OBITUARIES

PAULINE BRAMLETT, of Pocahontas, died August 24, 1999, at the Beverly Health Care Center in Jonesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Bramlett. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

PHARUS LEVI FORRESTER, 82, of Jonesboro, died Aug. 24, 1999, at St. Bernards Retional Medical Center there. Born at Birdell, he resided in Jonesboro most of his life. He is survived by his wife, Susan Forrester and is buried in Linwood Cemetery near Paragould.

DAVID NORMAN EARLY, 86, of Pocahontas, died Aug. 26, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center in Little Rock. Born Nov. 30, 1912 at Hamil, he was a son of the late James and Tersey (Upshaw) Early. He was a veteran of WWII and is buried in Spikes Cemetery near Ingram, with a VFW Honor Guard graveside military service.

JOHN C. WYATT, 72, of St. Louis, MO, died Aug. 23, 1999. He was born in Sikeston, MO, Dec. 7, 1926, a son of the late Clarence and Maggie Johnson Wyatt. He was a WWII Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Adell Songer Wyatt and is buried in Ingram Cemetery.

JOE H. ELKINS died Aug. 19, 1999. He was a son of the late Harvey L. and Clara B. Elkins. He is survived by his wife, Etta. Services were held in Bonne Terre, MO., and interment was Aug. 23 in St. Louis.

W. HOMER CALLAHAN, 95, of Walnut Ridge, a former long-time resident of Clover Bend, died Aug. 23, 1999, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Walnut Ridge. He was born Jan 6, 1904, in Strawberry, the son of the late John and Viola (Doyle) Callahan. He was united in marriage to Lillie Robins on Oct. 10, 1923 in Clover. She preceded him in death in Dec. 1983. He is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery.

BURKE BENN ULIBARRI, 46, of Imboden, died Aug. 24, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born Dec. 8, 1952 in Fairbanks, Alaska, a son of Joseph Thomas Sr. and Yolanda Elizabeth (Wallner) Ulibarri, both of Phoenix. He is also survived by his wife, Deborah Waters Ulibarri. He is buried in Rest Haven Cemetery near Glendale, Ariz.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Pvt. Ferrell James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Yule James of Ravenden, is now stationed in South Korea with the 434th Construction Engineer Battalion Headquarters and Service Co... Pfc. Scrivner Hugh Ennis spent the weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnston, and other relatives and friends. Ennis is stationed at the Maxton AFB, Maxton, NC... Harold Friend, fireman USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Friend of Pocahontas, is serving with United Nations forces in the Korea area aboard the destroyer USS Perkins.

Mrs. Nora Johnson DuBois, aged 80, wife of J.A. DuBois of Dalton, died in Randolph County Memorial Hospital on Aug. 27.

Mrs. Geneva Massey Hill has received word from her husband that he is now in Korea.---Lorine News.

Dale Hufstedler and Carl Brown have been stripping sorghum cane for a man at Cedar Ridge. --- Noland News.

Roy Foster suffered injury to an arm and hand while bailing hay Tuesday. --- Richardson News.

Little 9-year-old Mary Nell Hackworth has been very ill with polio and meningitis in a Paragould hospital for three weeks. She is now able to be home. ---Vallen Chapel News.

Judge Million and Engineer Joe Barden were in Middlebrook to begin the new bridge over Fource, located at the Phipps Ford.

Elmer Driskill of Ingram was thrown from a wagon load of hay near Hamil. The front wheel passed over his right leg and chest.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Sular Mondy of Manson, on Sept. 4, a girl.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Major Christian on Sept. 6, a boy.

Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Barthel announce the arrival of a daughter Aug. 29, christen Mary Frances.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Cagle of Running Lake, a boy on Aug. 22.

Mr. and Mrs. Mose King of Old Union were the parents of a baby girl, born August 28.

WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT DIES
DR. WILLIAM ERNEST (BILL) BATES, 93, one of the oldest surviving native-born Randolph Countians and one of its most well-known residents, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 at the Randolph County Medical Center. Dr. Bates was a retired veterinarian and cattle farmer. He was appointed to two terms by Gov. Bill Clinton to the Arkansas State Veterinarian Examining Board, served as president on the Randolph County Fair Association Board, president of the Randolph County Saddle club, member of the Pocahontas School Board and a member of the Northeast Arkansas Planning Club. Dr. Bates was the son of the late Daniel Vorhees Bates and Mary Lou Hancock Bates. Dr. Bates is survived by his wife, Dorothy Keith Bates; one adopted nephew, Gary D. Gazaway; one brother, Paul Dean Bates of Pine Bluff; and one sister, Hazel Shivley of Houston, Texas. Funeral services for Dr. Bates will be 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10, 1999 at First United Methodist Church, Pocahontas with Steve Wingo officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery, Pocahontas. Visitation will be Thursday (today) Sept. 9, 1999, 4 to 8 p.m. at McNabb Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers a memorial may be sent to First United Methodist Church.

OBITUARIES

PAULINE PRATT WISNER, 87, of Pocahontas, died Aug 31, 1999, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in North Little Rock. She was born Oct. 11, 1911, near Shannon, the daughter of the late Jarman and Gertrude B. (Waldron) Brown. She is buried in Masonic Cemetary.

HAZEL PAULINE (STRANGE) RADCLIFF, 82, of Jonesboro, died Sept. 3, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 17, 1916 near Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the late William David and Sadie P. (Hall) Strange. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Everett L. Radcliff, and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

JESSIE BLACK, 91, of Pocahontas, died Aug. 31, 1999, at Randolph Home. Born Dec. 17, 1907, near O'Kean, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Alice D. (Campbell) Ford. Her husband, J. M. Dowell Black also preceded her in death. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

MARY ALICE POPE, 86, of Pocahontas, died Aug. 29, 1999 at Hendersonville (TN) Memorial Hospital. She was born April 7, 1913 near Van Buren, a daughter of the late Wallace and Anna Belle (Eichelberger) O'Bryan. Her husband, Charles Everett Pope, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

BILLY JOE WHITMIRE, 67, a resident of Walnut Ridge, formerly of Clarkston, Mich., died Sept. 4, 1999, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center in Walnut Ridge. He was born Feb. 15, 1932 in Walnut Ridge, a son of the late Jesse and Velma (Mosier) Whitmire. He was married to the former Lily Lamb on Jan. 26, 1952 in Walnut Ridge, who survives him. He is buried in Manning Cemetery near Sedgwick.

I.D. SHEPHERD, 79, of Maynard, died Sept. 3, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born June 7, 1920 near Supply, he was a son of the late Ira Jackson and Ella Christine (Redwine) Shepherd. He was a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Pat Orum Shepherd and is buried in Ingram Cemetery.

MAY JOYCE REDWINE, 90, of Maynard, died Sept. 4, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Memphis, a daughter of the late Wilson Dewitt and Minnie Lee Province Early. Her husband, Charles Redwine, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

Men in Service... Airman James M. Patrick, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Patrick of Rt. 3, Pocahontas, has been selected for technical training in the U.S. Air Force Armament systems field at Keesler AFB, Miss. Airman Patrick is a 1975 graduate of Pocahontas High School... Airman William S. Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Gordon of Rt. 1, Imboden, has graduated at Sheppard AFB, Texas, from the U.S. Air Force accounting specialist course conducted yb the Air Training Command. Airman Gordon is a 1973 graudate of Sloan-Hendrix High School.

NEWS FROM MEN IN SERVICE...The local draft board forwarded three examined and accepted registrants to Little Rock this morning for induction into the armed forces. They were: Charles Warren Lindsey, Middlebrook; John D. Castile, Rt. 2, Pocahontas; and Billy Jack Barnes, Rt. 1, Biggers... Pvt. Jesse L. Ewing, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Ewing of Maynard, is now stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. His parents and brothers and Miss Wanda Ann Roberts spent the weekend with him at his camp... Carl Haynes, Seaman USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Haynes of Rt. 1, Delaplaine, is serving with the Fleet All Weather Training Unit, Pacific... Pfc. Bryan Gene Johnson left Tuesday for Camp Atterbury, Ind., after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thero Johnson and other relatives... Mr. and Mrs. Joe Divani have received word from their son, Pvt. Harold S. Difani, that he is now stationed at Seoul, Korea... Pfc. Jimmy Black left Tuesday to report to the Craig Air Force Base, Selma, Ala., following a two-weeks' furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Black and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Malissa Evelyn Davis, aged 66, of Maynard, died in Randolph County Hospital Sept. 6.

Mrs. Josephine Tribble, aged 34, wife of Jess Tribble, died at their home in Pocahontas, Sept. 10.

J. A. DuBois, aged 81, well-known farmer of new Dalton, died at the home of his son, Elmer, Wednesday, Sept. 5, following a short illness. Mr. DuBois' wife passed away only ten days previously.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from files of Sept. 15, 1927
Lewis Dalton, son of Rep. and Mrs. E. Dalton of Pocahontas, ahd a narrow escape from death or serious injury in an attempted holdup near Koshkonong, MO. He was en route to his home here from Fort Smith, when two men with pistols shot at his car. Mr. Dalton notified officers of the occurence when he reached Thayer.

"Aunt Net" Coleman, colored, who claims to be near the 100 year mark is said to be cutting a new set of teeth.

Born Sept. 9, to Mr. and Mrs. George Kincade at Old Jackson, a 9-pound girl.

OBITUARIES

MARIE CATHERINE CLARK, 88, of Pocahontas, died Sept. 12, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Sept. 1, 1911, near Reyno, a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Eliza (Short) Barr. She was first married to the late William D. Murphy Sr. for 53 years. She later married the late Crondell H. Clark of Van Buren, MO. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

Dr. W. E. (Bill) Bates died Sept. 7, 1999 at Randolph County Medical Center. He is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

CORA MILLIGAN, 88, of Walnut Ridge, died Sept. 7, 1999, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center there. She was born Feb. 24, 1911 in Shelbyville, a daughter of the late Lum and Macy (Dement) McGinnis. She was married to Paul Milligan on Oct. 23, 1926, in Strawberry. She is buried at Milligan Camp Ground near Strawberry.

JAMES LOFTUS COLLAMORE, JR., 76, of Malvern, died Sept. 8, at his home. He was born Nov. 4, 1922 at Little Rock to the late James L. Sr. and Alma Louise Engle Collamore. He served in the U.S Navy and Merchant Marines during WWII. On May 21, 1950, he and Elizabeth Stewart were married. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 1985. He is buried in Clear Creek Cemetery.

HENRY CLAYTON "HANK" OXFORD, JR., 54 of Waterloo, Ala., died Sept. 9, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Oxford. Greenview Funeral Home of Florence was in charge of arrangements.

CARL FRANK McILROY, 82, of Paragould, died Sept. 10, 1999, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital there. He was born Nov. 8, 1916 in Pocahontas, a son of the late Frank and Mertie (Pruitt) McIlroy. He was a veteran of WWII. His first wife, Marie McIlroy, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Max Lee McIlroy and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

ALBERTA MILLER, 77, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Sept. 8, 1999, at Harbor House Hospice there. She was born July 3, 1922, in Desloge, Mo., a daughter of the late Paul R. and Myrtle (Robb) Davis. She is survived by her husband, Richard Harold Miller of Las Vegas, and is buried in Gravesville Cemetery.

THOMAS O. "TOM" MARTIN, 79, of Vandalia, Ill., died Sept. 4, 1999, in Vandalia. He was born March 2, 1920 in O'Kean, a son of the late John Oscar and Rosa (Etchason) Martin. He is survived by his wife, Ruby, and is buried in Vandalia.

VELMA LORRAINE PRATT, 89, of Valencia, Calif., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, there. She was a retired school teacher for the Pocahontas School District, a daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin and Katie Ann (Michael) Allbright. Her husband, Price Lafayette Pratt, preceded her in death on March 20, 1975. Survivors are a daughter, Phyllis Walker of Canyon Country, Calif.; two grandsons, Steven Walker of Arizona and Ken Walker of Oregon. Graveside services were held Saturday at Pirtle Cemetery near Peach Orchard under direction of Ermert Funeral Home of Corning.

MEN IN SERVICE... Two sons of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Dunn of Pocahontas are proving to be valuable assets to the Army Air Force and the U.S. Navy. Staff Sgt. James L. Dunn, 21, who entered the Air Force 3 1/2 years ago, has been with a medical group at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, Texas, for more than two years and was promoted to his present rank last week. L. E. Dunn Jr., 18, a 1951 graduate of PHS, left for the navy on May 19, the day following his graduation and is now attending mechanical air school at Jacksonville, Florida... Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Baltz have received word from their son, Pfc. Bernard Baltz, stating that he is now in Yokohama, Japan, and is located in the administrative office there... Mrs. Harris Cathey met her husband, Capt. Cathey, in Memphis Saturday where he arrived after having been in Korea for a year.

Mrs. Julia Rogers, 88, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F.E. Mock at Biggers, Sunday.

Myrtle Shockley, 40-year-old colored woman, died at her home at Birdell Sept. 10.

Mrs. Catherine Frangenberg DeClerk, aged 74, wife of Ben DeClerk, died at their home in Pocahontas Friday.

Mrs. Octava Josephine Price passed away at the family home at Calamine Saturday.

Pfc. Grover M. Barham, son of Mrs. Ruth Barham of O'Kean, is now stationed on the U.S.S. Iowa, the largest man-o-war in the world and is scheduled to sail soon to Honolulu and Pearl Harbor.

Cpl. John F. Reed of Biggers recently arrived in the far East and is stationed in Korea.

Pfc. Henry W. Davis recently graduated from the Army Leader School with the 5th Armored Division.

James Weatherford is enjoying a 20-day leave with his family at Attica.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from files of Sept. 22, 1927
The new, $4,000 two-teacher school building at O'Kean has been completed and regular classwork began in the building Monday. This is probably the best two-teacher school in Randolph County.

Pocahontas Public and High Schools opened Monday with the largest enrollment on record. The enrollment up to today has reached 450.

Funeral services for former Governor George W. Hays, aged 64, who died at the family home in Little Rock, were held at Camden, his former home.

Alfred Paine, 67, died at the home of a daughter in Tyronza Sept. 9.

Walter Crismon died at the home of his father in Maynard, Sept. 16.

Pauline Fisher, a sixth-grade student at Gum Stump, died Sept. 8 after a short illness.

SHIRLEY LOUISE HAWTHORNE KOCIAN, 64, of Austin, Texas, died September 14, 1999. She was a daughter of the late Bill and Thelma Batey. Her husband, Thomas Wendell Hawthorne, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Gravesville Cemetery.

WILCIE LAMB EADES, 73, of Lawrence Hall Nursing Home in Walnut Ridge, died September 18, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was born Feb. 1, 1926 in Bay, a daughter of Joe and Mary (Simpson) Riley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sethly Floyd (Shorty) Lamb and her parents and is buried in Manning Cemetery No. 2.

MINNIE UTAWN CLEMENTS, 73, of Ravenden, died September 18, 1999, at her residence following a short illness. Born September 28, 1925, at Hobart, Okla., she was a daughter of Sam and Dixie Emily Vicars Middleton. She was married to Buster Homer Clements on January 28, 1969, and he preceded her in death in 1984. She is buried in Friendship Cemetery in the Friendship community near Annieville.

VELMA L. PRATT - Funeral services for Velma Lorraine Pratt of Valencia, Calif. were held Saturday, September 18, 1999, not Sept. 11, 1999, as was reported in last week's Star Herald.

BEATRICE MADDEN, 78, of Walnut Ridge, died Sept. 12, 1999, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Born in Jackson County, she moved to Walnut Ridge from Newport in 1976. She is buried in Lawrence Memorial Park.

HENRY ODELL DAVIDSON, 69, of Pocahontas, formerly of Gideon, Mo., died September 16, 1999, at Randolph County Hospital. Born April 30, 1930, near Leachville, he was a son of Velma Johnson Davidson of Gideon, and the late Zollie Davidson. He is survived by his wife, Doris Davidson, and is buried in Stanfield Cemetery in Clarkton, Mo.

PAUL JAMES RICHARDSON, 76, of Swifton, died September 18, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born January 21, 1923, in Swifton, a son of the late Don and Nellie (Riley) Richardson. He was married to the former Ruby Montgomery on Sept. 18, 1947 in Newport. He is buried in Haynes Cemetery in Swifton.

LONNIE W. MIZE, 83, of Cayucos, Calif., died September 9, 1999, in his home after a battle with cancer. He was born April 6, 1916, in West Blocton, Ala., to Burl J. and Janie Stocks Mize. He was a WWII Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Autrey Mize of Cayucos (and was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Mize, and his parents).

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Lee Rapert of Maynard has received a telegram and a letter stating that his son, Cpl. Seldon R. Rapert, had been wounded by enemy machine gun fire in Korea on Sept. 9, and is now in a hospital in Japan and will be sent from there to the States. --- Pfc. Ray Coleman Snodgrass and Pfc. Francis Shieder, who are stationed at Memphis, Tenn., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Snodgrass and family. --- Pfc. Duel Camp recently reported to Central Illinois Air Base to attend a 16-week course for weather observers. --- Pfc. Robert Davis of Pocahontas recently arrived in the Far East and has been assigned to the Fifth Air Force in Korea.

Hiram Bounds, aged 81, of Ravenden Springs, died at his home there Sunday night.

Elisha Walter Brown, aged 67, a well-known farmer of Ravenden Springs, died in Randolph County Hospital Wednesday night.

Mrs. Ella Lucille Brown Childs, aged 48, wife of Lester Childs, died in Randolph County Hospital here Monday.

Charley Calvin Justice, aged 81, died at his home in Pocahontas Friday.

The long needed bridge across Mud Creek at the John Price farm is being built and will be a great blessing. Another bridge is needed at the old Mock place on the Pocahontas Warm Springs road. --- Ingram News.

Dr. L. R. pace reported the birth of two babies at Noland. A baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Penn on Friday night and a baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Leathers on Tuesday night.

HISTORY OF KILO VISTA SITE TO BE COMPILED
A history of the kilo Vista/Birdell Grist and Cotton Gin Site is being prepared by Kilo
Vista Historical Committee. The committee is in need of ictures, newspaper story and those who would be willing to tell their story about the old pre-Civil War site, in operation and the people who lived and worked in the area back then. MELBA JANE WHITE, 65, of Pocahontas, died Sept. 27, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. She was born Dec. 10, 1933 at Ravenden Springs, a daughter of the late Charles McElroy and Lessie (Marriott) McElroy. She is survived by her husband, Willis Clifford White and is buried at Masonic Cemetery.

RADFORD BUNNELL, 78, of Ravenden, died Sept. 21, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. Born Sept. 16, 1921, near Dyersburg, Tenn., he was a son of the late T. N. and Lee (Parker) Bunnell. He was a veteran of WWII and is buried at Yadkin Cemetery.

ILINE PARTEN, 77, of Pocahontas, died Sept. 23, 1999, in St. Louis. She was born June 8, 1922, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Ed and Mandy (McDonald) Spradlin. Her husband, Edmond O. Parten, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

DENNIS K. LUCY, 47, of Pocahontas, died Sept. 20, 1999, at his home. Born in Tuckerman on Dec. 18, 1951, he was a son of Carmel (Wheeler) Lucy and the late Kenneth Robert Lucy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Kay (Nelson) Lucy, who passed away April 8, 1994. He is buried in Heber Springs Cemetery.

Ray Davis of Rt. 2 was in the office last of the week and reported that his neighbor, Rector Pace, has a full grown watermelon growing atop his woodpile. The vine started near the wood pile and fingered its way up between the wood and Rector let it be just to see how well it would grow. The melon will likely be plucked this week and sampled for flavor. - - HERE

HERBERT E. CASSIDY, 74, of Pocahontas, died Sept. 27, 1999, at his residence. He was born August 17, 1925, in Walnut Ridge, a son of the late Thomas Cleo and Oma Ann (Pickett) Cassidy. He was a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Brown, and is buried in Jarrett Cemetery near Maynard.

ARTHUR SCOTT SIFFORD, 41, of Pocahontas, died Sept. 28, 1999, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center. He was born July 25, 1958, in Pocahontas, a son of Marlene (Lance) Sifford of Pocahontas and the late Arthur S. Sifford. He is also survived by his stepfather, John Hart, and is buried in Hope Cemetery.

CARL S. FOWLER, 71, of Viloa, Ill., died in St. Francis Hospital, Litchfield, Ill., Sept. 27, 1999. He was born June 20, 1928, near Brockett, a son of the late Robert and Anna Mack Fowler. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy-WWII and is survived by his wife, Flo E. Warnell Fowler. He is buried in Viola Cemetery there.

MILDRED MAE LEE, 73, of Corning, died at Randolph County Medical Center, October 2, 1999. She was born Feb. 18, 1926, near Monette, a daughter of the late Robert (R.H.) and Cleather Shrout Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl William Lee and is buried in Corning Cemetery.

GEORGE B. WHEATON, 69, of Ravenden Springs, died Oct. 4, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. He was born in Erin, N.Y.,, but has lived in Ravenden Springs for the past 11 years. He was an Army and Air Force Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Connie Bradley Wheaton and is buried in Janes Cemetery near Ravenden Springs.

MARGARET FRANCES MARLETT, 70, of West Marsville, Ind., died Oct. 1, 1999 at Medical Center of Southern Indiana, Charleston. She was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Atlanta, GA., a daughter of the late Steve and Mattie Sue (Patman) Pavlock. She is survived by her husband, Joseph "Jake" Marlett and is buried in Dalton Cemetery, at Old Burr.

President of Local Industry is Killed.... James R. Sulentic, president of Waterloo Industries, Inc., was killed Saturday afternoon near Waterloo, Iowa, when his WWII plane crashed in an open field. Mr. Sulentic had been vice president of sales, and executive vice president of Waterloo Industries before his election last week to the presidency.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE.... Word has been received here that Sgt. Kenneth Dee Murphy, son of Clayd Murphy of near Warm Springs and Eva Murphy of St. Louis, was killed in action in Korea on Sept. 3. --- The local Draft Board forwarded Dewey Lee Crapo of Rt. 1, and J.L. Wright of Warm Springs, to Little Rock this morning for induction into the U.S. Army. --- Sgt. Roland Mariott is on furlough and is visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Mariott and other relatives at Ravenden Springs. --- Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Williams of Middlebrook have received word that their son, Pfc. Robert Williams, is receiving treatment in an Army hospital in Fort Sam Houston, TX. He was sent overseas in July and served two and a half months on the front lines in Korea. --- Pfc. Doyle McKinney of Rt. 1, Walnut Ridge, graduated this week from the Air Force Communication School at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell McKinney and graduated from Delaplaine High School.

Robert Lee Higginbotham, aged 75, died Tuesday at Randolph County Hospital.

John W. Moss, aged 79, former Randolph County farmer, died at the home of his daughter in Ferndale, Mich.

Mrs. William Wofford, 33, wife of the Pocahontas manager of the Fort Smith Gas Corp., suffered fatal injuries later Saturday afternoon when the automobile in which she was riding was involved in a crash a few miles north of Little Rock on Hwy. 67.

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture reports there were 2,994 farms in Randolph County, according to the 1925 Census of Agriculture. The farm population was 12,746 including 5,592 people who lived on their own farms. The report further stated there were 2,681 horses and mules on county farms, 1,045 beef cattle, 1,687 dairy cows, 180 sheep, 55 goats, 2,129 swine and 2,624 chickens.

TOLA HITE COX, 96, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 6, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Jan 6, 1903, near Biggers, a daughter of the late Harry and Tommie (Wells ) Hite. Her husband, E.C. "Clem" Cox, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

LEO "SQUARE" TRIBBLE, 79, of Walnut Ridge, died Oct. 8, 1999. He was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Walnut Ridge, a son of the late Robert and Mary Gipson Tribble. His first wife, Ina Tribble, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Kathern Tribble, and is buried in Chesser Cemetery.

LIZZIE M. FOSTER, 81, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 5, 1999. She was born near Bono, July 11, 1918, a daughter of the late Luther and Lula Gage. She is buried in Chart Oak Cemetery near Ravenden Springs.

GLENNA OVELLA SNOW, 86, a resident of Lawrence Hall Nursing Center of Walnut Ridge, died Oct. 10, 1999, at her residence. She was born Sept. 10, 1913, in Lawrence County, a daughter of L.W. and Francis Malessie (Minton) Snow. She is buried in Snow Cemetery in Walnut Ridge.

JOSEPH JOHN KNOWLES, SR., 82, of Joplin, Mo., died Oct. 9, 1999, at St. Johh's Regional Medical Center, after an illness. He was born Feb. 7, 1917 near Success and lived in Joplin since 1994, moving from Pocahontas. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the European Theatre. He is buried in Hitt Cemetery near Success.

KATIE BROWN, 88, of Starkville, Miss., a former resident of Pocahontas, died Oct. 11, 1999, at Scribner's Personal Care Home in Starkville. A public school teacher in the Pocahontas Schools, she was born in St. Louis. Her husband, Edgar Brown, preceded her in death. She is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

JOHN HALL BOATNER, 86, of Powhatan, died Oct. 10, 1999, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Walnut Ridge. He was born May 19, 1913, in Pocahontas, a son of the late John Walter and Emily (Holder) Boatner. He is survived by his wife, Vera Boatner and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

CLEATUS NORMAN BROWN, 83, of Bono, died Oct. 8, 1999, at Randolph Home. He was born April 4, 1916, a son of the late Henry Robert and Dorothy Elizabeth (Johnson) Brown. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Velma Brown, and is buried in Stubblefield Cemetery.

HELEN MARIE FARROW, 63, of West Plains, Mo., died Oct. 6, 1999, at St. John's Hosptial in Springfield, Mo. Born FEb. 25, 1936, in Greer, Mo., she was a daughter of the late George Millard (Huff) and Oral Bell Sisk. Her husband, Porter Farrow, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Bailey Cemetery near Alton, Mo.

THELMA JOHNSTON PURDY, 80, of Springtown, Tx, formerly of Randolph County, died Sept. 21, 1999, there. She was born Nov. 1, 1918, in Biggers, a daughter of the late Redden and Sally Johnston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Purdy. She is buried in Nacodoches, Texas.

William Thomas Stubblefield, 75, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. W.M. Bennett of Biggers, October 12.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from files of Oct. 18, 1927
Mrs. Ed Wallace, aged about 30, of Old Union was killed and three others injured when the auto in which they were riding overturned while descending a hill on the Pocahontas-Birdell highway. Injured were Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Hufstedler and Sam Hufstedler.

Otis Mock and his mother, who live at Ingram, had a narrow escape from serious injuries when their team backed off the Norris bridge and into the ravine which the bridge spans.

LOUISE TAYLOR, 67, of Corning, died at her home Oct. 12, 1999. She was born March 27, 1932 in Oregon County, Ala., and has resided in Corning for three years, having moved there from Randolph County. On Jan. 18, 1957, she married Harold Taylor, who survives her. She is buried in Northside Cemetery in Maynard.

VIRGIE DORIS WOLVERTON MILLER, 72, a resident of Randolph County Nursing Home, died Oct. 12, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born Aug. 17, 1927 in Jackson, Tenn., she was a daughter of Robert and Daisy (Rushing) Briley. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John M. Wolverton and Charles M. Miller. She is buried in Chesser Cemetery near Pocahontas.

JAMES CLYDE CROOM, 88, formerly of Jonesboro and Cave City, died in Sharp County Nursing Home, in Sidney last week. He was born June 23, 1911 in Nelsonville. He is survived by his wife, Lois Nuckols Croom of the Sharp County Nursing Home, and is buried in Dry Creek Cemetery at Lynn.

CHARLENE LEWIS, 65, of San Diego, Calif., a former resident of Randolph County, died Oct. 12, 1999, in Mission Bay Hospital, Mission Bay, Calif. She was born June 6, 1934, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Robert Leo and Dorothy Donivee (Kidd) Lewis. She is buried in Palestine Cemetery.

JAMES J. WADDLE, 74, of Rockford, Ill., died Oct. 11, 1999, at his residence. Born May 21, 1925 in Biggers, he was a son of the late Jack and Minnie Waddle. He was a veteran of WWII and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

JOHN GILBERT, 45, of Millbrook, Ala., died Oct. 15, 1999, at Baptist Hospital in Prattsville, Ala. Born Oct. 15, 1999, he was a son of Eileen (Ingram) Gilbert of Pocahontas and the late Glen T. Gilbert.

DANIELLE M. REED, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Reed of Hollywood, Fla., died Oct. 3, 1999, in Miami children's Hospital. She was born March 5, 1999. She is also survived by grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Reed of Indiana, Sue and Harry Waggoner and Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Waggoner of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Pocahontas, and great grandmother, Joann Garner of Arroyo Grande, Calif., formerly of Randolph County.

Frank Dalton, 77, died at his home near Dalton Oct. 17.

Jasper Lynxwiler, 67, died at his home near Warm Springs, Saturday.

Charles W. Clayton, 80, of Ravenden, died in St. Louis, Oct. 22.

Jack Nichols, who was stationed aboard the USS Navasota near Japan and Korea for the past 18 months, is visiting in Pocahontas with his wife, Mrs. Ladell Nichols, and small daughter, Jackie Lou.

Freda Cox had the misfortune of overturning his tractor Monday. The machine fell on him and banged him up considerably.

LETTA REED CLAUDE, 90, of Imboden, died Oct. 21, 1999. She was born March 15, 1909, a daughter of the late Enoch and Mary David Reed. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Claude and is buried in Hope Cemetery at Imboden.

MARIE LOVIS TURNER POSEY, 88, formerly of Annieville and smithville, near Imboden, died Oct. 11, 1999, at the Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Austinburg, Ohio. She was born May 14, 1911 in Ravenden Springs to Stariet and Lula Bailey Harrison. She was married to William Turner and later to Charles J. Posey. She is buried in Yadkin Cemetery near Ravenden Springs.

AGNES FAYE (HOLDEMAN) WHITE, 76, a resident of Powhatan, died Oct. 25, 1999 at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born July 19, 1923 in Black Rock, she was a daughter of Roy and Hattie (Miller) Holdeman. She married Dent White on April 17, 1954, who survives her. She is buried in Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock.

ANNIE IRENE TRIBBLE, 98, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 25, 1999, at Clay County Health Care. Born Feb. 4, 1901, in the Manson Community, she was a daughter of the late K. and Martha (Hayes) Davis. Her husband, William Eugene Tribble, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

CLEVA JEAN (COOK) MONTGOMERY, 67, of Newport, died Oct. 25, 1999, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock. She was born March 16, 1932, at Dalton, a daughter of the late James Franklin and Addie Cook. She is survived by her husband, James Blanton Montgomery and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Newport.

King, machinist's mate second class, USN, husband of Mrs. Kathleen King of Pocahontas, is serving aboard the destroyer USS Black, which plays a prominent role in Columbia Studio's forthcoming film release of "Battle Stations", starring Pat O'Brien, which depicts the struggle for control of Okinawa.

Mrs. Lillie Jones, 55 of Route One, Pocahontas, died in a Little Rock Hospital Tuesday.

The State Highway Commission at its meeting in Little Rock Friday awarded the contract for paving 8 miles of Highway No. 67 north of Pocahontas.

Ben Frankenberger returned to his home here from Olathe, Kansas, where he had been working.

LUCILLE V. MOORE, a resident of Noland community from 1959 until 1968, died Oct. 17, 1999, at her home in the Fairplain community at Benton Harbor, Mich. She was born Sept. 29, 1930, in Alicia, a daughter of the late Elmer and Ola Williams of Alicia. She is survived by her husband, Reggie Moore, who she married Jan. 15, 1950, in Walnut Ridge. She is buried in Hartford, Mich.

CECIL CHARLIE THATCH, 85, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 31, 1999, at Randolph Home. He was born Nov. 26, 1913, near Fender, a son of the late John William and Ada (Fisher) Thatch. He is survived by his wife, Alous Vandergriff Thatch, and is buried in Wells Cemetery near Dalton.

THOMAS "TOM" BENTON WARD, 58, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 31, 1999. He was born in Pocahontas, March 23, 1941, a son of the late Carl and Ora Warnell Ward. Cox-Waymon Funeral Home handled funeral arrangements; his body was cremated.

VOITTO FRITZOFF JOHNSON, 82, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 29, 1999, at his residence. He was born Feb. 16, 1917 in Wakefield, Mich., a son of the late Charles and Ida (Rengo) Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Edna Drier Johnson. McNabb Funeral Home handled funeral arrangements; his body was cremated.

ELBERT RAY SELLERS, 61, of Jonesboro, formerly of Ravenden, died Oct. 23, 1999, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He is survived by his wife, Alice Perry Sellers and is buried at Hope Cemetery near Imboden.

MURIEL MURPHY, a former resident of Maynard, died in her home in Bradenton, Fla., last week. She was born May 23, 1914, in Oak Hill, a daughter of Oliver and Louella (Britton) Burns. She was married to Verlon Murphy on Oct. 15, 1935 and he preceded her in death. She is buried in Ingram Cemetery near Maynard.

LEROY MILNER, 68, of Ravenden, died Oct. 30, 1999, at his daughter's residence in Lakeland, FL. Born Nov. 22, 1930, at Hickory Plains, he was a son of the late Edward Cheney and Hazel Dean Dearing Milner. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta Baggett Milner and is buried in Hope Cemetery.

JOHN H. BUTTS, 80, a resident of Gassville Nursing Center, formerly of Jonesboro, died Oct. 30, 1999, at the nursing center. He was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Center, the son of Oscar and Ethel (Ratliff) Butts. He was a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Alice Mae Butts and is buried in Chapel Cemetery in Williford.

RUBY DEAN GRIFFIN, 66, of Corning, died Nov. 1, 1999, in St. Bernards Regional Med Center, Jonesboro. She was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Corning, a daughter of the late Obie L. and Ola Mae (Bird) Baker. Her husband, James Burlin Griffin, also preceded her in death on July 20, 1999. She is buried in Corning Cemetery.

GLADYS ANDERSON, 85, of Imboden, died Oct. 31, 1999, at her residence. Born Jan. 31, 1914 in Marlin, Texas, she was a daughter of the late William Murry and Nancy Pearl Cohea Cagle. She is buried in Old Union Cemetery.

NORA BROWN, 80, of Gatewood, MO, died Oct. 25, 1999, at the Current River Nursing Center in Doniphan, MO. She was born July 13, 1919, in Ripley County, MO. She married Henry Brown in 1937 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1985. She is buried in Dalton Cemetery.

JIMMY K. SOTOS, 82, of Bartlett, TN., died Oct, 16, 1999, at his home there. He was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Athens, Greece. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Rasdon Sotos and is buried in Sharum Cemetery.

FAYE MARIE DAVIS, 85, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 28, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Jan. 14, 1914, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Burgess and Millissa (Johnson) James. Her husband, Lute Davis, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Davis Cemetery near Engelberg.

Word was received this week that CHARLES WILLIAMS of Tyler, Texas, died Mo is survived by his wife, Mary Blankenship Williams of Tyler. Funeral and interment were Wednesday in Texas.

MILY MAXINE PERSFULL, 72, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 1, 1999, at her residence. Born Nov. 18, 1926, in Armorel, she was a daughter of the late George Daniel and Ada Elizabeth (Vandergriff) Persfull. She is buried in Sutton Cemetery.

SHIRLEY LaVERNE PERRY, 39, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 26, 1999, at her residence. She was born Dec. 1, 1959, in Little Rock, a daughter of Vernie Hostetler of Kansas City, Kan., and Mona (Anderson) Cook of Memphis. She is buried in Chesser Cemetery.

WILLIAM J. WYLLIE, 90, of Pocahontas, died Oct. 27, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center, Poplar Bluff, MO. He was born April 10, 1909, in Pocahontas, a son of the late Patrick and Mary Theresa (Geiser) Wyllie. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Elizabeth Wyllie, also preceded him in death. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. A rosary service was held Oct. 28 in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Friday morning in St. Paul's Church with Rev. David Jacobs officiating. Burial followed in St. Paul's Cemetery under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Martin Ed, Andrew and Lambert Jansen, Leo Bergman, Andy Fair and Junior Johnston. (Contributed by Bridgette Cohen)

MAN KILLED WHEN AUTO HITS TREE... Clifford Dale Williams, 29, of Walnut Ridge, was killed Sunday when his car went out of control on Arkansas Hwy. 90, eight miles southeast of Pocahontas and hit a tree, State Trooper Weldon Evans said.

MEN IN SERVICE... Army Private Gary A. Gabbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. McDaniel of Rt. 1, Warm Springs, was assigned Oct. 9 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in Co. B of the 5th Infantry Division at Fort Polk, LA. Pvt. Gabbert is a 1972 graduate of Maynard High School and was employed at Cincy Mfg. Co. in Pocahontas before entering the Army.

IRENE HAZEL RAGLIN, 81, OF Pocahontas, died Nov. 3, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Med Center, Jonesboro. She was born Jan. 18, 1918, near O'Kean, a daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Stanley) Bode. Her husband, Paul Raglin, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

KENNETH EDWARD HOOTON, 45, of Reyno, was buried in Maemetery. He was born Dec. 9, 1953, in Pocahontas, a son of Thelma Louise (Babb) Hooton of Garner and the late Ralph Hooton.

HOWARD LAVELLE (FROGGY) JONES, 86, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 4, 1999, in the VA Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born Mar. 26, 1913 in Pocahontas, a son of the late Herbert and Eva (Leonard) Jones. He was a WWII veteran. His wife, Oleta Jones, survives him and he is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

IRENE MAXINE ROBINSON, 80, of Baker City, Ore., died Nov. 2, 1999, in the home of her son, William Farrar of Pocahontas. She was born July 9, 1919, in Bloomington, Kan., a daughter of the late William and Minnie Hall Lewis. She is survived by her husband, Johnny G. Robinson.

ROBERT PAUL NOLTING, 70 , of Imboden, died Nov. 3, 1999, at his home. Born Apr. 3, 1929 in Springfield, MO., he was a son of the late Paul and Nadine Steding Nolting. McNabb Funeral Home handled burial arrangements.

ELSIE LESTER, 87, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 7, 1999. She was born in Iowa, June 14, 1912, and is buried in Gravesville Cemetery.

LEONA WILLIAMS, 87, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 3, 1999. She was born in Lamar, AR, July 6, 1912, a daughter of the late Bob and Lula Williams Rogers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Williams, and is buried in U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.

BRYAN McCALLEN, 86, of Corning, died at Doctor's Regional Med Center, Poplar Bluff, MO, Nov. 4, 1999. He was born Nov. 6, 1912, in Atwood, Ill., a son of the late Manson C. and Ida B. Gillespie McCallen. He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Garland) McCallen and is buried in Corning Cemetery.

DWAYNE A. TYLER, 31, of Belleville, ILL, died Nov. 4, 1999, at Belleville Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 6, 1967, in Granite City, IL, a son of the late Clyde A. Tyler and the late Violet (Keel) Bryant. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda S. Reuter Tyler ans is buried in St. John Cemetery in Granite City.

NOVELLA H. MEEKER PARKER, 96, of Danville, IL, passed away Oct. 19, 1999. She was born Jan 14, 1903, at Ravenden Springs, a daughter of the late Ernest and Birdie Bailey Rice. She married Ernest S. Meeker on Feb. 5, 1920 in Danville, who preceded her in death in 1949. She later married Vernon Parker in 1959 and he preceded her in death in 1967. She is buried in Susnrial Park.

THELMA BOLIN, 76, of Reyno, died Nov. 2, 1999. She was born April 23, 1923, near Monette, a daughter of the late James and Laura McClellan Stone. She is buried at Nelson Cemetery near Reyno.

LILLIE (COSSEY) BROWN, 93, a former resident of Ravenden, died Nov. 3, 1999. Born Aug. 18, 1906 in Charlotte, she was a daughter of Rufus and Martha (Dawson) Cossey. She married Willie J. Brown on Dec. 2, 1928, in Charlotte, who also precedes her in death. She is buried in Opposition Cemetery in Ravenden.

WILLIAM THOMAS "TOMMY" HAND, 83, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 8, 1999, at his residence. He was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Pocahontas, a son of the late Albert and Stella (Shoebart) Hand. He is survived by his wife, Trula Blackwell Hand and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

ALLEN THURMAN WHEELER, JR., 69, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 15, 1999. Born Nov. 12, 1930 near Swifton, he was a son of the late Allen Thurman Sr. and Rosa (Corley) Wheeler. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Toye Wheeler and is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

KIMBERLY LOUISE RUMINER, 36, died Nov. 4, 1999, in Durango, Colo. She was born Aug. 27, 1963, in Kansas City, MO, a daughter of Janice and James Smith of Pagosa Springs, Colo. She is buried in Myrtle Cemetery, Myrtle, MO.

DOROTHY MAE LIEBHABER, 68, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 12, 1999. She was born Dec. 6, 1930, near Dalton, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Julia Frances (Morris) Birchett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jakie Selvester Liebhaber. She is buried in St. John Cemetery.

ALYSSA DAWN MARLOW, daughter of Steven and Karen Marlow of Warm Springs, was born and died Nov. 6, 1999. ROSS NEILL McQUEEN, SR., 80, of Maynard, died Nov. 11, 1999 at his residence. Born Jan 4, 1919, in Little Rock, he was a son of the late Daniel Lee and Nora (Beauchamp) McQueen. He was a veteran of WWII. His wife, Shirley Lee Davis McQueen, also preceded him in death. The body was cremated.

HUGH DENNIS GILBRECH, 87, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 9, 1999. He was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of the late Charles J. and Clara (Noland) Gilbrech. He was a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Brady Gilbrech.

WILMA McCARTY, 92, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 10, 1999. She was born Feb. 24, 1907, in Walnut Ridge, a daughter of the late Stonewall Jackson and Sarah Margaret Mitchell Robinson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl McCarty. She is buried in Strangers Home Cemetery near Alicia.

NADA JANE HOOTON STENBERG died Nov. 3, 1999 in San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Ross and Della Bowers Hooton, and her husband, T/Sgt. E.V. Stenberg. She was born June 27, 1934, in Walnut Ridge and resided in Pocahontas from 1935 to 1944. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

MEN IN SERVICE... Lt. Col. H.V. Logsdon awarded the Bronze Star and Distinguished Service Cross to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Brown of Pocahontas, Rt. 1, for service rendered by their son, Sgt. 1st Class Clarence G. Brown before he was killed in action in Korea last Feb. 1. Buddy Kersey Jr. left Tuesday for his base after a 30-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Kersey and other relatives. Leo B. Rickman of Dalton was recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant at Camp Carson, Colo. Tillman B. Cox, son of Mrs. Thelma Hayes, is now stationed at the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, MD. Pvt. James M. Black Jr. who is stationed at Chanute AFB in Illinois spent the weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dowell Black. Pvt. Daily O. Johnson of Biggers is now receiving 16 weeks of training at Fort Riley, Kan. Serving aboard the rocket ship USS 409 in the Far East is Jimmie T. Mrs. Margaret Mahala William, 88, died at the home of Delmer Eveland at Delaplaine, Nov. 16.

Marshall Ray Holland, 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Holland of Warm Springs, died at Randolph County Hospital Tuesday.

Mrs. Martha Fender, 81, died at her home in Walnut Ridge. She was a pioneer settler of O'Kean. Mrs. Evalyn Sisson of Noland was employed to teach the winter term of school at Hubble Creek.

The Pocahontas Hi football team triumphed over Hoxie Hi on the local gridiron Thursday afternoon 18-0.

John M. Whitrock of Hamil brought two stalks of celery to the Star Herald office, which he raised on his place. Mr. Whitrock has a special method of his own in bleaching the celery.

Mrs. M.J. Collier of Shiloh was in town and brought two very large parsnips which she had raised in her garden.

EVERETT LEE BLANSETT, 64, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 20, 1999, at Northeast Ark. Med. Center, Jonesboro. He was born Sept. 7, 1935, near Pocahontas, a son of Christine Swinney of Pocahontas and the late Dwight Blansett. He is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

SYLVIA CORRINE CLINE, 67, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 18, 1999, at Randolph County Med. Center. She was born Nov. 12, 1932, in Evansville, Ind., a daughter of the late John and Martha Yeager. She is survived by her husband, Morris Cline. McNabb Funeral Home handled funeral arrangements; the body was cremated.

BARBARA ANN TURNER, 46, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 21, 1999, at Randolph Co. Med. Center. She was born Jan. 7, 1953, in Beebe, a daughter of Mildred (Coleman) Armstrong of Beebe and the late Joseph Armstrong. She is also survived by her husband, Merle Turner and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

ESTHER PEARL HAND ROGERS, 90, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 20, 1999, at Pocahontas Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born Nov. 4, 1909, in Oregon Co, MO, a daughter of the late Albert and Stella (Shubert) Hand. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Coda B. Rogers. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

JAMES CURTIS DANIEL, 84, of St. Louis, MO, died Nov. 17, 1999, at Westview Nursing Home in Creve Coeur, MO. He was born Jan. 17, 1915, a son of the late James and Hattie (Johnston) Daniel. His wife, Mary Frances Shaver Daniel, also preceded him in death. He is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

Additionally, Slayton was recognized for the encouragement he gave to his wife, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Blackwell of Rt. 1, in her ACS role.

George Kiefer, aged fisherman, was believed to have drowned in Black River just below the mouth of Mill Creek Thursday night. Mystery veiled his disappearance but evidence favored the drowning theory.

Miss prudence Amos, teacher in Pocahontas High School, was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when she fell through a hole in the dressing room of the gymnasium.

Earl D. Graham Jr. of near Pocahontas was on of the cash prize winners in a cream contest for Blue Valley boys and girls.

The first public use of the new high school auditorium was had Monday night when more than 500 people attended the recital given by Mrs. Daly Thompson and her music, expression and dance pupils.

Mrs. C.E. Crews, whose husband owns the Swan Theater in Pocahontas, died in a Little Rock hospital following an attack of pneumonia.

FANNIE MAE RATLIFF, 97, of Walnut Ridge, died Nov. 28, 1999, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 18, 1901, a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Williams Franklin. She is buried in Townsend Cemetery near Smithville.

VERNON WEISS, a former resident of the Stokes community, died Nov. 27, 1999, in Phoenix, Ariz. He is survived by his wife, Anna.

JOHNNIE W. OGLESBY, 76, of Ewing, VA, died Nov. 11, 1999, at his residence. He was born and raised near Biggers and a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Lita (Hope) Oglesby.

ROY SISCO, 92, of Lafe, died Nov. 26, 1999, at Ark. Methodist Hospital in Paragould. Born Jan. 21, 1907, he was a son of the late Henry and Willie Sisco. His wife, Cora Friar Sisco, preceded him in death. He is buried in Warm Springs Cemetery.

DEATH FROM WRECK IN SNOW... Mrs. Gracie E. Hill of Jacksonville was killed and four other people injured when two vehicles collided in heavy snow on Hwy. 115 Nov. 26. Mrs. Hill's husbanc, 20-year-old Ronald L. Hill, and his year-old daughter, Tanya, and Cleveland Cox of Maynard, a passenger in the second car, were treated at Randolph County Hospital and released. The driver of the second car, John Yates of California, MO., was hospitalized in Memphis. State Trooper Richard Zirkel said it was snowing and that the road was wet and slick when the accident occured.

MEN IN SERVICE... Airman Jimmie L. Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Martin of Rt. 1, Maynard, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force security Policeman course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Airman Martin is a 1975 graduate of Maynard High School.

IN THE LONG AGO, from files of Dec. 6, 1951
Omer Childs, aged 60, and his brother, Lester childs, 50, well-known Pocahontas men disappeared last Thursday evening while on a hunting trip on Black River. A search party organized by Sheriff Rex A. Harper has failed to find either of the men, their boat or motor, although an oil can, a boat seat and parts of their fishing gear have been found.

NEWS OF MEN IN SERVICE... Pfc. Frank C. Jansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jansen of Pocahontas, and who is with the 31st Infantry Regiment in Korea, has recently received a citation for superior service... Pfc. John D. Gunter, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Gunter of Pocahontas, really has a "There I Wuz" story to tell when he gets home. His story could go something like this: "There I wuz. Fifty feet up in the air with nothing between me and the bottom of the cliff but a jeep. What did I do? Why I rode the thing down." He might add that he soon was returned to duty with the 7th Cavalry Regiment because the only injury he received was a sprained ankle.

Mrs. Susie Thompson, aged 56, died at her home on Route One, Pocahontas, Sunday.

John Quincy Adams, aged 60, died in Edmonton, Canada Nov. 14.

Della Mae Henderson, aged 44, well-known colored woman of Pocahontas, died at her home Friday.

Bob Baker, aged 74, died at his farm home near Reyno Dec. 1.

The body of George Kiefer, aged fisherman, who drowned in Black River two weeks ago, was found in the river Monday morning by two of his sons about two miles below where he is believed to have drowned.

Aunt Jennie Coleman died at her home at Bakerden.

Miss Vera Tyer of Water Valley was a guest of Miss Delta Lewallen in Pocahontas.

Mr. and Mrs. Pearlie Bounds of Elm Store were the proud parents of a baby boy.

Mrs. J. Blansett of Water Valley brought a large hen egg to the Star Herald office. The egg weighed a quarter of a pound and was produced by a Rhode Island Hen.

GRACE EISEMANN, 98, of Biggers, died Nov. 23, 1999, in Ark. Methodist Hospital, Paragould. Born Sept. 1, 1901, in Seward, NY, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Ada Dibble. Her husband, Max Eisemann, also preceded her in death. Her body was cremated.

BERNARD (BERNIE) LENTZ, 65, of Cherokee Village, died Dec. 1, 1999, at White River Medical Center in Batesville. He was the son of Benjamin L. Sr. and Mary B. Lentz. He was survived by his wife, Jane Dressendofer Lentz and is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

WILLIE BESS LEATHERS, 78, of Pocahontas, died Dc. 1, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late George Shelton and Birdie Mae (Ballard) Gregory. Her husband, Guy Leathers, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Chesser Cemetery.

WILLIAM RICHARD FOREHAND, 73, of O'Kean, died Dec. 4, 1999, at his home. Born Oct. 17, 1926, he was a son of the late William Allen and Elsa (Young) Forehand. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances (Lane) Forehand, and is buried in Pirtle Cemetery.

DORA K. BOTTS,80, of Mountain Home, died Dec. 2, 1999, at Pine Lane Nursing Home there. She was born Feb. 19, 1919, near Ravenden, the daughter of the late Walter and Jessie Clifton Shelton. She is survived by her husband, William E. Botts, and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Woodstock, Ill.

WILLIAM ROBERT BOLE, 71, of Gatewood, MO, died Nov. 29, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. He was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Hyner, PA. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Bole. Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home of Jonesboro was in charge of funeral arrangements.

MELLVIL LETHA SPENCER, 89, of Search, a former resident of Maynard, died Dec. 3, 1999. She was born Aug. 22, 1910, in Maynard, a daughter of the late Tom and Alice Pullam Mosley. Her husband, Bryant Spencer, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

LOCAL MAN DIES, CHOKED ON PEANUTS... Alfred L. Hufstedler, 33, of Pocahontas, died Friday of strangulation after choking on chocolate-covered peanuts, Coroner Billy Joe Emerson of Craighead County said. Hufstedler's body was found in the cab of his tractor trailer rig on U.S. Highway 63 at Jonesboro. Hufstedler was clutching some peanuts in his hand, Emerson said.

Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gola Jackson of the Maynard Route, was aboard the USS New Jersey which arrived recently at Long Beach, Calif., for a 24-hour stopover en route to the Atlantic Coast via the Panama Canal.--- Captain Mary Baltz, who has been located with the Army Medical Corps in Frankfort, Germany, for almost 4 years, arrived in Pocahontas Monday for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Baltz, and family. Following her visit she will assume further military duties at Hot Springs.

Nathaniel P. Simmons, 73, died at his home in Reyno Dec. 6.

Charles Luther Williams, 68, died at his home near Engleberg Monday.

William Cicero Pyland, 72, died at his home near Noland Sunday.

TAMMY SUE BLACKWELL, 36, of Maynard, died Dec. 13, 1999, at Randolph County Med Center. Born April 19, 1963, in Paragould, she was a daughter of Loren and Sue (Gentry) Sullinger of Maynard. Her maternal grandparents , Oscar and Ora Gentry and her paternal grandfather, Floyd Sullinger, preceded her in death. Her grandmother, Maudie Sullinger of O'Kean, also survives her. She is buried in Maynard Cemetery.

SONNY WHITLATCH, 72, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 13, 1999, at Randolph County Med Center. He was born Jan 2, 1927. His wife, Betty Bennett Whitlatch survives him. He is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

EFFIE MARTIN, 93, of Walnut ridge, formerly of Black Rock, died Dec. 10, 1999 at Lawrence Hall in Walnut Ridge. She was born Feb. 18, 1907, in Caruthersville, MO, and was preceded in death by her husband and a son. She is buried in Oak Forrest Cemetery near Black Rock.

WILLIAM THURLO KILDOW, 62, of Dalton, died Dec. 7, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Med Center, Jonesboro. He was born Feb. 18, 1937, a son of the late William Henry and Alma Lee (Vandergriff) Kildow. He is buried in Wells Cemetery.

JAMES ZEBEDEE TODD, 20, of Maynard, died Nov. 13, 1999, at Saulsbery, Tenn. Born March 15, 1979, in Olive Branch, Miss, he was a son of James David and Millie Jane (Greer) Todd of Maynard. He is buried in Pitman Cemetery.

EDITH REEVES, 89, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 9, 1999, at Randolph County Med Center. She was born Oct. 20, 1910, near Peach Orchard, a daughter of the late Luther and Lucinda (Clayton) Moler. Her husband, Milo Reeves, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Pirtle Cemetery near Peach Orchard.

RICHARD F. (RICKIE) HARRIS, 50, died Dec. 4, 1999, at his home in St. Louis, MO. born March 29, 1949 in Arkansas, he was a son of the late Richard and Norma (Scates) Harris. He was born and reared in Randolph County and is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Pitman.

ARLO W. SHAVER of St. Louis, MO, died Nov. 29, 1999. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shaver. He was a pioneer Church of Christ minister in Randolph County. He is buried in Palestine Cemetery. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife and all his siblings.

DENA GODWIN HALLENSTEIN, 35, of Citronelle, Ala., died Dec. 10, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, Rodney of Alabama; her mother, Mary Agnes Cochran of Walnut Ridge. She is buried in Citronelle Alabama.

MARY (FORTNER) CHARETTE, 67, of Harrison, Mich., died Dec. 5, 1999, at her home. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Nettie) Fortner and a sister, shirley Lakey. She is survived by her husband, Bern Charette, Sr. She is buried in Harrison, Mich.

Nine Randolph County men left Pocahontas Tuesday for Little Rock to undergo their pre-induction examination for the Armed Forces. They are: Cleatus Gennett, Marvin Johnson, Thomas Waddle, Rex Ivy, Charles Perrin, James Goodwin, Eli Murray, Rector Cook and Homer Bates.

Mrs. Henry P. Feiler and Ray Scott Phillips have been named "favorite teachers" at Pocahontas High School.

Listed as a Communist Prisoner of War is Pfc. William A. Allison, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ora Allison of near Dalton. Allison was reported as missing in action in Korea on Feb. 13 and his parents were notified later that he was a prisoner of the Chinese.

Pfc. Mack Archer, Jr., who is stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif, arrived in Pocahontas Friday for a 15-day furlough with his parents.

Mrs. Fanny Poindexter, 78, died at her home on Route One Friday.

Charley F. Helsel, 84, died at his home at Ravenden Springs Saturday.

Mrs. Mary Jane Baldridge Million, 73, died at her home on Route Two Friday.

Lehman Sherman Nipps, 31, former resident of Randolph County, died in Rockford, Ill., Monday.

PRICE HAWKINS, 82, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 20, 1999. He was born Aug. 1, 1917, near Alicia, a son of the late Otto and Pearl Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Hawkins and is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

JAMES THADIS KIRK, 88, of Biggers, died Dec. 17, 1999, at his residence. Born May 23, 1911 in Randolph County, he was a son of the late James Randal and Birdie Ruth (Farrow) Kirk. His wife, Frieda Kirk, also preceded him in death. He is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

MARGARET ELLEN HURT, 87, of Corning, died Dec. 14 at Clay Health Care. She was a daughter of Dallas Niswonger and Lillie Petty. Mrs. Hurt was born Oct. 16, 1912, in Corning and is buried in Black Cemetery, Success.

NORENE SHIRLEY, 88, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 15, 1999, at the Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Oct. 16, 1911 in Tuckerman, a daughter of James Green and Helen Norene (Hixon) Fivecoat. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Shirley, and is buried in Greene County Memorial Gardens.

CLIFTON HARRIS, 104, of Nowata, Okla, died Nov. 12, 1999, at Claremore Veterans Center in Claremore, Okla. Born Jan. 22, 1895, at Albertha, Ark, he was a son of John Mayhew and Isabelle (Collier) Harris. He was reared and received his formal education in the Stokes School. He was a veteran of WWI. He married Lilye Jane Morris at Ingram on Aug. 18, 1922. He is buried in the Harris Cemetery at Stokes.

James William Jolly, 75, died at his home at Supply on Christmas Day.

Miss Lillie Stedman, aged 83, well-known lady of Imboden, died at Randolph County Hospital Monday.

A very important cog in Memphis Air Force Base's highly successful basketball machine is Ray Snodgrass, former Pocahontas High cage star. Memphis Air Force Base has an 11-2, win-loss record for the season plus an undefeated slate and the league lead in the All-Memphis Amateur Basketball loop.

Two new electric stop signs were installed on the square in downtown Pocahontas last week, a safety improvement which has been needed for many years.

WILIFERD EUGENE BRUNNER, 82, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 24, 1999, at his home. He was born Nov. 11, 1917, at Engelberg, a son of the late George and Anna (Hausman) Bruner. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Opal Peters Bruner. He is buried in St. John's Cemetery.

CATHERINE JEAN SHARP, 77, of Jacksonville, died Dec. 26, 1999 at Rebseman Hospital there. She was born Jan. 18, 1922, in South Wilmington, Ill., a daughter of the late Frank and Dalida (Contri) Zinanni. Her husband, Billy Coleman Sharp, also preceded her in death. She is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Pocahontas.

NAOMI LEE HENNINGS, 87, of Maynard, died Dec. 21, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. She was born Feb. 29, 1912, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late James Berry and Mollie (Spencer) Abbott. Her husband, Robert Hennings, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Johnston Cemetery near Reyno.

ANNA BELLE (STUTTLE) PETERS, 89, of El Dorado, formerly of Randolph County, died Dec. 22, 1999, at the Regional Med. Center at South Ark. in El Dorado. She was born April 18, 1910. Her husband, Lambert H. Peters, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery.

DENA MICHELLE TIDWELL, 30, of Delaplaine, died Dec. 27, 1999, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. She was born Feb. 3, 1969, a daughter of Don and Brenda (Wolfe) Yancy of Tucker. She is survived by her husband, Perry W. Tidwell and is buried in Randolph Memorial Gardens.

FLORA ESTELLA HALEY, 95, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 23, 1999, at Randolph Home. She was born Aug. 21, 1904, in Ripley County, MO., a daughter of the late J.R. and Tina (Eagan) Autry. Her husband, Gene Haley, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Johnston Cemetery near Reyno.

LINDSEY BETH MYERS, 19, died Dec. 26, 1999, in an automobile accident. She was born Oct. 3, 1980, in Arkadelphia, a daughter of Kenny and Beverly Cox Myers of Arkadelphia.  She is also survived by her grandparents, Jack and Nonnie Calwell, Howard and Winnie Cox, and the late Wallace Myers of Arkadelphia. WALTER T. WILLIAMS, of Albuquerque, NM, died Dec. 20, 1999. He was born and reared in Pocahontas.

HUBERT "MIKE" MICHAEL OWENS, 57, of Jonesboro, died Dec. 19, 1999, in branson, Mo. A farmer, he was born March 28, 1942, in Lost Cane, Ark. His wife, Patricia Owens, preceded him in death. He is buried in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens there.

LLOYD EARL "TYE" WHEELER, 47, of Black Rock, died Dec. 22, 1999 at his home. He was born June 18, 1952 to Jessie Shives Wheeler and Wilbur Wheeler. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Annetta Jones Wheeler and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Annieville.

Randolph County awakened Dec. 25 to its first white Christmas in many years.  Precipitation began falling late on Christmas Eve, with intermittent snow falling most of the day on Christmas with flurries on Friday. Parts of the county reported as much as 3 inches of snow.

Last rites for Private First Class George Pierce Jr., 22, who was killed in action in Korea last October 10, were held at Mount Pleasant Church near Pitman Tuesday. Pierce was a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Pierce of Rt. 3, Doniphan, MO.

Ray E. Sallee, 66, a prominent businessman of Pocahontas, died at Randolph County Hospital Saturday night.

Pfc. Mack Archer Jr. left Christmas Day to retur to Camp pendleton, Calif., after a visit here with his relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Dunn have enjoyed having their two sons, S-Sgt. James A. Dunn of Carswell Airforce Base, Fort Worth, Texas, and L.E. Dunn, Jr. ofMillington Naval Training Center, Memphis, Tenn., as their guests during the holiday.

Sgt. and Mrs. Carl Akin and daughter of Hot Springs visited in Pocahontas during the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Lemmons. Sgt. Akin is a ptient in the Army-Navy Hospital in Hot Springs.

Mrs. Mary Angeline Blackwell, aged 83, died at the home of E.J. Massey on the Dalton Route Dec. 30.

Boyce Luttrell has been discharged from the Army and has returned home.--- Charles Thoma, who left the States recently for Japan, is now seeing action in Korea. --- Reyno News.

Mary Pratt and Kay Hufstedler have received Gregg Competent Typing Certificates from the Gregg Publishing Company. Mary typed at 69 words per minute with two errors and Kay typed at the rate of 41 words per minute with four errors.
 

IN THE LONG, LONG AGO, from the files of Jan. 5, 1928

Edward Morris Rudolph, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lige Rudolph, died in a St. Louis hospital of tetanus, which developed following an accidental injury by fireworks. 

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Harris of Old Jackson on Dec. 23, a baby boy.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Jones of Lone Oak, a baby girl.
