I (Marilyn Hambrick Sickel) was unable to locate any information regarding the origins of this cemetery. However, I was told an interesting tale concerning the marker for the "unknown dead".

"Way back," a man was riding through this area with several other men. He was ill and the rest of the men left him behind. Several local men later caught up with this group of men to ask what name to put on the tombstone and the group of men replied, "We don't know who he is." A marker was placed on this man's grave and the words, "Unknown Dead" were inscribed.

A Nazarene Church preceded the present day Johnson Chapel Methodist Church.
