkins' two daughters of Little Rock, Mrs. L.D. Huggins, Ozark, and Mrs. Wm. Ketchem of Earlsboro.

Everyone was pleasant and left at the close of a perfect day, wishing him happy days and good cheer.

Do you know is there any information on this family in your area, I do not find them after the 1870 Census in your area and was just wondering if there might be any write up on this family in your area. Any help would greatly be appreciated.                     Sincerly Cindy G. Hamling

I am researching the following names in Franklin County:

EVANS, COVINGTON AND MAYNARD/MAYNER.

I am especially interested in information on William Edgar/Edward  "Eddie"
Mayner born Aug 27 1881 died Oct 30 1932.  He is buried in Oak Ridge
Cemetery.  His wife was Ora/Iry Brooks and they married Aug 25 1901.  He had
a son George who married Vera and a daughter Eunice or something similar.
I have found him in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Franklin Co census records
  He had red hair.
I need to know his fathers name or a descendant of George or Eunice who
might could tell me his fathers name.
I believe Eddie's father to have been Alexander Mayner son of Pleasant
Mayner.  His mother would have been Elizabeth Ritchie if this is the correct
father for him.  This Eddie would have been a half brother to my husbands
grandmother Sarah Jane Maynard Evans who married William Marion Evans.  He
would have been a full brother to Joseph Calvin Maynard,
Mayner and Maynard are frequently interchanged in this line.

Larry is this is a complete and accurate extract there is a problem.  You alluded to Swift being in the 1860 so I looked at my extract of that year here which I have annotated
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjhonson/FranklinARK/1860Franklin.htm

324 Swift Mullins 46 TN    [Killed near Clarksville]
Carolina 37 NC         [Caroline Hamblen dau of Thomas / Mary (Dunn)]
John 18 MO
Mahala 15 AR
William F 12 AR
Elizabeth 10 AR
Julia Ann 9 AR
Isaac 5 AR
Martha 3 AR
Benj 1 AR

You can see that John is 18 and Julia is 9 and Martha 3 as you stated HOWEVER there are lots of other children here.  Also the *way* you stated it was John as guardian of Julia and Martha without mentioning John as himself.  That would imply that JOHN is not a descendent but is only standing in for the two minors who ARE descendents if you follow that.  I'm saying he is their step-brother or half-brother it appears.
Also we'd have to assume that Issac and Benj are dead.  Then the older children have to be from a prior marriage.  Since no additional surname is given to them, maybe of Swift's although I've also seen a few cases where the prior children of the wife are not given their original surname in the census.  At any rate, we have a complex family here, not as simple as I first thought.

Subject: Conatser Family

Greetings,

My husband is descended from the Conatser Family. We have a puzzle that we hope you can help us.

Joseph/James Henry Conatser (1797-1878) had a son named William (Bill) P. Conatser (1826-1862).  William (Bill) P. Conatser had four sons:  William H. Conatser, Benjamin Franklin Conatser, Daniel/Andrew Conatser, and John/James Alexander Conatser.

My husband is descended from Benjamin Franklin Conatser.  We have two pictures of someone named Asberry and Hettie Conatser...on the back of one of the pictures it reads:  Asberry Conatser...brother of Benjamin Franklin Conatser.  We located Asberry and Hettie Conatser in the 1900 and the 1910 census records of Pike County, Arkansas.

Can you help us locate information about any of the above families?

Thank you kindly.
God bless America.

Thomas Hamblen died intestate, september 27, 1864. His son, Pleasant Walker Hamblen, Franklin County, AR, was appointed administrator to the Thomas Hamblen estate on May 31, 1866.

Question: Can I assume that those listed in the probate as heirs are, indeed, descendants of Thomas?

The reason for this question is that John D. Mullins, guardian of Martha J. and Julia A. Mullins, is listed as well. These three were children of Swift Flower Mullins and wife, Caroline, who both died during the Civil War. I have assumed that Caroline was the daughter of Thomas Hamblen. Thomas and Mary Hamblen did have an unnamed daughter between 5-10 years old in the 1830 census of Jackson County, MO. Do you think this is a fair assumption?

By the way, the current Mullins family researchers have Caroline as a Taylor, but have been unable to provide proof for me.

I am especially interested in information on William Edgar/Edward  "Eddie"

I have found him in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Franklin Co census records

You might check in Johnson County for the marriage.  The Honea's lived in

this section of the county when to Johnson County to marry.

Surnames: SHOCKEY CORDER HASSETT FORD FRICKE

Well Jane Martin just told me you are the one who knows most about the Iveys of Franklin County.  Thank you for your reply.

A Crawford County researcher sent me some info on my great grandfather Abraham Corder.  She became interested in the court case when she stumbled onto Moses Ford's tombstone in Crawford County.

The court case seems to be the result of a post Civil War feud between the Loyalists and the Democrats during Reconstruction.  My great-great grandparents were living at Pleasant View PO in Mulberry Twp. in 1860.  I am assuming they were probably in the same location in 1850 when they are shown to be in Middle Township.  Abe Corder's sister married Ed Hassett whose family seems to have been located in Franklin County, AR.

The newspaper articles came from the Van Buren Press, May 3 1870; pg 3 Col.3 and May 10 1870 pg 3
There was also a letter written May 6 1870 from Mulberry Mills [any idea where that was?]  Then there were other articles from a different perspective.  One started out -  1870 September 6 Ozark, Ark.  It is a letter to the editor giving an opinion of this court case.

The Players were -
Moses (Moody) Ford, living near Frazier's Gin [Any idea where this is] was found dead 10 miles from his home.  He had been shot.  Fricke, Moss and B. Simpson had been hunting when Ford was killed.
Henry A Fricke was shot by a posse who blamed him for Ford's death, while mistaking him for Ed Hassett..
J. R Meadows, Justice of the Peace for Lafayette Twp., Crawford County, issued the warrant for Fricke.  The posse members were -
Ed Hassett (Fricke's known enemy) , Bake Meadows, John F Meadows,  Abe Corder, Jake Rogers, Marion Roads, Ran Rowls, John Gaston and several others.  Meadors, Hasset and other posse members were arrested by Sheriff Anderson. Squire Ivey of Franklin Co. issued the writ.  Prosecuters were Col. S. Noone, & Capt. S L Wittich.  The case was transferred from James Ivey's court to Hon. J S Sutherland, County Court Judge for Franklin County.  J. P. Wm F Hoyle and Col. H R Withers defended.  Evidence had been heard before Sutherland and Hoyle.   The case was brought before G S Ciden and Wm F Hoyle.  Then the case was changed to the venue of Ivey's Twp.  Ivey discharged the posse for lack of evidence.  H R Withers & N W Patterson apllied for a new trial.  It was a no show.

Reuben Corder bought land in Lafayette Twp. in 1874 and Abe paid  real estate taxes for land near Reuben's in 1890.  The family moved to Lafayette Twp. in Crawford County by 1870.  Ed Hassett bought a hotel in Alma by 1881.

I am trying to possibly connect Louis Alexander Reid with a Reid family of Franklin, and learn more about his heritage. He was born in 1850 in Mississippi. His father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Mississippi. Louis had  sons named Walter (b. 1878 in Ark) and Louis A. Jr. from a previous marriage. I am only interested in a Reid family that may be related to him. They may have come from Ky. or Misssissippi, but maybe not. When Louis was younger he did use his middle name Alexander (or Alex) and sometimes his initials, which makes me wonder if perhaps his father may have been named Louis. Even a marriage record to Sarah W. O'Neal from Franklin Co. would at least show me he had lived there at one time. Shirley

I am searching for the family of William M. Brown who married Mary E. Wilson around 1911/12. Mary's parents were Zack and Fannie Wilson. Fannie was Fannie Catherine Morris.
I think possibly that a James Brown, born Feb., 1842 might have been the father to William M. Brown, as he had a son W. M. born 1878 around the same time as William M Brown. Can anyone help me?

David and Parthenia Gautier lived in Middle, Franklin, Franklin Co., Arkansas in the 1870s and 1880s according to the census from those years.  They had moved to Arkansas from Texas at some point in the later part of the Civil War or shortly thereafter.

They had a daughter, Amanda, who married Austin Thomas before 1870. We know of one child, Robert.

We are looking for any records of their existence, marriage, death and burial location and would so appreciate any help or leads you can give.

Looking for information on William W. Taylor, b. abt. 1825 in Ohio or Tenn, or Thomas F. Taylor, b. abt. 1827. They are in Pope County, Arkansas around Dover in the 1860 and 1870 census. In the 1880 census Thomas is in Franklin County, Arkansas and Williams wife Mary are living next to each other along with another William Taylor,John Taylor, Mathew Taylor and Houston Taylor.      You are a true FAMILY HISTORIAN (GENEALOGIST).  You really get it! Those
direct line ancestors and their progeny were & are REAL people w/ many facinating
details in their lives.  That is what we should be striving to find in our
research.  Not just names, dates & places.
Those of us who are persistent and subscribe to surname lists and locality
lists (e.g., Franklin County) are fortunate to find some of those cousins on line.
There are some descendants of my great grandfather's brother, John Anderson Morse,
with whom I would like to connect.  John's first wife was Caroline Rice, b. 1827
in Tn, d. 1880.  I would dearly love to hear from one of their descendants.  1870
census and 1880 land records show them in Franklin county.  I cannot find them or

Frustrating! Would also like to find the cemetery in which Caroline Rice Morse is

It is sobering to contemplate the numbers of cousins we collected in just
the past four generations.

In the past four generations each of us had eight sets of grandparents one
to four times removed.

Each generation in the Kelly line, and I suspect other lines as well, 4th
gparents produced ten children, 3rd generation nine children, 2nd generation
seventeen children, and each of those generations of children all added
together produced in total perhaps as many as ten thousand cousins.

Yet each of us are very lucky if we actually knew twenty cousins.

Worst yet, many of us have yet to discover the given names of of our eight
sets of  fore-parents

We have a lot of work to do.

So glad to have contact with another cousin.  I have heard of Garland Conatser my whole life.  My parents and my dads cousins have mentioned them while I was growing up.  Yes,  my Great Grandma Ellen Conatser married John A. Gray and John was the brother of Mary Belle.  My Grandma was Sarah Ethel Gray McLaren, John and Ellen's daughter.  My cousin and I get together once in awhile and look over family tree info and I tell her anything new I have found, and I borrow photos from her periodically to make copies of. She is 84 years old so she has a lot of old photos and info to share with me.  The only other relative I have been able to get in touch with is Rob Conatser who is also a ggrandson of Christopher Conatser.  He is Earnest Conatser's grandson.
Thank you so much for replying to my post, I am always so happy to hear from other relatives.

George Washington Sharp was married 1) Nancy Jane Mantooth in Ark, but I'm not sure of what county, maybe Franklin since that's where they lived.  2) Fannie Cudd, married in Franklin Co. Ark.

George was born 10 July 1864 and died 20 July 1939.  He's buried at Gill Cemetery in Van Buren, Ark.

I have a picture that is supposed to be the parents of Mary Katherine, but I don't have their names.  I would love to exchange information with you if we can connect.

Hi

Grandmother.  Her name is Mary Barens.  She is buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Altus, Franklin County Arkansas.  Headstone says Mary Barens b January 3, 1835 d January 3, 1931.  On 1930 census she was at White Oak, Franklin County, Arkansas listed as Mary Barnes in the household of her son Oliver.  Who would I need to contact to find out if there is one and get a copy if there is one.

Thank you
Pat

The Spectator newspaper has been published at Ozark, the county seat, since
1911.  Most likely her obituary would have been published in The Spectator.

The newspaper has been microfilmed.  I know the Ozark Public Library and the
Arkansas Archives in Little Rock have copies.  I am not sure who else has a
copy.

SURNAME: POINTER

I research the Pointer/Poynter families in the US.  The 1860 Census in White Oak Twp pgs 50/51 or 291 #358/346 shows a Mary Pointer 47 Farmer b. MO.  Her children included: Nancy J. 21, F.M. 18, (both born IL), Philander 15 & Teander (Leander?) 15 both born in MO, and Amasa 12 (Male) b. AR.  I have been unable to locate them on the 1850 Census.  Can anyone tell me who the father/husband of this family might have been?  Thanks for your help

SURNAME: ELLIOTT

My great great grandfather, Thomas Whitman Elliott, b. 15 Apr 1808 in Hardin Co. Kentucky and moved to Franklin County, Arkansas in the middle 1840's. He died 21 Aug 1852 after a horse smashed him against a barn door. He was buried, "in Hales Burying ground about three miles down on the south side of the Arkansas River from the county seat of Franklin County, Arkansas." I'm attempting to locate "Hales burying ground," and it is not listed as a cemetery in Franklin County. I have read that there was an earlier pioneer by the name of William Hail (or Hale) and William Cureton that own property in that same location. I've read that a David Walker and Archibald Yell bought land from Hail (Hale) and the land was developed starting in 1838 and the town of Charles Town (now Charleston) began.
My question for anyone that has done early pioneer history research is; "Hales burying ground" does it still exist and if so how do I find it, and is William Hail (Hale) have anything to do with this "burying" ground?

I have been researching the Cook family for several years, so I have a vested interest in this project.  My mother (Olive Eudora Cook) was born in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas in 1904.  I have not been able to locate any information for my branch of the Cook family. Her parents: John Lemule Cook, Josie Eudora Claunch-Cook, and John Lemule's father Benjamin Franklin Cook who married Martha Jane Vaughn.  There may be information about them in the documents still waiting for transcription.  I am sure others are hopeful for information about their ancestors too!

I am in possession of an original handwritten document written in the old style, with decorations, in black ink, by Phebe Bernard. On the document she lists her "new" husband, George W. C. Nixon, b 12/7/1817, herself born 1/21/1820, and their children:
Joseph F. b 9/18/1837
Mary Elizabeth b 12/18/1839
Martha K. b 4/20/1842
Nancy Isabelle b 11/7/1845
Gabriella Hanah b 4/24/1847
James Baker b 7/28/1849

It would be interesting to know whether descendants are still living in Franklin Co., Arkansas, or anywhere in the state for that matter. Also, am wondering what the connection to my family (Nixon) might be.

I read a file indicating Mary  Jane Ellis  b. 1867 had married Alexander
Shreeves.  The children listed are: Dan,  Lula, Ethel, Fanny, Alice,
Jesse, & Jackson.  I'm searching for confirmation of the marriages, and
any information related to the children and/or ancestors.

Mary Jane born about 1867 is the daughter of William J. Ellis and
Matilda Jane Cook, who were married about 1860.  William & Matilda lived
in Clear Creek township of  Washington County, and moved to War Eagle
township of Madison County before 1880.  Matilda is daughter of  Thomas
and Siney Cook.  William's parents were Joshua C Ellis and Sarah E
Kelly, who moved from Georgia to Arkansas about 1858.

Other children of William and Matilda [COOK] ELLIS include:  Elizabeth

Mollie was Elizabeth's daughter by John D. Buchanan, I have pictures of the
stone sent to me by a cousin in Ark.
Mollie was 1/2 sister to my husbands Grandmother Emma Rush. I don't know if
Elizabeth and John ever actually
got married, they were in Fannin Co., Ga. before going to Ark. Elizabeth's
husband George Rush just disappeared
and was never heard of again. I guess Elizabeth then left with John Buchanan
for Ark. I am trying to show that
Elizabeth Buchanan and Elizabeth Ralston are the same,  Elizabeth died
20-Aug 1931 Denning, Ark. and is buried
at Nichols Chapel Cem. Altus, Ark. If any one is interested I have
information I gathered in Fannin Co., Ga. on
the Ralstons while I was there this summer.

Jean, can you share with us why you think Elizabeth lived in Franklin
County AR?  I show no marriages for any female Ralston at all in Franklin
from 1850 to 1916.  Also the only two female Buchanan marriages in this
time period were Mollie and Nancy.

These are photos of two Conatser brothers.  First is James Jerry

buried in Gar Creek Cemetery north of Ozark.  The other photo, given to
us by Brian Sherrod, is Christopher Columbus "Lum" Conatser and his
wife, Mary Belle Gray Conatser.  Lum was born November 22, 1860 and died

Greetings,

I am on a quest to find information on Asbery and Hettie Conatser.

My husband is descended from the Conatser family of Pike County, Arkansas.  I feel that I have exhausted all possibilities; however, I just found a new clue.  There is a Hettie McFadden Conatser, wife of J. A. Conatser buried in the Delight Cemetery in Delight, Arkansas.

William (Bill) P. Conatser had four sons.  One of those sons was James/John Alexander Conatser born in 1859.  Asbery Conatser was born in December 1859.  Could they be the same person?
What do you think?

God bless America.
Susie

This is a photo of Sarah Clementine Hood (Mrs. John Elliott) CONATSER,
her daughter, Willie Clementine "Clemma" Conatser (Mrs. Gene) ADAMS, and
Clemma's son, Billy Gene Adams.  The photo was taken about 1930.  Sarah
and Clemma are buried in Highland Cemetery in Ozark.  Bill died in 1984
and is buried in California.
