Lee County, Arkansas Cemeteries

Rehobeth Cemetery

Vineyard/Rondo, Arkansas

Location: Rehobeth is located in Phillips County, Arkansas, about a mile from the line between Lee and Phillips Counties.  It is about two miles southwest of Rondo, Arkansas.  Rondo is about 12 miles southeast of Marianna.  From Rondo, take Hwy 316 south to PC104.  Follow the gravel road around several curves until you see the old church building on the right surrounded by an iron fence.  This cemetery is very over-grown and is not currently being maintained.  Below are the names and dates that I recorded from visible markers on May 30, 2004.  There are many, many visible graves with no markers.  Special thanks to Sharon Peterson for sending pictures and sparking my interest in this old cemetery.  Click here for a picture of the gate and church.

For more information on the history of Rehobeth Baptist Church, see Zora Langston Atkinson’s article “Rehobeth Church” in the December, 1965, issue of the Phillips County Historical Quarterly, Vol. 4, No. 2.  According to Mrs. Atkinson, all of the burial markers have been removed from graves located within thirty feet of each side of the church.

Barbara Stainback has also requested that if any further information on this cemetery is found please contact her personally.  Most of the people are her relations.  If anyone has older pictures of how it used to look, please send those as well.

Phil Rial has submitted some history on the church, the cemetery, and some of the people associated with them.  There is a note below on the PAYNE family and you can also click here to read additional information from Phil.

If you know of anyone else buried here, and would like to add their name, please contact me.  I can also create a link for you to any of these names if you find someone that belongs to your family.  The information presented is as correct as possible, however you may want to verify its accurateness.

(Note submitted June 18, 2005 by Phil Rial: These are my maternal grandparents and my young uncle.  They were killed in an automobile accident on Highway 1 South between Lexa and Barton.  I was born two years after this accident, but I well remember my mother talking about this.  My mother and her other siblings were in school in Rondo and thus were spared.  Franklin Ross Payne was my mother’s little brother and he had not yet started school.  My mother’s little sister Betty Sue Payne was in the car also and survived the accident, with major injuries.  She died some years later from Parkinsons, and other complications presumably from the accident.  I understand she had head injuries and multiple broken bones.)
